Rey Gutiérrez is the secondary antagonist in the Disney Channel Latin-American original series Soy Luna.

He is the personal secretary of Sharon Benson and would do anything to please his demanding boss. He has a rolodex full of contacts that owe him and isn't afraid to call in a favor.

He is portrayed by Rodrigo Pedreira, who also played Gregorio Casal in Violetta.

Biography[]

Before the Show[]

At some point in his life, Sharon helped him after he had gotten in some unspecified trouble, and later hired him as her personal secretary.

Season 1[]

Rey arrives in Cancún with Sharon Benson and Ámbar Smith while they are being driven to a mansion for a layover. They are all on their phones: Sharon is confirming her arrival, Rey is talking about business while reprimanding a female employee and Ámbar unsuccessfully tries to contact her boyfriend Matteo. Rey then introduces himself to Miguel, the manager of the mansion, as Sharon's personal assistant, only for her to correct Rey that he is her personal secretary. When Sharon wants both Mónica and Miguel to work at her mansion in Buenos Aires, she sends Rey to share the proposal to them. When they are hesistant because of their daughter Luna, Rey tells them to think about it and that if they don't accept, they'll be fired. After some thought, they later accept, even when Sharon offers to double their salaries and afford Luna's tuition at Blake South College, one of the best and most demanding schools in town, where Ámbar is currently studying as well. After so many flight hours, they arrive at the mansion where Rey introduces their housemaid Amanda to the family before everyone goes upstairs to settle in.

Meanwhile, Rey and Sharon find out that her niece, Sol, who was presumed dead, might be still alive, when Luna answers a phone call in which two men named Tino and Cato claim that they want to talk to her. Sharon initially thinks this is a prank, as she believes that her niece was killed during the fire, but she is later forced to accept the truth. After testing them, Sharon and Rey conclude that TIno and Cato stand no threat and hire them as employees of the manor to keep them close. Many years back, a worker of the manor helped little Sol Benson escape the fire. That man was named Roberto and he left the baby girl at an orphanage in Mexico City. She was eventually adopted by Monica and Miguel Valente. They named her Luna because of the pendant she had. Destiny brought Luna/Sol back to her birth home and past without knowing it.

Rey is given the task by Sharon to locate Sol's whereabouts and investigate any possible connections to the Benson Family. However, unbeknownst to either of them, Bernie and Lili turn out to be Luna's biological parents, meaning that their daughter Sol Benson is Luna herself and Sharon is her aunt. Because of this, Rey's investigation takes longer than expected as the season progresses, with no suspicions that they have Sol right in front of their noses. While this happens, Sharon becomes more agitated and demanding, due to her desperation in keeping her fortune safe.

At the end of the season, Rey calls Sharon to tell her that Sol Benson's address matches that of the summer mansion she bought back in Mexico.

Season 2[]

Rey is still investigating Sol's whereabouts and this time he finally suspects Luna to be Sharon's niece. However, Sharon does not believe in said theory and orders Rey to let it go, but he keeps investigating Luna anyway. He takes her and Sharon's DNA for a test. Meanwhile, the mansion's atmosphere grows tense with the arrival of Alfredo, Sharon's father, who alters the normal routine by bringing out memories of the past, which makes both Sharon and Rey uncomfortable and strongly disapprove of his constant closeness to the employees. Rey manages to obtain the results which prove that Luna indeed is Sol Benson and wants to show them to Sharon. She is furious that Rey had defied her orders and quickly considers firing him right on the spot. Rey tells her to do whatever she thinks is right, but she has the right to know the entire truth. Sharon sees the results and finally realizes that Luna is her niece, which causes her to temporarily lose her mind.

After returning to her senses, both Sharon and Rey hatch a plan to prevent Luna from ever finding out the truth: She will have Ámbar pose as Sol Benson in order to keep her fortune safe. Amanda overhears the conversation and they blackmail her into staying quiet. At first, the plan seems to be working as she spreads out the lie to Luna, her parents and the mansion's staff (who believe it to be true) and Luna bonds with Ámbar. For most of the season, Rey does everything to erase any connection related to Luna being Sol Benson: He steals her necklace with the moon and sun, tries to prevent Sylvana, Ámbar's birth mother, from telling her that she is her daughter (which she does) and even bribes the head of Roberto's retirement home and the jeweler who made Luna's necklace into feeding the Valentes false information. However, Sharon's success starts to slowly decrease as she starts receiving letters from an unknown blackmailer in which they pressure her into confessing the deception and Ámbar finds out that she is actually not Sol Benson. Rey is revealed to be the blackmailer, as he has had enough of Sharon's mistreatment towards him. It even becomes futile and useless after Amanda reveals to everyone that Ámbar is not Sol, as the guilt of keeping the secret was eating her alive.

Realizing that her fortune is now compromised, Sharon starts getting rid of every witness and erase the evidence: She fires Tino and Cato (due to them being a major threat in exposing her plans) by arranging a false accident and pinning it on both of them, then sends Mónica and Miguel back to Cancún (and stop them from seeking the truth) before ultimately having her father (who had figured out Luna's true identity) institutionalized and locked up at a mental hospital. She eventually deduces that Rey is the blackmailer after noticing in one of the blackmailing letters the capital A of Ámbar's name without its accent, a mistake that Rey usually makes and something that indirectly blows his cover. For this, Sharon fires Rey. In response (and to no avail), Rey admits that he was in love with her, but she neither appreciated his loyalty, dedication and hard work nor thanked him for all of the things he did for her. With most of the mansion's staff eliminated one by one, only Amanda is left and Sharon strangely acts nicer to her, before warning her not to trust or believe anything Rey tells her. Rey also tells Amanda the same about Sharon, but she remains undecided on whether who to trust: Rey or Sharon.

A seemingly remorseful Rey later releases Alfredo from the mental asylum, apologizing for everything that happened and tells him how much he admired Sharon who never valued any of his hard work and provides him with the evidence that proves Luna is the rightful heir of the Benson fortune before going their separate ways. Sharon would later try to forcefully stop her father from getting to Luna, to no avail, as Luna's necklace reaches her hands and she finally realizes that she is Sol Benson, reuniting with her grandfather and forcing Sharon to accept defeat and flee the country.

Season 3[]

Rey returns to the Benson Mansion where he apologizes to Alfredo, Miguel and Mónica for everything he did to them and asks for another chance. Miguel and Mónica are initially skeptical, but Alfredo is sure that Rey has truly changed because if it wasn't for him, Luna wouldn't have known about her true identity. After some thought, Rey is allowed back into the mansion as an employee and Luna is also fine with him returning. However, he is met with a less than warm welcome from Ámbar, now more malicious than ever before, and criticizes him for betraying Sharon, but Luna defends him. At first, everything seems to be going well until Rey finds himself at crossroads when he unexpectedly runs into Sharon, who wants him to help her in her revenge plan against the Valentes and her father for stealing "her" fortune. Rey begrudgingly agrees to help her, although only on the condition that they are equal partners.

Unknown to Rey, Sharon hires her old friend Maggie as a spy to be her eyes and ears inside the mansion by posing as a housemaid. Unaware of this, Rey is constantly annoyed by her talkative, meddling attitude and constant flirting towards him and only treats her like nothing more than an employee, still behaving like when he used to work for Sharon, with everyone implying that Rey is being hard on her. Rey eventually finds out that Maggie is, in fact, Sharon's spy, and confronts Sharon for not telling him about this. Nevertheless, Sharon manages to convince Rey that they work together to enact the plan. So far, everyone thinks that Rey is now on their side, save for Ámbar, who suspects that Rey is still contacting Sharon and believes he is hiding something. However, every time she tries to expose him (without proof) and someone comes in, Rey manages to improvise and change the subject so that his ruse won't be exposed. When he and Maggie try to steal one of the paintings (on Sharon's orders), they are almost caught by Luna an Nina, so, not knowing how to react, Maggie kisses Rey, much to the amusement of both girls. To avoid any suspicion on them, Rey and Maggie pretend to be a couple, even if Rey is not genuinely interested in her. As a result, they manage to steal all of the paintings and replace them with fake ones (while they are accidentally recorded with Jazmín's tablet, which she left behind at the mansion) that are sold at an auction, which causes law troubles for Luna's parents and Alfredo: They receive a court order in which the buyers accuse them for falsifying the paintings and Sharon anonymously reports them to the police by falsely claiming that they are trying to leave the city, resulting in their arrest and later immediate release, although the investigation is still pending. Ana, Nina's mother who is a lawyer, offers to help them clean their names and find the culprit.

Rey and Maggie keep working for Sharon to try and frame the Valentes for theft and they have meetings with Sharon so that she finds out what is happening in the mansion. Alfredo, Miguel and Mónica find out that Sharon is using another identity, that of Victoria Sureda with a black short wig, but Rey covers for her and she changes her identity to Vanessa Fürst, this time using a red long-haired wig. Sharon tries to enter, but is almost caught by Luna who, mistaking her for another person, asks her who she is, but Sharon instead ignores her and runs off. During nightfall, Sharon is seen peeking through one of the windows of the mansion, just as Pedro opens it and gets frightened at the sight of her, with Matteo, Simón and Michel as witnesses. However, just as Miguel checks on the window, Sharon has already fled the scene. Another night, Sharon sees Luna about to open a chest that contains something "mysterious". When she demands that the key be given to her, Luna instead throws it and falls into the garden. Luna chases after Sharon but she escapes.

Maggie finds the key and keeps it for herself instead of telling Rey or Sharon. She uses it to blackmail Sharon into paying her more than she wants. Sharon blames Rey for Luna discovering her while pressuring Rey into finding the key. He then finds out Maggie has the key and steals it from her purse, but when Sharon uses it and does not open the chest, Maggie reveals to Rey that she predicted he would steal the key back from her and she had replaced it for a fake one. Maggie is jealous of Sharon and suspects that she is seducing Rey to control him. While Rey, now fully corrupted by Sharon, is still determined to go through with the plan, Maggie starts to feel bad for the Valentes that, in some ocassions, tries to tell them the truth but she chickens out. Rey is finally exposed when Ámbar and Luna find him in the mansion's warehouse with the real paintings but he escapes the mansion while nervously trying to explain himself. He later meets Sharon, who calls him out for his incompetence and calls him a loser. Rey realizes that Sharon was only using him and sarcastically remarks that he is sorry for her.

Miguel and Alfredo finally catch up to Rey who, now really repented, agrees to cooperate along with Maggie with the Valentes to arrest Sharon. Rey turns himself in to the police and confesses to his crimes. He also starts to develop feelings for Maggie and they start a real relationship. While Mónica, Miguel, Alfredo and Ana are away, Sharon enters the mansion again and tries repeatedly to pry open the chest (after Maggie accidentally lost the key) but fails. As a last act of revenge, she uses a lighter to destroy the chest, saying that if she doesn't open it no one will, but ends up causing a fire at the mansion. Rey and Maggie immediately smell the smoke and realize that the mansion is on fire. Rey goes to look for Alfredo, thinking that he stayed behind to rest, and tells Maggie to call the fire brigade. Rey finds Sharon and desperately tells her they have to go because it's dangerous, but she refuses to leave until the chest is fully destroyed. Rey tries to leave, but the smoke debris make him fall to the ground. He vainly tries to reach the doorknob but Rey is weakened that he loses conciousness until he is rescued by the firefighters along with Luna and Ámbar before alerting everyone that Sharon is still inside the burning mansion just as Ámbar and Alfredo desperately fear for her life and the camera zooms out of the mansion. A month later, it is revealed that Rey and Maggie's sentence for helping Sharon in her plans has been reduced to community service. Maggie says that at least they didn't end up in prison and that they can now be together and this is the last time they are ever seen, meaning that they were unable to attend Luna's 18th birthday party when Alfredo implies that their absence is felt.

Personality[]

Rey is a loyal and hardworking man. He often acts mean and overly serious. Rey can also be a big blackmailer, and an overall miserable person. Despite Rey's steadfast loyalty, he can tell when he or someone else is crossing the line. When Ámbar Smith's actions are obviously harming someone to the extreme, Rey will step in and notify Sharon.
