King Richard III is the overarching protagonist the 1983 British sitcom The Blackadder, based on the English monarch of the same name. His first and only appearance was in the very first episode, "The Foretelling".
He was portrayed by the late Peter Cook.
Biography[]
The opening narration explains that the characterization of Richard III as a bloodthirsty tyrant was nothing but demonizing fiction created by Richard's nemesis, Henry Tudor, and that Richard did not murder his nephews, one of whom grew up to be King Richard IV.
On August 21, 1485 King Richard stood up and made a speech stating that he hopes his opponents will go to hell and everyone cheers. He then sees and is introduced to Edmund Blackadder and calls him a "little turd".
The next day, Richard makes a speech before the Battle of Bosworth Field. later he is told by his Nephew that he lost his horse so then he goes looking for a horse and finds Edmund's Horse and tries to take it only for Edmund to come and decapitate him. Edmund not realizing what he has done picks up his head and is horrified to see he has killed his great-uncle.
Edmund and Baldrick then drag his body to a cottage after seeing they forgot to bring his head, Percy turns up holding his head.
Later he comes back as a ghost to visit Edmund while in his room and insults and torments him for killing him. and shows his head float separately from his body. He then walks away as Edmunds mother knocks on the door.
He later shows up at a banquet and tries to talk to the other people but is un aware that Edmund is the only one who can see him much to his frustration then he disappears. Edmund runs back to his room and Richard torments him as he looks for Henry Tudor. Richard's Ghost is never seen again.
Personality[]
He seems very passive aggressive and expresses his verbal disdain for Edmund Blackadder all while keeping a smile on his face. But according to the narrator, he was a "kind and thoughtful man" when it came to his nephews.
Trivia[]
- King Richard III is one of only two real kings to appear in the main Blackadder series; the other one is George III.
