The Ribs Woman is one of the two main antagonists of the Junji Ito short story Ribs Woman.
Biography[]
The Ribs Woman is an unnamed woman who, desiring to become beautiful, approached Doctor Kitamura, a plastic surgeon, and requested that he remove her ribs to gain a more attractive figure. However, the doctor removed all of her ribs, though the mysterious woman survived this procedure, and from that point on, with Kitamura under her control, began having young women murdered so she could steal their bones to play as harps, creating an unnerving melody with them even though there was seemingly no way the instruments could resonate.
Eventually, the Ribs Woman had Kitamura replace her missing ribs with that of Ruriko Shimada, the friend of the story's main protagonist Yuki. However, the man botched this job too, and the bones poked out of her skin, the wounds subsequently becoming infected. After accosting Yuki, who had recently underwent the rib-removal procedure herself, the Ribs Woman revealed how her harps could play sound; after having her ribs removed in the past, Kitamura hastily bonded her chest together with a mess of metal wires, which resonate when she played her harp and were capable of causing pain to those able to hear her playing.
Kitamura suddenly appeared, and the Ribs Woman ordered him to kill Yuki and remove her ribs. She then grabbed hold of a garden fork and attempted to kill Yuki herself, but Yuki's boyfriend Keisuke arrived, grabbing the fork and stopping Kitamura from attacking Yuki. However, the two were unable to stop the Ribs Woman from escaping, and to this day, the eerie sounds of her harp can still be heard.
