NOTE:This article uses information derived from Richard Lockwood on The Vampire Diaries Wiki.

For one hundred and fifty years, Mystic Falls has been the kind of town that everybody wants to call home, safe, prospers, welcoming.
~ Richard Lockwood

Richard Lockwood is the secondary antagonist of The Vampire Diaries.

He is the mayor of Mystic Falls and a member of the Town Council whose mission is to eradicate all vampires from Mystic Falls with the hunter John Gilbert.

He was portrayed by Rob Pralgo.

Biography[]

Season 1[]

Richard was the mayor of the town of Mystic Falls, known for his aggressive and authoritarian character. His relationship with his son Tyler was strained, and she became angry with him for not winning a fight against Matt Donovan. In addition, Richard experienced an attraction to Pearl, the leader of the vampires.

Later, John Gilbert managed to talk Richard out of using a sonic device that would cognitively affect vampires. Due to his werewolf gene, Richard was also affected by the device, leading him to be mistaken for a vampire. He was taken to the church, where he was eventually killed by one of the vampires there.

Personality[]

Richard was known to have an explosive temper, possibly due to his werewolf heritage. Despite this, he also had a deep love for the city and was dedicated to organizing festivities and events to raise funds for charity. However, his deep hatred of vampires, possibly due to his werewolf heritage, led him to form an alliance with the City Council with the goal of destroying anyone who came to the city.

Richard did not hesitate to go to extremes to get what he wanted, even defying Sheriff Forbes and using the Gilbert Device on Founder's Day. He displayed his violence and intimidating attitude by trying to force Tyler and Jeremy to fight, instead of seeking a peaceful solution. These aggressive behaviors were possibly influenced by the influence of the full moon.

Although Richard seemed nice and friendly to others, he was actually selfish. His main focus was not the well-being of people, as shown when Mr. Tanner's death concerned him more with his impact on the football team and finding a replacement. Furthermore, he was extremely arrogant and enjoyed control. During the night that the vampires were being assembled, he was willing to endanger innocent people for the sake of his own goals.

Richard collaborated with John Gilbert in his plan to capture and kill the tomb vampires. However, his plan backfired when the device that neutralized vampires also affected him due to his werewolf gene. The agents mistakenly believed that Richard was a vampire and locked him in the basement, where he was killed by one of the tomb vampires.

Despite his controversial actions and his temper issues, Richard left a legacy of complexity and conflict in Mystic Falls, reminding us of the importance of understanding and peaceful resolution of conflicts rather than resorting to violence.

Appareance[]

Richard was a man of slight build and tall stature, which gave him an imposing presence. He used to wear dark colored suits, which reflected his serious and enigmatic personality. He had dark brown hair that fell gracefully and brown eyes that conveyed determination and depth. These physical features gave him a distinctive appearance and framed his intriguing character.

Relationships[]

  • Tyler Lockwood (Son)
  • Carol Lockwood (Wife)
  • Mason Lockwood (Brother)
  • Town Council (Allies)

Trivia[]

  • Like Mikael and Klaus, Richard had a poor relationship with Tyler.
  • In Family Ties, when Carol Lockwood talks to him, she calls him Charles. This may be his middle name.
  • With the Other Side's collapse and the destruction of Hell, he either found peace or went to a dimension similar to Hell, if one exists.
