~ The guidebook description for the Renegade Army. |
The Renegade Army are an antagonistic faction featured in Red Dead Revolver and supporting enemies.
They are led in field by General Diego and Colonel Daren.
History[]
The Renegade Army was founded either in the 1850's, '60's or 70's by the former Mexican Army General Javier Diego. The army is made of many former soldiers from many countries, including the Frenchman Cleu, Diego's Lieutenant and Colonel Daren, the American who became Diego's right-hand man.
Years before the events of Red Dead Revolver, Diego's men fought against a group of Americans at the Rio Grande border bridge. Diego's army defeated the American soldiers and captured two of them along with a prospector named Governor Griffon, who tried to cross the river during the battle. Daren considered Griffon to be a spy and Diego ordered to execute him, but Griffon managed to buy his greedy life back in exchange for a share of the gold from the Bear Mountains. In order to cement the deal, Diego ordered Daren and a couple of outlaws to the Harlow farm to kill Nate, Griffon's soon-to-be-ex-partner. Daren killed Nate and his Native American wife, but was shot in his arm by Nate's son, Red Harlow.
After taking control over the gold mine, Diego and Griffon became partners. The army also got assistance from the Black Elk Tribe which they paid with the gold and helped them in their holy battle against the Red Wolf Tribe, the same tribe Red's mother belonged to. Coincidence?
After learning of the part the Army played in slaughtering Red's parents via a chatter with sheriff Bartlett, Red started to hunt down the army. He tracked down the army's locations and attacked them. Red was captured by Daren at Sunset Canyon after destroying Diego's coach, and was thrown into the Bear Mountain mine's jail alongside Buffalo Soldier. Red was soon released, along with Buffalo, by his cousin Shadow Wolf and the two cousins attacked Diego's army at Diego's Fort. Although killing most of Diego's men, including the Colonel, Wolf succumbed to his injuries after being attacked by Daren.
Red then chased Diego's armoured train, full of soldiers, weapons, cannons and gold. Red stopped the train after damaging it. He killed the remaining Diego's soldiers, like Cleu and Hernandez, and finally finished off Diego with a clear shot to the head after the cowardly General begged for mercy.
After Diego's death, the army possibly disbands, having lost its bases, its leader and most of its members however, due to the presence of Griffon, some of them might have switched working for him.
Members[]
- Captain Ted Bufias: Bufias was a sadistic Captain working for Diego and Daren in the Bear Mountains mine, being in charge of the mine's entrance. He once killed a man simply for laughing at his smelly boots and pretended his body was a stove and put pans on his head for laughs. He guarded the mine with the medic, Tony, with a Bayonet rifle. He was killed by Red, along with Tony, when Harlow decided to escape from the mines.
- Lieutenant Alonso Cleu: Cleu was a Lieutenant of French descent and one of the more respected of Diego's soldiers, possibly being just below Bufias in terms of leadership. However, he was also a sadist who loved to take items of his fallen victims as trophies, he compared that to a demon stealing a soul. During the mission "The Traitor", him and Juan help Diego blow up the bridge and then bring forth Griff and two American soldiers before Daren and Diego. Alonso is killed by Red Harlow while on horseback during the mission "End of the Line", right before Red takes on the remainder of Diego's soldiers and Diego himself.
- Tony: Little is known of Tony as he doesn't have a journal page. He seems to be the medic of Diego's army and helps Bufias by throwing fire bottles at Red when the latter tried to escape the mines. He uses twin revolvers as his weapons.
- Private Jose "Ripper" Hernandez: Hernandez was a deformed but loyal private in Diego's army who had barely visible pupils and crooked teeth, but he was another sadistic SOB who loved using his razor-toed boots to kick enemies, miners and victims alike. He even once kicked his friend, Pick Axe Miller out of anger when Jose was losing a game of cards. It took a lot of stitches for Miller's wound to heal. Out of all the soldiers, Jose and his "clones" appear the most in the game and he sticks the closest to Diego. During the mission "The Traitor", a lot of his taunts have him praising Diego and calling out to his General for help, assuming he is some sort of a yes-man or a sycophant. He fought for his General to the last breath and was the last soldier killed by Red just before Diego.
- "Pick Axe" Miller: Miller was a tall and robust life-long miner who was hired by Diego to mine gold at the Bear Mountains. He was very attached to his pick-axe, hence his nickname, he even sleeps with it and is known for killing a fellow miner simply for touching it. Miller also seemed to have a role of a bodyguard or a minion for Diego's soldiers as he appears a lot on the battlefields and attacks Red with his pick-axe. He is presumably killed by Harlow at some point in the game.
- Sergio: Sergio, aka The Duelist is a bossy private in charge of Diego's miners and lackeys at the mines according to Sheriff Bartlett. He also seems to be a mercenary working for Mr. Kelley, one of Griff's men, as evidenced from his dialogue. He serves a role as a mini-boss during the mission "Jailbreak" along with Eli and Ennio but is killed by Red before Harlow faces Capt. Bufias.
- Private Eli Hanson - Hanson is another loyal soldier of Diego's who was also tasked with guarding the Bear Mountains' mine and seems to be under Sergio's command. He doesn't complain about his job nor pay, making him a perfect soldier for Diego, according to Bartlett. He is possibly also working for Mr. Kelley and is killed by Red in a duel along with Sergio and Ennio.
- Private Ennio - Ennio is an ugly-looking private in the army whose background is mostly unknown, safe that he takes his orders from Sergio and is possibly also one of Kelley's hired lackies. He is killed during the duel with Red along with Eli and Sergio.
- Franco: Franco is a private who appears to help Diego, along with Hernandez during the mission "The Traitor" where the player plays as the General. Franco may or may not be killed by US soldiers during the mission.
- Juan: Juan is another lieutenant who also serves as one of the two dynamite chargers, along with Alonso, during the mission "The Traitor". When the Rio Grande bridge gets blown up, he and Cleu bring two American soldiers and a young Griff before Diego and Daren.
Allies[]
- Black Elk Tribe: A tribe of greedy Native Americans who help the army guard important locations, like the Hell Pass canyon and the start of Bear Mountains. In return, Diego pays them with the gold from the mine to help them against their rivals, the Red Wolves.
- Governor Griffon: Diego's partner and co-owner of the mine. He uses his political powers in position as a Governor to make sure the US Army leaves Diego alone.
- Mr. Kelley: One of Griffon's top assassins who seems to use Diego's soldiers to do his dirty work for him.
- Cornet Brothers: Griffon's personal agency and bodyguards. Although not directly stated, it is possible due to their influence that they make use of Diego's army as well.
