“ | Nothing I ever do is good enough for you, is it? But just because your life is crap doesn't give you the right to take it out on me. You beat me... punched down at me my whole damn life. But I stayed. After all you did... I stayed. Not anymore. You know, Hiram has done more with his life than you ever will, and as far as I know, he never laid a hand on his wife... or daughter. | „ |
~ Reggie to Marty Mantle. |
Reginald "Reggie" Mantle is a supporting character and antagonist in the CW series Riverdale. He is a Riverdale Bulldog who is also the ex-captain of this team and the frenemy of Archie Andrews. Sometimes on the side of Archie and his friends, Reggie recurrently adopts antagonistic behavior such as working as a right-hand man for the crime lord Hiram Lodge. At first, he also antagonized Jughead or Veronica a lot. He serves as a supporting antagonist in Season 1, a supporting protagonist in Seasons 2-4, and a major anti-hero in Seasons 5-6.
At the beginning of the series, he was portrayed by Ross Butler who also portrayed Zach Dempsey in 13 Reasons Why before being portrayed by Charles Melton who also briefly portrayed the teenage version of Marty Mantle from Season 2 onward.
Biography[]
In Season 1, Reggie discusses potential suspects regarding Jason Blossom's murder. He automatically targets Jughead and when the latter responds to him, Reggie is about to hit him but Archie intervenes. This causes Reggie to fight Archie. In Season 2, Reggie is shown to be sympathetic and supportive of Archie when his father was shot by the Black Hood. He does, however, keep a petty attitude when he goes to Archie's at night disguised as the aggressor, which annoys his friend. When the Southside Serpents arrive in high school, Reggie and Cheryl directly oppose them. Their relationship is further strained after Reggie battles the thugs with the Red Circle created by Archie. Reggie's hatred of the Serpents caused him to write graffiti and frame the Serpents for it, much to his satisfaction.
When Serpents member Fangs Fogarty is framed for murder, Reggie and the Dark Circle attack Fangs and slash his car tires. Reggie then has a meeting with Hiram Lodge who asks him to kill Fangs, though Reggie fails due to Archie's interference. After the incident, a panicked Reggie calls Hiram for help but the man laughs at what is happening to him, abandoning him.
In Season 4, Reggie is in his senior year of high school and he publicly experiences his father's abuse, causing Archie to want to defend him. This only angers Reggie even more who violently pushes Archie away asking him to leave. On the other hand, Reggie gets into trouble with Mr. Honey, Weatherby's replacement manager who quickly analyzes Reggie's haughty and prankish behavior and deduces it to hide his pain, which turns out to be true.
In Season 5, after graduating at the end of the year, Reggie again works for Hiram Lodge. The two work on Hiram's project to recover the palladium and is hidden somewhere in Riverdale. On the other hand, Reggie argues with his father and finally dares to stand up to him about his abuse. Eventually, Marty learns of his mistake and the two reconcile.
Personality[]
Reggie is the stereotypical arrogant and troublemaking teenage jock. Veronica even calls him a misogynist although he doesn't behave like one throughout the series. Reggie likes to pick on those who are weak and lonely like Jughead whom Reggie mocks by saying he killed Jason Blossom. He also has a fairly violent temper and is easily provoked. This attitude is the result of Reggie's constant abuse by his father, Marty Mantle. Reggie is tired of his relationship with his father to the point that he envies Archie's with his father, Fred Andrews.
