Captain America. At last. What delicious irony...that you should return here, helpless, to witness my triumph! All you cherished, all you defended is now mine! Yes! America belongs to the Red Skull! What do you say to that?
~ Red Skull meeting Captain America for the first time since World War II.

Johann Shmidt, best known as Red Skull, is the main antagonist of Issues 17-20 in Volume 4 of Captain America, titled "Cap Lives". Likely sharing the same history as his Earth-616 counterpart before Captain America's disappearance, this Red Skull became the undisputed ruler of Earth after winning World War II, and he now seeks to conquer all of time and space.

Biography[]

In 1944, when Captain America disappeared due to being frozen in the Arctic, World War II suddenly turned in Red Skull's favor, driving the invaders from their soil with the assistance of "freak weather conditions" and "miraculous breakthroughs in [the Nazis'] secret weapons projects". At some point, Red Skull lost his left arm and right leg, and had to get cybernetic replacements as a result. In the mere months that followed, the Nazis had successfully conquered England, North Africa, and Soviet Russia before sailing to North America, nuking Detroit with a single V-3 atomic missile to bring the United States to its knees. Once in control, the Reich wiped out all non-Aryan races and other deviants, thus ensuring Red Skull's absolute dominion over mankind, complete with factories and labor camps.

In the present day, 20 years after 1944, the Nazis manage to thaw Captain America out of the ice and then take him to New Berlin (formerly New York City) to meet Red Skull, who recaps his past victory while also offering his old enemy a deal: If Cap publicly pledges allegiance to the Reich, he can have anything he wants, including all of California, as many women as he desires, or even "boys in costumes". If Cap refuses the offer, Red Skull will have him repeatedly raped to breed an army of supermen, after which he'll be experimented on to research the Super Soldier Serum before being publicly hanged in Times Square. Cap refuses the offer but manages to escape, meeting the rebellion soon afterwards. When one of Red Skull's men chases Cap down but fails to capture him, Red Skull orders the man to shoot and kill himself over the radio as punishment.

After capturing a member of the aforementioned rebellion, Peter Parker, Red Skull is about to have him publicly hanged in front of his aunt and uncle, but Cap manages to cut the rope before that happens. While Peter escapes in a getaway car with Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm, Cap is forced to surrender under threat of the Nazis gunning down hundreds of innocent people if he doesn't. Upon recapturing Captain America, Red Skull then reveals that he hid explosives under Peter's shirt, detonating them via remote control and thus killing him along with Ben and Johnny. In the end, Red Skull's ultimate plan is to use a space-time machine to take over the world across the entire timestream, but the rebels manage to break out Cap before that happens. After damaging the mechanism, Cap and Red Skull have one last brawl standing on the machine until both men become sucked in, thus merging their consciousnesses back into their Earth-616 counterparts.
