Reede Smith is one of the major antagonists of The Mentalist. He is one of the members of Blake Association, an organization of corrupt law enforcers, created by Red John. He was portrayed by Drew Powell.
Biography[]
Reede's story began when his cousin asked him to help move a couch. Reede injured his back while trying to help. He was forced to take painkillers, but he became addicted to them. Under their influence, Reede entered into a shootout with a criminal, but accidentally killed a 12-year-old girl. Reede could have been fired or even imprisoned, but a member of the Blake Association contacted him and promised that all evidence and witnesses would disappear (which is what happened). So Reede himself became a member of the Blake Association. In the series, he first appears when the FBI begins an investigation against Lorelei Martins. Patrick Jane suspects that there is a Red John mole in the FBI, but Reede denies it. Reede is also present at a court hearing, the purpose of which is to find out who will look after Lorelei Martins better (and Patrick brilliantly wins this hearing). Subsequently, Patrick adds Reede to the list of seven suspects for the role of Red John. Gradually, this list thins out. Partridge is the first to be killed. Later, Patrick leaves a fake list of suspects in his room and it is stolen. The people on the list are tortured and killed. The one who does this is Robert Kirkland (another member of the real list). Robert then approaches Reede and expresses his suspicions about the Blake Association. Reede claims that he knows nothing. Later, Kirkland is arrested and Reede kills him on orders from Red John. Later, Patrick gathers all the remaining suspects at his house and reveals that Red John has a tattoo on his shoulder. He is horrified to discover such a tattoo on the shoulders of Reede, Thomas McAllister and Gale Bertram. Soon, an explosion occurs in the house. Bret Stiles and Ray Haffner are killed. Remains are also found, which are identified as Thomas McAllister. Reede and Bertram escape. The Blake Association declares a hunt for Reede. But he ultimately surrenders to the police. He sincerely confesses to his crimes and Patrick believes him. He also says that he isn't Red John and Patrick easily believes in that as Red John would have never surrendered to the police and even if he had surrendered, he would have confessed in all the crimes he committed (while Patrick directly asked Reede if he killed Partick's family and Reede said no, but did confess in all his own crimes). It is not known what happened to him afterwards. It is assumed that he was imprisoned.
Personality[]
Smith seems like a friendly guy (and there's nothing to suggest he's not). He's very helpful. He once helped his relative move a couch, which is where his problems started. However, despite working with Red John, he's a rival to Teresa Lisbon's crew, not an enemy.
Trivia[]
- He is the only member of Partick's list of Red John's suspects to stay alive.
