Rensa is a major antagonist of A Certain Magical Index: New Testament, serving as the secondary antagonist of the Agitate Halation Arc.
She is a cyborg developed by Academy City to match up with the Level 5 Espers in case they were to ever start an uprising. She serves Hisako Yakumi and helps her in her plan to rid the world of "heroes". Rensa contains the hypothalamus of 40 people which control the body. The only two pilots of Rensa shown are #28 and #29.
She is voiced by Yoshino Aoyama.
Appearance[]
Rensa is a cyborg with a female appearance. She has long dark hair and purple eyes. Her skin or exterior has a soft color to it and also has the appearance of a skintight bodysuit which is colored metallic purplish-red and pink. When piloted by #28, Rensa wears a backless pink nurse uniform with a purple cardigan. She also wears her hair up. When piloted by #29, Rensa doesn't wear the nurse uniform and has her hair down, making it look disheveled.
Personality[]
Rensa's personality varies depending on her current "pilot". What is known is that she is extremely loyal to Hisako Yakumi, being willing to even die to protect her.
As Rensa #28, she is very stoic and soft-spoken, always thinking in a rational manner. She has robotic mannerism, including terms like "targets" or "objectives". While she loyal to Hisako, #28 tends to advise her on certain things such as the errors of her plan or rational stylistic choices for her camouflage skin. Despite her emotionless demeanor, #28 isn't incapable of occasionally showing expressions and be quite cruel. She is also capable of striking psychological fear into the her enemy if she needs to. Moreover, #28 tends to give odd nicknames to others instead of calling them by their actual names. She's also interested in unique powers and express disappointment in killing an owner of rare abilities.
As Rensa #29, she is very sadistic, aggressive, violent and merciless, being far more expressive than #28. Unlike #28, she is more reckless and prefers fighting up close using powerful attacks. She is also rather arrogant and has a strange high pitch laugh that can be written down as "Hee hee hee". Due to her previous experiences prior to becoming a pilot of Rensa, #29 is shown to be extremely disillusioned with the concept of "heroes", believing that they are unable to save everyone. In her speech to Touma, she seems to regard him as a complete greenhorn at heroism and unaware of the dark side, claiming that he never been in a situation where he couldn't save everyone before, and noting that he still has all his limbs and organs intact. She also despises utilitarianism and believes that in a situation where there has already been people sacrificed, there is no longer a point in even attempting to save everyone anymore.
Biography[]
The Rensa cyborg was conceived by Hisako Yakumi after she presented a thesis to Academy City's governing board about the hypothetical scenario of the seven Level 5 espers opposing them. She proposed a countermeasure in case that event were to ever become a reality. The Board of Directors deemed the apparent threat and price of implementation of the countermeasure was worth it.
Powers and Abilities[]
Rensa's AIM Receptor
Esper Output Point: Rensa is able to freely act as an output point for esper abilities, allowing her to use the powers of the Level 5s, from the 1st-ranked Level 5 up to the 6th-ranked one. Moreover, she can replicate the powers of any esper within a 200-meter radius from her. It takes her 0.7 seconds to switch between powers as she deploys her folded AIM receptor from her back, changes the power being used and folds it back. The machinery that allows her to switch between powers is described as "knitting needles," which precisely control the values that which allow her to use other esper's powers. By altering the wiring of her body similar to pulling the strings of a puppet, she is able to reproduce the characteristics of multiple people and therefore switch between multiple abilities. However, she cannot use Gunha Sogiita's esper power due to its unexplainable nature and isn't able to copy the Imagine Breaker either.
- Accelerator: Accelerator's esper ability, which allows Rensa to manipulate an object's vectors or even apply some new ones.
- Redirection: Rensa automatically inverts the direction of any incoming harmful vectors, even if she is unaware of their presence.
- Vector Shooting: By touching an object she can immediately change its movements vectors to launch it at high speeds as a projectile. She can do things like launch metal construction pillars, throw metal containers or cars, and kick pebbles at high speeds. Likely through a similar application, she can propel himself forwards at high speeds.
- Aerokinesis: She can manipulate the vectors of the surrounding air and force it to congregate at a single point creating an extremely high-velocity wind. She can use this power to create F7 tornadoes.
- Plasma Storm: She can even create plasma by further compressing the wind at high speeds in a single point, though this takes some time.
- Flight: By controlling the wind around, she creates 4 high-powered tornadoes behind her to fly.
- Body Manipulation: By touching a person, Rensa can take total control of their blood flow. She can use this to reverse their blood flow which would instantly kill them. A similar application is manipulating a person's bioelectricity to achieve similarly lethal results.
- Earth Manipulation: Manipulating the vectors on his feet, she can cause an explosion made of earth and rocks to attack his opponents with a stomp. She can also create gigantic fissures, earth tsunamis and several earth spears to pierce her opponents.
- Rip the skin off of a person: By touching a person's body, she can rip off their skin instantly.
- Kinetic Blast: She takes control of the planet's rotational vectors and transfers an enormous amount of that energy into one attack. This attack uses up so much of the planets rotational energy that it slows down the Earth's rotation by about 5 minutes.
- Dark Wings: When cornered in a fight or under high emotion, Rensa can manifest Accelerator's Dark Wings. In this state, she creates dark wings that seem more like jets than wings as they spray a jet black ink-like substance that seems to swallow the light. Through the input of AIM, she can control vectors that supposedly don't exist as well. The wings themselves are constructed by powers very similar to Telesma, and Index has commented that the wing's power is comparable to that of a saint. The wings are made of a material that is exactly the same as Kakine's Dark Matter. She can manifest up to a 100 meters long wings which can disintegrate matter on contact.
- White Wings: While trying to protect Hisako Yakumi, Rensa managed to manifest Accelerator's White Wings. The wings are likely stronger than the previous dark wings. Her defenses also rise considerably. Accelerator was able to take a large continental attack without his reflection using this power.
- Dark Matter: Teitoku Kakine's esper ability which allows Rensa to create and control an unknown material to attack her enemies. It should be noted that the term "Dark Matter" is not to be confused with the true "Dark Matter" which is among the components of the universe. In addition, 'unknown matter' here does not mean matter that has not been discovered by humans but matter that did not exist until it was created by the user. The material Rensa creates defies the laws of physics as she desires, allowing her to produce 25,000 different types of energy.
- Dark Matter Wings: Rensa can create six white wings made of Dark Matter that allows better control and the ability to fly. She can also use the wings to attack. They can be several tens of meters long.
- Light Diffraction: Through diffraction of sunlight in unseen gaps of her Dark Matter wings, Rensa is able to turn normal harmless sunlight into a deadly laser that could burn someone.
- Wind Currents: Using her 6 wings Rensa can create gusts of wind strong enough to send a tree flying.
- Fragokinesis: Rensa is able to create explosions around her at will.
- Invisible Pressure: Rensa can create pressure through an invisible force that is strong enough to crush a human.
- Regeneration: She can use Dark Matter to quickly heal all injuries.
- Dark Matter Beings: It's likely Rensa can create her own dark matter beings like Kakine.
- Postcognition: She is able to cover some area in dark matter to see the events that occurred there, up to a few months ago. She gets enough information about the events to even recreate the humans there including their thoughts.
- Dark Matter Wings: Rensa can create six white wings made of Dark Matter that allows better control and the ability to fly. She can also use the wings to attack. They can be several tens of meters long.
- Electromaster: Mikoto Misaka's esper ability, which allows Rensa to generate and manipulate electricity and magnetism. Her maximum output is 1 billion volts.
- Railgun: She can fire metal objects at three times the speed of sound using her electricity. Her railgun has a muzzle velocity of 1030 m/s and can be fired at a rate of 8 shots per minute.
- Lightning Spear: Rensa has the ability to generate a "spear of lightning" originating from her forehead.
- Lightning Strike: Rensa can call down true lightning using her ability, regardless of the season. This attack was shown to be powerful enough to cause a city-wide blackout.
- Unique Sensory Perception of Electric-type Espers: Rensa is able to sense electric, magnetic, and electromagnetic phenomena. She is, however, able to follow the electric and magnetic field lines using her eyes. She takes this ability one step further by analyzing the reflections of the electromagnetic waves she generates, giving her no blind spots.
- Telepathic Immunity: She is probably immune the effects of telepathic manipulation due to the electromagnetic barrier created by her AIM dispersion field.
- Meltdowner: Shizuri Mugino's esper ability which allows Rensa to control electrons in that "ambiguous" state of an electron and forcibly stuck them in a third state where it is both particle and wave.
- Meldowner Beams: She can fire beams of destructive electrons which are said to be in a state between particles and weaves. She can shoot 4 laser-like beams or release one concentrated blast.
- Mental Out: Misaki Shokuhou's esper ability which allows Rensa to alter the human mind by manipulating the moisture, blood and cerebrospinal fluid of the brain to produce various phenomena. These applications include telepathy, mind control, reading other people's thoughts and memories, changing a person's personality by means of brainwashing, revelation of feelings, memory erasure, destruction of willpower, creation of illusions, transplantation of emotions, etc.
- Etsu Aihana's Ability: The esper ability of the enigmatic 6th-ranked Level 5 esper which allows Rensa to transform someone into their ideal self.
