Experiment 625, or simply 625, also known as Reuben, is a major character in Disney's Lilo & Stitch franchise.
He is the last failed prototype of Stitch. He possesses all of Stitch’s powers and is equipped with advanced lingual skills. The main flaw in his programming is laziness; the most strenuous thing he does is make sandwiches, albeit delicious ones. His one true place is with his best friend, Gantu as his galley officer.
In all of his Western-produced appearances, he was voiced by Rob Paulsen who also played Frenchfry in the same franchise, Broccoli Overlord in The High Fructose Adventures of The Annoying Orange, Motato in VeggieTales in the House, Nicolai Technus in Danny Phantom, Farley the Fox in Charlotte's Web 2: Wilbur's Great Adventure, Chief in Disney's The Fox and the Hound 2, Bird Brain in T.U.F.F Puppy, Snowball in Rick & Morty, and Brick and Boomer in The Powerpuff Girls.
Despite possessing all of Stitch's powers, Reuben is an incredibly lazy coward. However, during the events of Leroy & Stitch, he finally accomplished something significant and used his abilities to help save the entire galaxy. He is genuinely humble, friendly, and sympathetic, though he often makes wisecracks and tends to be quite irritable toward others when they disturb him, especially Gantu. He has accompanied Gantu and Dr. Hämsterviel during many villainous schemes but has expressed indifference about who ultimately wins.
Reuben frequently mocks Gantu's clumsiness and incompetence, yet he can also be very compassionate and considerate toward him, secretly considering him his best friend and companion. He can be seen as somewhat cowardly, particularly when Gantu forces him to confront Stitch on several occasions. Unlike Gantu, however, Reuben is unafraid of Hämsterviel, who apparently rejects him due to his laziness, which is why Gantu has never sent Reuben to him. He also has a rather peculiar love for sandwiches. Most of the time, he is either holding a finished sandwich or preparing one. His sandwiches are reportedly quite delicious, as even Gantu requests some from him.
Throughout the series, it has been revealed that Reuben secretly regards Stitch as his brother, and the feeling is mutual. Additionally, like Stitch, he has a crush on Angel, making him a rival for her affection. Despite his wisecracks and laziness, Reuben also demonstrates a sensitive side, particularly in Leroy & Stitch, when Gantu abandons him and leaves him alone on Earth, which leads him to feel bitter and lonely.
Beyond this, Reuben is exceptionally intelligent and clever, especially regarding the experiments. Although he was the second-to-last experiment created, he possesses extensive knowledge about every experiment, even those developed long before his time, such as Ace, likely due to being Jumba's former assistant. There are also instances where Reuben acts as an "inside man" for Lilo and Stitch, such as advising Lilo on how to defeat Experiment 627, although this was motivated by his desire to be left alone rather than for the sake of the galaxy.
Reuben is also portrayed as curious. In "Babyfier," his inquisitiveness leads him to release Babyfier from his container on Gantu to discover what Gantu's alien species originally looked like, which turned out to resemble his adult form.
Appearance[]
Reuben is a golden yellow (teal blue in the Disney Adventures magazines), chubby koala/marmot-like experiment that resembles Stitch, featuring a large head with short ears that droop at the sides, large black eyes, three small brown-tipped antennae resembling a tuft of fluffy fur, a bright yellow stomach, chest, and areas around his eyes, three dark yellow toes on each foot, a big red nose, four pointed fingers on each hand, short stumpy legs, two brown markings on his back (one shaped like an hourglass and an oblong marking above it), and two flat buck teeth protruding from his mouth and overlapping his bottom lip. He also has brown retractable claws on his fingers. Additionally, he has only three toes on each foot, unlike his immediate predecessor and successor, who both have four toes, although he has been mistakenly depicted with four toes before.
He stands slightly shorter than Stitch (ignoring his three antennae and droopy ears), but the height difference is very subtle, to the point that the animation does not depict this very well. The anime-based video game Stitch Jam arguably presents the best representation of their height difference (as well as that of Angel and Felix); on the character select screen for the game's Free Mode and Challenge Mode, Reuben is slightly shorter than Stitch and Felix (both of whom are the same height), while Angel is shorter than all three of them.
Biography[]
Background[]
Experiment 625 was the 625th genetic experiment created by Jumba with funding from Hämsterviel. It was designed for Stitch purposes, but was considered a failed experiment due to its lazy nature. 625 and the previous 624 experiments were deactivated and smuggled to Earth by Jumba during his mission to intercept Experiment 626.
Stitch! The Movie[]
While Jumba and Pleakley were fighting over the experimental pod container without seeing it, experimental pod 625 slipped away. Captain Gantu later discovered the pod while abducting Jumba and took him back to Hämsterviel's ship for questioning.
When Jumba refused to reveal the location of the other experimental pods, Gantu and Hämsterviel decided to activate Experiment 625 (which Jumba claimed had all the powers of 626) and use it to torture Jumba. However, Gantu and Hämsterviel were amazed to discover 625's cowardly and lazy nature when he was seen making sandwiches instead of tormenting Jumba.
625 would later often try to get new bologna for his sandwiches until he was trapped on Earth after Gantu's ship crashed with Gantu and 625 on board.
Lilo & Stitch: The Series[]
625 is still stuck on Earth along with Gantu and spends most of his time resting, making sandwiches, and mocking Gantu for his frequent failures and follies. He is shown to be quite intelligent and provides Gantu with a lot of information about the experiments. He is depicted as Gantu's wise sidekick and is often paired with him when trying to hunt.
625 once commanded Gantu to battle Stitch, but due to his lazy nature he did not fight and was easily defeated. Ironically, he used his powers twice in the series: when he climbed a ship's window and also kicked Gantu across the beach in "Phoon". Additionally, he is shown to be more tolerant of water than Stitch, such as when he dived into the ocean to get out of the way in "Splodyhead" and when he and Gantu drowned aboard another vessel in "Sinker". In "Mr. Stenchy" 625, Mr. Stenchy was actually jealous of Gantu's affection for the newfound experiment.
Throughout the series, 625 has served as Gantu's reluctant sidekick, though he usually doesn't help him at all, doing nothing, spoiling Gantu's plans, or even helping Lilo and Stitch against Gantu on some occasions. However, he helped Gantu in several episodes.
He was shown to be friendly towards the captured experiments despite technically helping Gantu keep them captive, making him come across as a warden who was not abusive to his prisoners.
Leroy & Stitch[]
With Gantu, he was unable to capture any experiments other than 625 himself, the former leaving 625 on Earth and left to free Hämsterviel from prison. Injured and/or enraged, 625 decided to convert Gantu's abandoned ship into his own sandwich shop.
Sometime later, Lilo visited 625 to use the ship's videophone and even made him a PBJ sandwich as a peace offering. 625 initially refused Lila's request until she realized she never gave him a name (he was 625 until now). After several unsuccessful attempts, 625 finally agreed on the name Reuben. Lilo then convinced Reuben to repair the ship's communication system so she could contact Stitch.
After the call, the two discover that Stitch controlling the B.R.B. he was a con man. Realizing that Stitch was in danger, Lilo asked Reuben for help, but he claimed that it was not their problem. Lilo then enlightens Reuben on how he can do what Stitch can do and convinces him to make something of himself. Although Reuben was hesitant, he complied after Lilo talked him into it. He then repaired the ship, revealing his incredible abilities, and the two flew it to Planet Turo to warn the Grand Councilwoman.
However, when Lilo and Reuben arrived, they found they were too late, as Hämsterviel and his Leroy army had already overthrown the Galactic Alliance. Hämsterviel ordered Gantu to arrest Lilo and Reuben, but Gantu was fired because Leroy was Hämsterviel's new henchman. However, Lilo and Reuben were soon broken by the reformed Gantu after Reuben convinced him to switch sides. Before all three managed to escape, they were caught by a group of Leroy guards. However, they were saved by Stitch, Jumba and the timely arrival of Pleakley and escaped back to Earth in time to save the captured experiments, which were taken to the stadium for destruction.
Reuben participated in the ensuing battle between the experiments and the Leroy clones by attacking Leroy with a sandwich. As the Leroys gain the upper hand in battle, Lilo, Stitch, Reuben (playing the saxophone), and several other experiments perform the song "Aloha ʻOe", which causes the entire Leroy army to be shut down for the safety of the original. .
After the battle, when the Galactic Alliance was restored and Gantu returned to his job as captain, he hired this Reuben as his ship's officer.
Stitch![]
Reuben appears as one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Gantu) of the non-canon anime. In the non-canon anime, it is revealed in the English dub that he and Gantu they got kicked out of the Galactic Armada because of some bad karaoke singing incident. Needing money, they again sought employment in Hämsterviel. Since then, Reuben has been in almost every other episode of the anime with Gantu and Hämsterviel.
In one episode of Season 3 of the anime, Hämsterviel modifies Reuben to use his powers as often as possible, giving him the ability to easily defeat Stitch. This transformation also gave him a "bad boy" personality, and it was because of Angel that he dumped Stitch for Reuben until Stitch saved her from falling to Earth. Reuben was later snapped out of this trance when he saw someone making a sandwich incorrectly. Reuben was last seen in the last episode of the anime when he, Gantu, Hämsterviel and Delia are imprisoned by the Grand Councilwoman.
Reuben also appeared in the specials Stitch and the Planet of Sand and Stitch! Perfect Memory.
Lilo & Stitch (2025)[]
In the live action remake, Reuben makes a brief cameo appearance. Here, Jumba reveals he intends to reprogram Stitch into 627 by removing his capacity to love. While explaining, Reuben's silhouette is shown on the computer screen.
