Frankie, the little guy... he wouldn't be fucking the Jew's wife, would he? Because if he is, it's a problem.
~ Gaggi asking Frankie if Nicky is having an affair with Ginger, which foreshadows it's result of the Chicago Outfit's eventual downfall
Look, why take a chance? At least that's the way I feel about it.
~ Gaggi's most famous quote after he and the other bosses are arrested for the skimming operation

Remo Gaggi is the overarching antagonist of the 1995 crime film Casino. He is based on the real life Chicago Outfit headman Joseph Aiuppa.

He was portrayed by the late Pasquale Cajano.

Biography[]

Remo Gaggi was a powerful crime boss and leader of the Chicago Outfit. He sends mobster Ace Rothstein to run the Teamsters-funded Tangiers Casino in Las Vegas, while also ensuring that Philip Green serves as the mob's hotel CEO front man. Sam doubles the casino's profits, which are skimmed by the mafia before taxes are paid. Gaggi then sends Sam's childhood friend Nicky Santoro to protect the skimming operation and eliminate any obstacle against Sam's progress.

He also authorizes Nicky's right-hand enforcer, Frankie Marino, to join Nicky with the addition of making sure that Nicky handles the situation without causing any more trouble. As time goes on, however, Nicky quickly spirals out of control to the point where he ends up getting himself barred from all the casinos in Las Vegas. Gaggi then grows wary with Nicky's subsequent perpetuation of multiple murders and burglaries against his authorization; he later summons Frankie and orders him to tell Nicky to take things "easier" in order to avoid getting the authorities to link his crimes to the Outfit's skimming operation. However, Nicky doesn't listen and continues with his agenda; Sam slowly realizes that Nicky soon intends to overthrow Gaggi and takeover the Outfit. Sam also seems to side with Gaggi's viewpoint on the situation with Nicky, and the two friends end up having a feud ever since Sam requested Nicky to deal with pimp lord Lester Diamond for interfering with his marriage.

In 1980, Sam is forced to have a license hearing for his gaming license but it ends up being denied by the senator despite the promise from the senator for a fair hearing. It is revealed County commissioner Pat Web secretly pulled some strings behind his back in retaliation for firing his brother in-law Don Ward and his refusal to reinstate him at the Tangiers. the result of this causes an enraged Sam calls out the senator and the city government for corruption with the senator denying any connection to Sam. Sam continues to do so while on live television while his lawyers and associates try to get him to leave which brings more attention. Gaggi unappreciative of this publicity, speaks with Andy Stone in the back of his limo and wonders what to do with him. Andy Stone suggests to Gaggi that he could run the casino with a different job title. Gaggi agrees to this but orders Stone to ensure "whatever job he takes make sure it's something quiet." to which Stone complies.

However, Sam ends up doing the complete opposite and he sets up a TV talk show called "Aces High" where he has celebrity guests and he frequently talks about his lawsuit with the gaming board regarding his license including calling out Pat Webb for his involvement in the license hearing. This results in everybody involved in the skimming operation including Gaggi to be upset with Sam for his continued publicity. an irritated Gaggi orders Stone to meet him and "tell him he should quit". During the meeting with Stone however, Sam stubbornly refuses to return home and instead blames Nicky's recklessness for his own problems stating that he was bringing the heat. Andy Stone tells Nicky what Ace said and Nicky arranges a meeting with Sam in the desert where they argue about Sam's TV show, that Sam could of taken another job as Gaggi and Stone suggested and that without Nicky's involvment in protecting Sam, he wouldn't he would not be where he is now. Nicky ends the meeting warning Sam "not to go over his head again"

Later on, Gaggi summons Frankie again to discuss another incident involving Sam and Nicky - this time about Nicky having an affair with Sam's estranged wife Ginger McKenna behind his back. When he asks Frankie whether this is true, Gaggi states that it would mean having to eliminate Nicky and Sam and Ginger if possible. Frankie claims that this isn't the case, and Gaggi accepts this after telling Frankie that he is growing concerned over Nicky's continuing recklessness.

Eventually, the circumstances of Nicky's criminal activities and Sam's progress getting obstructed leads to the FBI tacking the Outfit's skimming operation. Gaggi and his fellow mob bosses are arrested and are to be put on trial, where they would likely receive life imprisoned sentences. Gaggi, anticipating this outcome, resolves to murder anybody linked to the skimming operation who would testify against him and his associates. When Sam survives a car bombing and Nicky is alleged to be responsible for his attempted murder, Gaggi finally decides to have Nicky assassinated; he authorities Frankie and his crew with Nicky to lure their leader and Nicky's brother Dominick Santoro into a trap, where both Nicky and Dominick end up getting brutally executed by Frankie and their crew in a fields.

It is unknown what happened to Gaggi afterwards, other than the Outfit losing their gangland power in Las Vegas. Gaggi likely went to prison for his crimes and also likely died amid his prison sentence.

Trivia[]

  • Based on the character's portrayal of his real-life counterpart, it is likely that Remo Gaggi served a maximum sentence of twenty-eight years imprisonment for his skimming activities.
