Reverend William Rose is a minor antagonist from Stephen King's novel Needful Things as well as it's live-action adaption. He's a Reverend of an Orthodox Christian church in Castle Rock with a particular quarrel with Father Brigham. He is one of the many Castle Rock citizens that were manipulated by Leland Gaunt into committing illegal acts.
In the live-action adaption, he is portrayed by Don S. Davis.
Although it isn't indicative of Orthodox Christians, Reverend Rose has an obsessive hatred towards Catholicism. This is demonstrated when he plastered anti-catholic stickers all over town and threatened to have Father Brigham's Catholic church shut down. Although heads of Christian churches are typically expected to demonstrate a higher level of devotion than the common man, Reverend Rose does not demonstrate this, instead falling for the temptations of the story's incarnation of the Devil and committing an act of incrimination in order to obtain what he desired. In the end, he did come to his senses, but not before attempting to kill Father Brigham.
Biography[]
In the film, Reverend Rose was first seen plastering a sticker meant to slander Father Brigham on Brigham's church notice board. He is later seen again with these stickers and signs when entering Leland Gaunt, where he introduces himself and attempts to get Gaunt to let him put one of his signs in his window. After asking Leland about his religious beliefs, Gaunt ended up manipulating Reverend Rose into purchasing a picture of a nude woman. Reverend Rose is seen leaving with the picture folded up in his arms, bumping into Father Brigham as he left.
Reverend Rose is later seen again coming to give a farewell to the recently deceased bodies of Wilma Jerzyck and Nettie Cobb. However, Father Brigham had gotten there already, and so they awkwardly talked over each other.
Reverend Rose is later seen at the end of the film having one final violent confrontation with Brigham. Once the two began their altercation, Father Brigham overpowered him. Just as Brigham was about to kill him, he was stopped by Sheriff Pangborn. Pangborn also got everyone including the Reverend to admit what Gaunt manipulated them into doing, Reverend Rose having incriminated Dan and Pangborn for money laundering. He and Father Brigham seemingly made amends after this. The two are last seen dodging an explosion caused by Dan Keeton.
