Renuald aep Matsen is minor antagonist in The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings only appearing in 3 acts in Iorveth's paths.
He is a Nilfgaardian officer sent with Shilard to the northern kingdoms by the emperor to plot regicides.
Biography[]
Little is known about his past, except that he was a veteran of the Impera Brigade, but resigned from the brigade for unknown reasons. Some time later, Renuald was assigned to Shilard Fitz-Oesterlen's delegation to cause chaos and aggravation in the northern kingdoms to observe Oesterlen's activities. Despite working with Shilard, they have a distrustful relationship because Shilard suspects Renuald is hiding something from him.
After Fitz-Oesterlen's delegation kidnaps Triss into a statuette, she and his accomplice Shilard go to Loc Muinne where the rulers of the northern kingdoms and wizards gather at the summit. After they went to loc Muinne, they met the Nilfgaardian sorceress Assire var Anahid and ordered her to transform Triss Merigold from a statuette into a human form. After Assire restored Triss to her human form, Assire is betrayed and killed by Shilard for discovering Assire was a traitor before leaving Nilfgaard, after which Renuald throws her body into the ditch where Triss is.
When Geralt wants to save his friend Triss from the Nilfgaardians, he encounters Renuald who confronts him to prevent him from entering the camp, so Geralt takes Shilard hostage in order to use him as a human shield against the bullets fired from the Nilfgaardian crossbow to easily enter the camp. When Geralt and his hostage entered the camp where they are face to face with the army led by Renuald aep Matsen, although Geralt has a hostage who is his superior makes him and him not move an inch. Renuald then orders his soldiers to shoot at Geralt but his soldiers hold back for fear that they might kill their ambassador so Renuald without hesitation takes the crossbow and shoots at Geralt but instead hits Shilard causing his death. After Shilard's death, he fights Geralt where he kills him.
