Rex Bailey, also known as Marshall P. Pope, is the main antagonist in Season 4 of the mystery comedy-drama television series Only Murders in the Building. He is an opportunistic aspiring writer who murders Sazz Pataki in the Season 3 finale, to cover for stealing her spectacular script, setting the fourth season into motion.

He was portrayed by Jin Ha.

Biography[]

Rex Bailey grew up as a hunter who desired to be writer and prove his dad wrong in claiming that he could not be one. He met Sazz Pataki who gave him a job as a stuntman. After a fire stunt, he did not wait for the fire to be properly put out and approached the director Ron Howard with the script, which resulted in the fire burning Howard's eyebrows off. Rex was fired from the film, but stayed friends with Sazz and they shared their love of script writing. After reading a script Sazz wrote, Rex stole it and took on the alias of Marshall P. Pope to present the script to movie producer Bev Melon, so that she would hire him as a script writer.

Upon learning that Rex stole her script, Sazz was hurt and told him how she would go to New York to reveal his actions. To stop Sazz from ruining his career, Rex murdered her by shooting her with a sniper rifle from an empty apartment. He threw her body down the incinerator and cleaned up her murder scene.

He worked on Bev Melon's film where he met Charles, Oliver, and Mabel. He went to Mabel about on advice on how to make the dialogue in the script more realistic, wanted to capture their characters. When Glen Stubbins, who replaces Rex in the film he was originally going to be the stuntman from recognizes him, Rex plans to kill him. When Glen is injured, Rex goes to his hospital room and smothers him with a pillow.

When meeting with Mabel to get advice from her about the script, Mabel finds out that Rex has Sazz's script and Rex sees a text on her phone from Charles, revealing that Rex is the mystery stuntman that they were investigating. Rex takes Mabel hostage and threatens to kill her if Charles and Oliver to try to save her. This forces Oliver and Charles to enter through the window. Charles is able to disarms Rex, Oliver taking his gun and holding him at gunpoint with it. When questioned by the trio, he reveals his backstory and motivation. He is then able to disarm Oliver and retrieve his gun. Right as he is about to kill the trio, he is shot in the back and killed by Jan Bellows using a sniper rifle, Jan being in the apartment across and having been out for revenge for Sazz's death.

Personality[]

Rex Bailey is a ruthless, deceitful, and violent individual who is determined to do anything that he has to in order to get what he wants. He willingly lies and steals from Sazz, the person who showed him kindness and gave him an opportunity and was willing to kill anyone else he had to to keep himself from being exposed.
