NOTE: This article is about the painted replica of Renoir. For his real life counterpart, see here. |
“ | You won't yet understand. But this is a kindness, not a cruelty. | „ |
~ Renoir's first spoken words, to Maelle after killing Gustave. |
“ | Remember who your REAL family is. It's not her, it's your sister. Your mother. Me. WE are your family. You would condemn us all to die, for what? Who do you really save with your sacrifice? | „ |
~ Renoir to Verso after being defeated. |
Renoir is a major antagonist in the 2025 French RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. He was the commander of Expedition Zero, who had managed to survive the Gommage by becoming an immortal being through unknown means.
It is later revealed that he is actually a painted human created by the Paintress, in the image of her husband. He has since served as her loyal enforcer, preventing the expeditions from reaching to the Monolith and getting rid of those that threaten to harm his "family".
He is voiced by Féodor Atkine in French and by Andy Serkis in English, who also played Gollum, Mauhúr, Snaga and the Witch-king of Angmar in Peter Jackson's Middle-earth films, Mr. Grin in Stormbreaker, Spike in Flushed Away and King Bohan in Heavenly Sword.
Appearance[]
Like his real-world counterpart, Renoir is an elderly fair-skinned slender man, with graying black hair. hazel eyes, and a short-trimmed beard. He wears a black suit with gold trimmings over a white-collar shirt and black tie underneath an unworn black coat that reaches to the back of his knees.
Personality[]
Renoir is initially presented as a mysterious individual, whose motives are known very little by the Expeditions. Throughout his life, he has shown to be a homicidal individual, killing almost every member in Expedition 33, though he views this as an act of kindness rather than cruelty. This is because he is trying to protect his family, as the Expeditions play a potential role in its destruction.
As he is a painted replica of the original Renoir from the real world, he strongly cares for his family and possesses a strong desire to keep them together. However, unlike his original self, Renoir does not seek to defeat the Paintress but instead protect her from the Expeditions, as not doing so will force her out of the Canvas and allow his real self to destroy it, taking him and his family away with everyone else.
He also carries the guilt and grief that Aline feels over the death of Verso from the real world, causing him to be very protective of the painted Verso, despite being frustrated with his choice of sacrificing their family. Ultimately, Renoir wants him to let go of this path and see that he has a family that genuinely supports him.
Quotes[]
“ | This won't make sense to you now, but we both want what's best for our families. I'm sorry you're caught in the middle. But I did try to warn you. | „ |
~ Renoir apologizing to Maelle about her involvement. |
“ | I'm not here to fight. But my son, do you know what it means to disappear into nothingness? Have you thought through the consequences of your actions? Not just for you, or even me, but for them. Their memories, their dreams, their love for each other? Who really is the one painting death? And who paints life instead? We exist and we will exist for as long as she wants. You want to spoil what we've been given. Sometimes, we paint the bars of our own prison. Your despair blinds you. You think you're ready to pay the price. But are you willing to let THEM pay the price for YOU? May everything be decided before their very eyes. Between the bars of their prison. In the shadow of the Monolith. | „ |
~ Renoir to Verso, asking him about his actions and the consequences that will come with them. |
“ | Why do you refuse to see that I am doing this for us. Yet you insist on rushing toward death. You're trying to stop the wrong cycle. | „ |
“ | If saving you means losing you, then so be it. | „ |
~ Renoir to Verso before their final confrontation. |
“ | Then let us celebrate the second destruction of the Dessendre family. | „ |
~ Renoir plotting to take Expedition 33 down with him. |
“ | At long last, we meet. This is all you have left of your son. Destroying it won't bring your wife back. It will only destroy the last tie you have to each other. | „ |
~ Renoir meeting the Curator. |
“ | I love them too. | „ |
~ Renoir's final words before being destroyed. |
