What’s going on? Why don’t they like it? We spent $250 million dollars on this!
~ Rex questioning why his rebrand of the Mr. Frog show wasn’t resonating with audiences.
Frog! People don't wanna hear from you anymore. You've shown how toxic you truly are. You're done! You've been replaced! And here's the contract to prove it!
~ Rex having a meltdown during Frog's apology and also his last words.

Rex is the main antagonist of the Smiling Friends episode Mr. Frog. He is the producer of the Mr. Frog Show, and seeks to replace Mr. Frog after a "toxic" outburst.

He is voiced by series' co-creator Michael Cusack, who also voices Grim, James, Mr. Frog, Bosnian Homer, Ketchup, Witch Hand, Plump Demon, Jeremy, and the Skeleton Pirate Captain in the same series.

Appearance[]

Rex appears to be a middle-aged caucasian male with orange hair, a morning shadow, and bags under his eyes. He wears a violet suit & pants, a pink button-up undershirt, and brown shoes.

Personality[]

Rex is obsessed over the survival of the Mr. Frog Show, so much so that he was willing to fire its star, who had brought the show success for an uncountable amount of seasons, all because his behavior outside of the studio brought down the show's ratings. After Mr. Frog's outburst, Rex also became obsessed with the idea of the show's main character showing "toxic" behavior, abusing the show's replacement Glep when he had started to show signs of this. This is in spite of the fact that it was Rex himself who encouraged it in the first place.

Rex demonstrated his arrogant side during the auditions for the new Mr. Frog, insulting many of the potential candidates after he wasn't pleased with their performance (or simply because he didn't like how they looked).

Rex was shown to have a anger issues, even physically hitting poor Glep for talking back to him.

Biography[]

Rex was first introduced during the auditions for the new Mr. Frog. After dismissing many of the potential candidates, Glep was called in, Rex immediately insulting him simply for being "ugly". Glep is unsurprisingly offended and angrily spits on Rex, who weirdly Rex liked it, asking Glep to do it again. Rex then hired Glep to be Mr. Frog's replacement, demanding all the other candidates go home.

Rex was next seen again during a script-reading with Glep and the rest of the shows crew. Glep was getting no reactions, so he spat again, causing everyone to burst out in laughter. After everyone left, Rex held Glep back and told him that he had to stop with the spitting because it was "toxic". Even though Rex himself was encouraging it in the first place.

Rex was next seen directing the Mr. Frog show with Glep as its replacement. When Glep tried his spit routine, Rex violently slapped him with a rolled up magazine and angrily reminded him that he didn't want Glep to spit anymore. Glep proceeded to play out the scene again, but Rex still wasn't happy with it, and so Glep did it a third time but even slower.

Rex was seen at the end of the episode in front of red curtains getting ready to introduce a studio audience to the "new" Mr. Frog Show. After the curtains were drawn and Glep performed his routine, the audience booed, causing Rex to become confused, even though he ruined everything that people would of liked about it.

During their boos, Mr. Frog busted through the doors and apologized in front of everyone. Not buying it, Rex began shouting at Mr. Frog, telling him that he had been replaced. Mr. Frog pauses a moment, then without warning he immediately consumed Rex whole, killing him. This somehow improved his reputation.

Trivia[]

  • Rex is the only Smiling Friends villain to not have any homicidal tendencies.
    • Ironically however, he's arguably one of the most hated characters in the show, most likely because his douchebag behavior is more realistic and down to earth.
  • His name is Latin for "King", most likely a play over how demanding he is as the head of his company.
  • Rex's character as a whole is most likely a jab at studio executives who aggressively insert themselves in the creative process of a show, giving unhelpful, contradictory advice and acting shocked when said advice leads to the show's quality declining.
