~ The Reinassance Men killing Grim and Gnarly |
The Renaissance Men are the overarching antagonists of the Smiling Friends episode "Frowning Friends." They are a group of five enigmatic knights who presumably travel to various locations to perform.
Appearance[]
Each member is a Caucasian male wearing grey, chainmail armor, a red cape, and a white mantle with a red cross. They all ride white horses with saddles.
However, the leader distinguishes himself with a brown beard and mustache, whereas the other members of the group are clean shaven. He also wields a golden goat horn, but the rest of the crew equip themselves with bows and quivers.
Biography[]
Bored in the break room, Charlie mentions to Pim that he is reading an article about the anticipated arrival of a group known as the Renaissance Men. However, when Pim asks for more details, Charlie admits that the article is extremely vague and offers no information beyond their name and arrival. This leads to a brief, mildly awkward conversation between the two, during which Pim questions the point of Charlie reading the indeterminate article aloud.
After the Frowning Friends discover happiness, the Renaissance Men suddenly appear out of nowhere and shoot Grim and Gnarly dead with arrows before quickly leaving the scene. This leads to another argument between Pim and Charlie, with Charlie insisting that all he knew was that the Renaissance Men were simply coming to town. Pim is upset by the lack of information and the fact that the Renaissance Men did not appear to represent the Renaissance era, despite their name suggesting so.
Trivia[]
- According to series creators Michael Cusack and Zach hadel, the Renaissance Men were put in last minute as a way to kill Grim and Gnarly at the end of the episode.
- They were originally supposed to die by a falling satellite, but it would've been too obvious of a Chekhov's Gun to do.
- The Renaissance Men were mentioned again in the description of the Smiling Friends Season 2 Trailer, with the description reading "The Renaissance Men are coming. Smiling Friends S2 double-premiere May 12 @ midnight - next day on Max".
- The Renaissance Men appear to wear clothing worn by the Knights Templar as shown by their cross on their mantles, which were active between 1119-1312.
