I... we... share the same history. You and I are history. I recall... I recall the day of my birth. 18th of September, 1964, 3.46993412 recurring minutes past nine.
~ Doc Eminiss

Richard Eminiss is a minor antagonist in Penumbra: Black Plague and Penumbra: Requiem.

History[]

Eminiss was originally a genius scientist with a questionable amount of sanity who encountered the player, Philip, in the computer room. However just a few minutes of conversation led to Richard being possessed and infected by the Tuurngait virus, making him become a mindless hostile humanoid. Philip must escape the evil entity by sprinting and hiding before thwarting his plans of killing him by tricking the now-hostile Eminiss into a room and trapping him in there.

Personality[]

When Philip first encounters Eminiss, the latter speaks in a soft and respectful tone of voice, and is even openly offering the detachment of his own hand so that Philip could use it (as a hand scan was needed to open a door to make progress in the game). However, in the middle of his sentences, he will randomly spout overly-specific details, including the exact date and time of his birth. When Philip spoke to Amabel Swanson beforehand, Amabel stated that Eminiss was acting strangely. This means that it is highly likely that the Tuurngait virus infecting Eminiss was responsible for his calm yet erratic personality, or at least just the erratic part of it.

In Penumbra: Requiem, Eminiss mentions that he and the Tuurngait communicated "on a different plane", which may mean that he and the Tuurngait were on friendly terms somehow. Given the nature of the game, this may have been nonsense, as this game takes place in Philip's mind, which is mixed with the memories of different people who also suffered from the Tuurngait infection.

Trivia[]

  • Eminiss is voiced by Sam A. Mowry, who later went on to voice Alexander from Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
