Villain Overview

I am Reptile, and I do not answer to you. Fight!
~ Reptile to Taven in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon's Konquest Mode.
You are not Shao Kahn's true heir! She is a construct. Formed in Shang Tsung's Flesh Pits. I saw this. Your best claim for the throne is moot.
~ Reptile referring to Mileena as not a true daughter of Shao Kahn.

Syzoth, better known as Reptile, is a reptilian warrior from a destroyed realm called Zaterra and an antagonist from the Mortal Kombat series of fighting games (although he instead serves as a supporting protagonist in the New Era timeline established in Mortal Kombat 1).

Reptile is a green garbed, humanoid reptilian creature that embodies the archetype of the unhappy underling. Said to be physically hideous and repulsive, he is renowned for his great stealth and unquestioning loyalty. Unlike many other henchmen, Reptile does not strive for power. He is caught in a delusional state of mind, obsessed with finding the last remaining member(s) of his race, or freeing his homeworld of Zaterra from Outworld's grasp. Thus, he always remains loyal to Emperor Shao Kahn, only obeying other masters to survive and reach his goal of returning Zaterra to its former glory. While well-meaning and sincere, his obsession is so important to him that it causes him temporary fits of insanity.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

The Realm of Zaterra

The destroyed realm of Zaterra.

It is not quite clear how old Reptile is. Estimates run in the tens of thousands of years or even millions. What is known, however, is that the Earthrealm was nearly destroyed by a battle between the gods millions of years ago. Reptile's race of raptors, or Saurians, escaped to another realm, Zaterra, where it was then invaded and annexed by Outworld's emperor, Shao Kahn. As was the usual process for Kahn conquering another world, most of the Zaterrans were killed in the ensuing battles, only leaving a handful of people left. Among those, or among those descended from these survivors, was Reptile. Unlike the others of his kind, who were forced into slavery, Reptile was trained to be a servant of both Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung.

Original Timeline[]

Serving Outworld's empire[]

Reptile was hidden in the original Mortal Kombat and thus holds the distinction of being the very first secret character to appear in a versus fighting game. Before battles with an opponent he would make his appearance and jump in the middle of the screen in a Sub-Zero win pose. Above his head would be clues on how to find him, such as "Look to la luna" ("the moon" in Spanish or Italian and hinting The Pit stage), "Alone is how to find me" (denoting that he is only unlockable in single player mode), "Perfection is the key" (directing towards the double Flawless victory), or "Tip eht fo mottob" ("Bottom of The Pit" spelled backward). Once in a while he will say "I am Reptile, find me!".

Within the story, Reptile, looking somewhat humanoid, faithfully served as Shang Tsung's protector against any assassination attempts. Being a master of stealth, he remained camouflaged and constantly watched over Shang Tsung. After Tsung's defeat in the tournament, as seen in the prequel comics, Reptile reported to Shao Kahn, who took out his anger on Tsung's failure on him, before plans for a second tournament began. Reptile was given missions by Shao Kahn himself, who claimed that he would release the Saurians from slavery if Outworld won. When the younger Sub-Zero attempted to assassinate Shang Tsung, Reptile defended him, but was defeated by Scorpion, who had vowed to protect the younger cyromancer. During Shao Kahn's subsequent invasion of Earthrealm, Reptile and Jade were sent after the treacherous Kitana, but due to Jade's loyalty to her best friend, Reptile was personally ordered to bring in Kitana by any means necessary. During the battle with Kitana, Jade realized his true intentions, and turned on him, with the two of them defeated him, and the invasion would be thwarted as well.

Mortal Kombat 4/Gold[]

As seen in the comic prequel, now looking more reptillian after his master's defeat, Reptile was put on trial by Edenia. Reptile was he was defiant, proud to have served his emperor, and his people by extension. He was exiled by Sindel to the Nethearrealm as punishment. However, this would prove advantageous to him, as he joined with Shinnok's Army of Darkness during his invasion of Edenia, hoping to restore the Saurians. While he fought as a commander during the invasion, Shinnok was defeated, and Reptile fled to Outworld.

Deadly Alliance[]

Returning to Shao Kahn's service, Reptile continued to devolve, unable to look even remotely humanoid, and his intellect was also being affected leading to him becoming more insane. He acted as a bodyguard for Shao Kahn, and was ordered to retrieve Shang Tsung. When he arrived he discovered that the sorcerer had formed an alliance with Quan Chi, and was plotting to kill Shao Kahn. Attempting to warn his master, Reptile was distracted by Nitara, who gave him lost knowledge about his people, such as a Kirehashi blade, and revealed to him the location of Kitana's military encampment. Reptile headed to pass this information to Shao Kahn but found that he had been seemingly killed by the Deadly Alliance.

Left purposeless, Reptile re encountered Nitara, and pledged his allegiance to her. This allowed her to manipulate him into fighting Cyrax, which stranded the cyborg in Outworld. Reptile realized that he was being manipulated by her, and she had prevented him from saving Shao Kahn. Enraged, Reptile tracked the vampire and Cyrax, but was too late to get his revenge. Unfortunately for Reptile, a dragon egg within the chamber hatched, and a blast of energy transformed his body into the host for Onaga the Dragon King, enabling his resurrection. During the events of Deception, Reptile was used as a host until Onaga's defeat, after which his soul was bound to the Netherrealm, and as a consequence, Reptile was freed.

Armageddon[]

His body now more humanoid, Reptile was later seen in Konquest mode alongside the Red Dragon Clan, where he was aiding them in creating human-reptillian hybrids, which would allow him to restore his race. Watching over the experiments, and encountered the demi-god Taven. Attempting to force Caro the dragon to close a portal to the Netherrealm, he fought Taven, but was defeated, allowing him to free the dragon. During the Battle of Armageddon, Reptile fought with the Forces of Darkness for the power of Blaze, where he was seen fighting with Kitana, but was killed along with the combatants.

In his non canon ending, Reptile managed to defeat Blaze, which caused the pyramid to crumble. Reptile found a Zaterran sarcophagus, which contained a female Zaterran, allowing him to mate to restore his race.

New Era[]

Liu Kang's Syzoth initially serves as an unwilling antagonist in Mortal Kombat 1, having been enslaved by Shang Tsung for his shapeshifting abilities. Syzoth was forced to work in the depths of Shang Tsung's laboratory, with the threat of his family's death acting as leverage. After Baraka, Johnny Cage, Kung Lao and Kenshi Takahashi were locked up in the lab after a failed attempt to capture the sorcerer. Syzoth attempted to get them vivisected but was overpowered by them. After discovering his family had been murdered long ago, Syzoth decided to join the heroes.

Apart from the main, heroic version of the character, far more villainous versions of Reptile feature. An evil Reptile from Titan Shang Tsung's New Era serves as a minor antagonist who joined his master in attacking Fire God Liu Kang's Hourglass to destroy his New Era. He and Baraka battled the Fire God and the Titan Kitana, before being defeated. During the Battle of Armageddon, several versions of Reptile feature among the Forces of Darkness, including a female Reptile, who is defeated by the Final Warrior.

Powers and Abilities[]

Reptile is a skilled fighter and his abilities are mainly derived from those of several different reptiles. In his human form, he can remove his mask to reveal his monstrous lizard face, so as fire some of his saliva at his opponent, which is highly corrosive or use his tongue to pull off various parts of his opponent's body, which he then devours. This makes his tongue much stronger than most other beings.

Reptile can also fire energy spheres called force balls, but his most well-known ability is his ability to turn invisible by blending into his surroundings. His claws and fangs have also demonstrated that they are extremely sharp as he is seen using them to tear apart his opponent's face. Furthermore, like most of his fellow kombatants, Reptile is much stronger than even most low-level super-humans as he is strong and nimble enough to put up a decent fighting against Liu Kang.

Powers[]

  • Saurian Physiology: The Saurians are reptilian humanoids who originated in Earthrealm, having evolved from the dinosaurs. Standing on two legs and having bigger brains than their ancestors, they have the potential for more complex thought. Saurians were also called Zaterrans. Reptile has impressive abilities and has been proven to be a difficult opponent to all who approached him.
    • Superhuman Strength: Reptile has impressive strength and is capable of lifting tons of weight. His strength was demonstrated in his fatalities and brutalities like being able to extend his tongue to wrap it around his opponent's head and can rip it off in order to eat it. He can rip someone's upper body away from their torso as well. He can also rip someone's spine out and their heads in half.
    • Superhuman Speed: Since Reptile is very nimble, he can move faster than what others could expect. He can also react to their movements before they move. Similar to Sub-Zero, he can slide extremely fast.
    • Superhuman Agility
    • Superhuman Stamina: Reptile can fight tirelessly for several hours without needing to take a break.
    • Superhuman Durability
    • Superhuman Endurance: Reptile can tolerate a lot of physical pain and can keep on fighting.
    • Superhuman Reflexes: Reptile can anticipate every attack perfectly with his nimble muscles.
    • Regenerative Healing Factor
  • Acid Spit: Reptile's saliva is composed of powerful, corrosive fluids that can easily burn right through steel, much like acid. He also can fire concussive blasts of homing energy.
    • Force Balls
  • Shapeshifting: Reptile can shapeshift from human guises to their real forms. He looked more human in MK1.
  • Invisibility: Reptile's distinguishing trait is his ability to render himself completely invisible.
  • Longevity: Saurians can live for very long lives, and it's not yet revealed how long they can live.

Abilities[]

  • Expert Martial Artist: Since Reptile has lived for over millennia, he had years of experience in martial arts. He may have been defeated by certain warriors from Earthrealm, but he has still been proven a powerful fighter. Reptile can combine his reptilian speed with combat in order to take down opponents.
    • Hung Gar
    • Crab
    • Pao Chui
    • Leopard
  • Master Acrobat: Reptile is a very experienced acrobat, being able to leap great distances and heights. He can also perform flips.
  • Weapon Proficiency: Reptile has some experience with weapons. He can use a Battle Axe and can also use an ancient blade and a lost relic with a connection to the Saurian race called a Kirehashi.
  • High Intelligence: Reptile is one of the few Saurians who is highly intelligent in strategies and learning his opponents every move.
  • Indomitable Will: Reptile has a powerful force of will being able to aid Kotal and D'Vorah in order to depose Mileena for her troubled rule. He also never backs down from a fight.

Quotes[]

Mortal Kombat 4/Mortal Kombat Gold[]

Reptile: Quan Chi. I have served Lord Shinnok well in the destruction of Earth's warriors.
Quan Chi: Yes, we are most appreciative of your effors.
Now I wish to return in time to my homeworld before it was destroyed by the hands of Shao Kahn. As the new Ruler Supreme of all reality, Shinnok alone has the power to grant me this wish.
Quan Chi: You dare make such an impetuous request from your lord and master?
Reptile: It is a simple request for one of such great power.
Quan Chi: It is also not worth his attention...
Reptile: I DEMAND IT! If it were not for warriors such as myself, his attacks against Raiden's forces would have failed!
Quan Chi: Perhaps you can convey your feelings to Shinnok himself.
Reptile: What?
Shinnok: Infidel! You are in no position to demand anything! I could kill you...with a mere thought!
Reptile: But...we had a deal.
Shinnok: A deal? I am not a god of my word, Reptile. All deals are OFF!

Trivia[]

  • Reptile

    Reptile

He was a merge between the original Sub-Zero and Scorpion characters, capable of using both of their moves. Mortal Kombat co-creators John Tobias and Ed Boon admitted in an interview that the "birth" of Reptile was when they took Sub-Zero and Scorpion and fused the two into one and colored him green (yellow + blue = green). They christened this character "Reptile" due to his green color and their reference to lizards. While he wasn't given a lot of character depth at the time, he was worked on before the release of Mortal Kombat II. Reptile returned for the second tournament with his own special moves, available from the outset.
  • Reptile is the first hidden character in the series, and in turn, has the distinction of being the very first secret character in fighting game history.
  • Reptile's concept of a hidden fighter was repeated with Smoke and Jade in Mortal Kombat II and Khameleon in Mortal Kombat Trilogy.
  • In his first two appearances, his blood was shown to be red, but in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3/Trilogy, it was changed to green, which is presumed to be because of his reptilian nature. However in Mortal Kombat 4 and Shaolin Monks he bled red blood. He did have green blood again in Deadly Alliance and Armageddon, but in Deadly Alliance, body stubs broken off were red and in Armageddon, his blood was red if he fell victim to a death trap.
  • Although Reptile is commonly considered an evil character, his goals seem dedicated to the wellbeing of his race. Also as time has gone by, Reptile has come to be considered neutral. The only reason he even counts as a villain is that sympathetic or not, he did perform many heinous acts during his attempts to restore his race.
  • Reptile's appearance in the 1995 Mortal Kombat film was a last minute decision due to test audiences wanting another fight scene. It's also possible that the film's creators added him for fan service and to make the movie faithful to the first game.
  • Dark Reptile's armour in Mortal Kombat 1 resembles his Mortal Kombat X design.
