Red Skull (Spider-Man: The Animated Series)

The Red Skull is a major antagonist in the 1994-98 animated superhero television series Spider-Man and the main antagonist of the X-Men: The Animated Series episode “Old Soldiers”.

He is a Nazi spy master from World War 2 and the archenemy of Captain America. He is also the father of Electro and the step-father of The Chameleon

In Spider-Man:The Animated Series, he was voiced by the late David Warner then by the late Earl Boen, and in X-Men: The Animated Series he was voiced by Cedric Smith.

Biography[]

World War 2[]

At some point, the Red Skull had created a shape-shifting belt device and trained his adopted son, who would become a criminal known as The Chameleon, how to use it.

In 1943 New York City, during World War 2, the Red Skull deceived a 13 year old boy named John Hardesky, also known as "The Cat", into thinking he was hired by the government to spy on Nazis in a top secret facility, as Hardesky was trained as an acrobat and had a photographic memory which allows him to memorize the super solider formula that created Captain America. However, after completing his mission, Hardesky quickly realized the Red Skull and his men were the Nazis, as he wondered why Axis spies would name their agent Captain America, and fled immediately, despite the Red Skull ordering his men to go after the boy. After which the Red Skull became the worst enemy of Captain America, whom he fought numerous times during the war.

At some point in 1944 in Paris, the Red Skull set up a robot project at a Chateau in the mountains with the help of renegade scientist Andre Cocteau, who unknown to Red Skull, was actually a double-agent working for the Allies. The robot project was then destroyed by Captain America, and a Canadian member of the OSS named Logan, who would later become the X-Men member, Wolverine, but the Red Skull and Cocteau managed to escape, which was the part of the plan to make Cocteau's betrayal of the Allies look more believe and allow him to sabotage the Axis behind enemy lines.

Later in the war, the Red Skull continued to fight against Captain America and his team, the American Six. In order to defeat them the Red Skull had created a weapon known as Project: Doomsday in New York City with the unwilling help of Dr. Wolfgang Groitzing, who he planned to kill when decided he had no further use for him. To protect the secrecy of Project: Doomsday, the Red Skull had different teams of scientists work on it and had the supplies smuggled into New York City by u-boat, as well what Project: Doomsday was to only himself. Once the complex for Project: Doomsday, which could be unlocked by six keys that were disguised as small statues resembling ancient gods of war, was complete, the Red Skull was about to have Groitzing killed, but the American Six showed up having learned Project: Doomsday and fought against the Red Skull and his men. As the Red Skull and Captain America fought, the former attempted trap the latter in an energy vortex. Captain America, realizing he could not escape, took the Red Skull with him, leaving both trapped in the vortex. As the two remained trapped, the five remaining members of the American Six divided the statues to keep anyone from using Project: Doomsday while they look for a way free Captain America. Meanwhile, the Red Skull's son Rhienholdt worked together with the Chameleon to someday free his father and active the weapon.

Present Day[]

Fifty years later, Rhienholdt and the Chameleon eventually succeeded at freeing the Red Skull, with the help of the Chameleon's boss, the crime lord The Kingpin, as the former was part of the Kingpin's team the Insidious Six. While they had gathered the six keys to the complex, then had Dr. Groitzing free the Red Skull. Once Red Skull was free, he saw the now elderly five remaining members of the American Six captured, alongside the modern hero Spider-Man, and planned to kill them with giant robots they assume is the doomsday weapon. But Dr. Groitzing quickly frees Captain America, then he and Red Skull briefly fight again. Silver Sable and her Wild Pack arrive and free the remaining heroes while the Kingpin and the remaining members of the Insidious Six free themselves, and all defeat the robots as the Red Skull and Rhienholdt escape to a lower level in the complex with Spider-Man and Silver Sable following.

Once down below, the Red Skull reveals to Spider-Man and Silver the true nature of Project: Doomsday; to transform a person into a solider that can control energy, turning his son into a powerful supervillain he calls Electro. After Electro displays new powers, he grows weak due to his body not yet adjusting, then Red Skull and Chameleon take Electro to a place he can rest and recover. However, after Electro recovers, he betrays his father, something the Red Skull anticipated as he planned to use the vortex as a fail-safe to Electro under his control. After Spider-Man and Captain America repair the vortex, the Red Skull and the Chameleon show up and hold them at gunpoint. After the two turn the tables on them, the Red Skull and Captain America fight until the latter traps them both in the vortex once more. After Spider-Man defeats Electro by tricking him into trapping himself in the vortex, Spider-Man and the other members of the American Six destroy the complex of Project: Doomsday leaving the Red Skull, Captain America, and Electro trapped in the vortex.

Secret Wars[]

However, the Red Skull is freed then from the vortex once again by a being known as the Beyonder, as part of game of Good vs. Evil, and brought to an alien planet, along with Doctor Octopus, Alistair Smythe, The Lizard, and Doctor Doom, where over the course of one year they manage to take over the planet and enslave the inhabits. With Smythe acting as his assistant he shows the Red Skull a new weapon for him called the Cyber Skull, then begins working with Doctor Octopus to defeat Doctor Doom, who has taken over Doc Ock's kingdom, with both secretly planning to betray the other.

After the heroes led by Spider-Man, including Captain America, that were brought to the planet by the Beyonder defeat the army of Cyber Skulls, the Red Skull and Doctor Octopus manage to escape despite Black Cat's attempts to stop them. However, once Doctor Doom learns of the Beyonder and steals his powers, he uses them to return the Red Skull, along with Doctor Octopus and Smythe, back to where they were, then the heroes defeat Doom and the Beyonder erases everyone's memories (except Spider-Man's) of the Secret Wars, once more leaving the Red Skull trapped in the Vortex with Captain America.
