The Third Reich will fail and HYDRA will rise from its ashes!
~ Red Skull's declaration.
You are too late, Captain Carter. I have summoned the champion of H-
~ Red Skull's last words before he was crushed by HYDRA's Champion.

Johann Schmidt, also known as the Red Skull, is the main antagonist of the What If...? episode, "What If... Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?". He is an alternative version of the Red Skull who, instead of using an aircraft carrier to launch bombs against many cities in the US and every major capital in the world, used the Tesseract to summon an Eldritch Abomination he believed to be HYDRA's champion to either dominate or annihilate the entire world. He serves as Captain Carter's archenemy.

He was voiced by Ross Marquand, who also voiced Infinity Ultron.

Personality[]

This Red Skull is no different from his Sacred Timeline counterpart, remaining the usual but otherwise narcissistic and egocentric megalomaniac with capable intellect and a firm believer in becoming the "superior man" he would become. Cruel as usual, he's not above having an old man gunned down and while he's a supporter of the Nazi Party, he makes it clear as glass that it was to benefit himself by obtaining their resources to his end, let alone betray Hitler afterward.

A major flaw that concurs with him would be his arrogance, which he ended up meeting his downfall when boasting to Captain Carter about his plans and leading him to be crushed by HYDRA's champion as a result.

Biography[]

Assumingly, this Red Skull, before his time, studied the mythological legends of the Norse Gods and the Tesseract and eventually joined the SS. Likely to have forced Erskine to complete the serum in order to become a superhuman, it backfired and caused him to mutate in his current appearance, thus being named "Red Skull". Under any belief of the Tesseract's capabilities, Red Skull intends to have an interdimensional being summoned and lead HYDRA into world domination, should it fail, he would resort to annihilating the rest of the world.

In the present, he sends an assassin, Heinz Kruger, to kill Erskine and later shoots Steve Rogers, which prevents him from becoming a super soldier and his future as "Captain America", instead, Peggy Carter takes his place and becomes Captain Carter. Meanwhile, Red Skull traveled to Norway and broke into Odin's Vault to steal the Tesseract, managing to steal the device while his men ended up gunning down the Church Keeper. Unfortunately, Captain Carter would steal back the Tesseract from the hands of Arnim Zola, whom he entrusted for safekeeping, and capture him. At some point, Red Skull's forces would take Bucky Barnes and his troops captive in a HYDRA base, though eventually, they're broken free thanks to Captain Carter and the HYDRA Stomper, Steve Rogers (this universe's "Iron Man").

After many of HYDRA's forces suffered from defeat at the hands of Captain Carter and the HYDRA Stomper, Red Skull would be confronted by an enraged high-ranking officer of the Third Reich, only to proclaim himself a "God" who accepts demands from Hitler and begins explaining his plans for the Tesseract to summon HYDRA's Champion. He shoots the commanding officer before revealing his mutated face in front of him, declaring his intentions to have the Third Reich fall and allow HYDRA to rise. Later on, Red Skull tricked Captain Carter and the Hollowing Commandos into a trap set in a HYDRA train, one full of explosives that caught the HYDRA Stomper in the act and successfully captured him, keeping him hidden inside a vault within Castle de Krake.

During Captain Carter and the Commandos breaking into Castle de Krake, Red Skull begins activating the Tesseract's full potential and has it open up a portal, watching with glee as the "supposed" champion of HYDRA, a tentacle monster, comes out. As Carter and Stark enter, Red Skull begins taunting her as he successfully summons the monster, moments until he is swept away and is ultimately crushed by the creature's tentacles nonetheless.

With the monster running rampant, Captain Carter eventually fought the creature and pushed it back against the portal, at the cost of being separated from Steve and the rest. She makes a sudden return after 70 years under the efforts of Nick Fury and Hawkeye.
