~ Richard Brave to Stiyl Magnus. |
Richard Brave is a minor antagonist in the A Certain Magical Index franchise, serving the main antagonist of Stiyl Magnus SS.
A former member of Necessarius who defected and vowed revenge against them for denouncing his invention, Lævateinn, and branding him as a heretic. He attempts to capture Patricia Birdway to use her in a plot to acquire the Rune Epitaph and use its power against the Angelican Church. He's the archenemy of Stiyl Magnus.
Appearance[]
Richard apparently appears as a tall man around the age of twenty. He wears a black coat.
Personality[]
Richard Brave is a selfish, ruthless and twisted man who only seeks to further his goals and shows little concern for those affected by his actions. He dedicated his life to creating the weapon Lævateinn, to the point where he was willing to apply scientific methods. However, after it was deemed illegal by Necessarius, Richard developed an immense grudge towards the Angelican Church, becoming obesssed with taking revenge on them for denouncing his work.
He is also manipulative and cunning, as he orchestrated the events involving Necessarius chasing after Patricia Birdway, an innocent girl, by convincing them she was a "traitor" to the church. Richard shows no regard for the lives of others and is willing to endanger innocents for the sake of his goals. He is also very sadistic and cruel, as shown when tried to trick Patricia into touching the Rune Epitaph, which would have blown her arm off, for no reason other than his own amusement.
Biography[]
Originally, his primary area of activity was North America, where he specialized in defensive ocean battles and helped set a defensive line to prevent American magic cabals from attacking England. However, some time ago his signature spell, Lævateinn, was deemed by Necessarius as illegal, as its nature was not considered completely magical and thus went against the Magic-Science treaty.
As it was his greatest acheivement that he had created after countless research, experiments, working for countless hours, and fine-tuning it several times, it had become the symbol of his life. He also deemed it worthy dedicating his life to, as the weapon that prevented many tragedies. To him, he had nothing else. After this incident, Richard's hatred for the Anglican Church grew and sparked his desire to annihilate the church.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Lævateinn: Richard's main spell which takes the form of a sword with the runes sowulo, gebo, kenaz, ansuz, laguz, and uruz carved onto the blade. Lævateinn is a flaming blade that creates a powerful blaze that seemingly burns so hot it can effortlessly annihilate anything, even a lake or concrete. It can also be used to create a massive whirl of sparks that are blown by wind towards the enemy, creating something similar to a random carpet bombing. The sparks open up holes the ground like in a sponge, and the flames spread from those holes. However, in reality, Lævateinn's flames are about average in power. He secretly sprays invisible ink (Vitamin B2 to be precise) on his targets in the shape of runes that when activated by ultraviolet light cause them to become extremely flammable.
- Mind Interference Spell: Richard is able to use a spell to cause mental interference on his enemies. First, the enemy will glimpse a black figure at the edge of their vision. Then they'll hear an unnatural voice calling out to them, coming from a constant but undetermined distance even if they are running as fast as they can. If they try to turn around to focus on the figure all strength will leave their body and they will collapse, with a sound similar to glass shattering coming from their chest. The spell works by forcibly holding in place a portion of the enemy's mind which prevents the whole thing from moving. If you think of the human mind as being made up of many gears, the spell forces a wedge between two of the gears to stop them all from moving. Removing that "wedge" with magic will allow the victim of the spell to regain consciousness and move again. It's later revealed that the black figure is likely not the true source of the spell, and is merely a distraction intended to allow Richard to cast the spell.
