General Richard Bill Flag Sr., better known simply as Rick Flag Sr., is one of the two main protagonists (alongside the Bride of Frankenstein) of the 2024 adult animated series Creature Commandos, a supporting character in the 2025 film Superman, and the main antagonist of the second season of the HBO Max series Peacemaker, all installments in the DC Universe.
He is a highly experienced and decorated general in the United States Armed Forces, as well as an operative of A.R.G.U.S. He is the father of the late Colonel Rick Flag Jr. and the former leader of the Creature Commandos, who were deployed to Pokolistan to protect Princess Ilana Rostovic from the sorceress Circe.
After uncovering Ilana's secret plot to take over the world, Flag was critically injured, leading to the Bride assuming command of the team. Following his recovery, he met with the U.S. Department of Defense during Lex Luthor's campaign against Superman. Some point afterward, Flag became the director of A.R.G.U.S. and focused his attention on trying to capture Peacemaker for his son's murder.
He is portrayed by Frank Grillo, who also played Crossbones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Big Daddy in Wolf Warrior 2, Bill Bevilaqua in Tulsa King, and Terry Malone in Black and Blue.
Personality[]
Rick Flag Sr. is a skilled and charismatic leader who excels at teamwork and keeping his allies united under pressure. He’s confident, persuasive, and dependable—qualities that make him one of Amanda Waller’s most trusted operatives. A clear example of his diplomacy is when he calmly convinces Dr. Phosphorus to abandon a plan to steal a shock device and cooperate with the team.
Though disciplined and authoritative, Flag is also vain and very conscious of his appearance. Beneath his stern exterior, he has a soft spot for beautiful women, a weakness that leaves him vulnerable to seduction. When he first meets Ilana, he’s attracted to her but tries to maintain professionalism. However, he ultimately gives in to her advances and sleeps with her.
Flag also carries deep emotional scars from the death of his son, Rick Flag Jr., who was inspired by his father to serve his country. Though he hides his pain, the loss and his resentment toward Peacemaker—his son’s killer—still haunt him.
Despite his experience, Flag isn't numb to the horrors he encounters. He’s visibly disturbed by extreme violence, such as the brutal attack on Circe by Weasel and Dr. Phosphorus. He also shows empathy for his team, like when he gently comforts Nina after the destruction of G.I. Robot, acknowledging their bond.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Not much is known of Richard Bill "Rick" Flag's past, but he fell in love with a woman and she gave birth to his son when they were eighteen years old. Needing to provide for her and his son, Flag, Sr. joined the military mostly to receive money to raise and support his family. Rick Flag, Jr. in turn joined the military once he was eighteen, but was tragically killed by Peacemaker during a mission in Corto Maltese. Flag, Jr.'s death deeply affected his father, who holds a hatred towards Peacemaker and fell into a state of depression.
Creature Commandos (Season One)[]
Two years later, General Rick Flag Sr. and A.R.G.U.S. Director Amanda Waller watched a GBS News report about a crisis in Pokolistan. Circe, claiming to be the rightful heir to Themyscira, was attempting to overthrow the Pokolistani royal family. Flag was frustrated by the Sons of Themyscira's actions, while Waller reminded him of the strategic importance of Pokolistan due to its oil alliance with the U.S. She also revealed that Princess Ilana Rostovic was already in talks with the U.S. government.
As they entered an elevator in Belle Reve, Flag questioned the status of Task Force X, thinking Congress had shut it down. Waller explained that the shutdown only applied to human operatives. When they arrived at a high-security level, Flag was shocked to discover non-human prisoners—part of a secret division exempt from congressional restrictions. Waller introduced Flag to the new team—Task Force M, or the Creature Commandos—including the Bride, Doctor Phosphorus, Weasel, G.I. Robot, and Nina Mazursky. She explained each member’s background, apologizing when the mention of Weasel brought up memories of Flag’s late son, who died during the Corto Maltese mission.
As they entered the holding area, some team members tried to attack, but Waller stopped them using a Nano-Bomb detonator. She handed the device to Flag, appointing him team leader, and told him an Osprey was waiting to take him to protect Rostovic from Circe. Onboard the aircraft Sheba 2, Flag tied up Weasel to prevent any trouble. He addressed the team with understanding, knowing they had little choice in the mission. Doctor Phosphorus responded with sarcasm, and G.I. Robot mistook Weasel for a Nazi until Flag clarified otherwise. Phosphorus noted that Weasel had once killed children, which made everyone uneasy.
Upon landing, the team was escorted by armored tanks to the castle. Weasel misbehaved again, causing trouble in the transport. Inside the castle, Flag admired its grandeur and was introduced to Ilana Rostovic. After a tense moment where a joke by Alexi nearly got Flag executed, Ilana calmed things down and invited them to a banquet.
Once they arrived at Frankenstein Manor, the team disembarked, and G.I. Robot suggested Flag, Sr. take a shot. Flag, Sr. told him to stay calm and noticed on the radar that Nina and Bride weren’t moving, assuming they’d been captured. He then explained the rescue plan to the team. When Flag, Sr. signaled the attack, they ambushed the mansion, with Flag, Sr. kicking in the door and pointing his gun. They found Bride tied up and screaming in distress. After Flag, Sr. removed her mouth tape, Bride revealed that Circe and her forces had escaped, and she was asking to be untied. Flag, Sr. was frustrated with her for putting herself in danger and ordered the team to head back to the castle.
Flag, Sr. quickly realized Circe’s plan to distract them and attack the Princess, so he urgently ordered the team to return to Poko Castle. Once inside the tank, they were shocked to find G.I. Robot carrying Nina in a bathtub, and Nina apologized to Flag, Sr. for being with Bride. Flag, Sr. reassured her it didn’t matter and asked Alexi to speed up the trip back to the castle. At the castle gates, the team engaged in a brutal battle with the Sons of Themyscira, and Flag, Sr. shot several enemies. G.I. Robot asked if they were fighting Nazis, and Flag, Sr. confirmed it, encouraging the robot to kill them. As the battle continued, G.I. Robot fired on the enemies with its triple cannons. The team took cover as they fought.
Circe attacked, blasting G.I. Robot, who was destroyed. Nina tried to go to him, but Flag, Sr. stopped her. They avoided Circe’s next blast, but she flew to the Princess’s room to kill her. Weasel pushed Circe out of the window and bit her, while Doctor Phosphorus burned her face, shocking Flag, Sr. Circe warned them they had doomed the world before being defeated. Flag, Sr. later bid farewell to Ilana Rostovic on a rooftop, sharing a kiss before leaving to return to Belle Reve. She expressed her love for him, but Flag, Sr. explained he had to leave for the mission. Back home, Flag, Sr. encountered Elizabeth Bates, who represented Weasel. She revealed that Weasel was accused of killing 8 children and unjustly imprisoned. Flag, Sr. reluctantly let her take him to speak with Weasel.
At an interrogation with Circe, Amanda Waller, Flag, Sr., and John Economos questioned her. Waller mocked Circe, who claimed she was trying to prevent a catastrophe. Flag, Sr. dismissed her as lying, but Economos suggested she was a clairvoyant. Flag, Sr. warned Waller not to let Circe enter her mind, but she ignored him. Circe's vision left Waller disturbed, and Economos confirmed Themyscira's existence to Flag, Sr., who struggled to believe in it, despite learning it was real.
Waller insisted the vision Circe showed was real, but Flag, Sr. still didn’t believe it. He questioned why Circe couldn’t foresee Weasel and Doctor Phosphorus’ attack, and MacPherson explained that clairvoyants can't control their visions. Flag, Sr. found this explanation convenient and suspicious. When Waller asked Economos to contact the Pokolistan Embassy, Flag, Sr. disagreed, arguing that they shouldn’t condemn someone for crimes they hadn’t committed. Waller, determined to save the world at any cost, made Flag, Sr. uncomfortable by implying their past intimacy didn’t mean he knew her. Feeling frustrated, Flag, Sr. dropped out of the mission and left.
Desperate to protect Rostovic, Flag, Sr. drove to her house while trying to reach the Amethyst Knights, but the guard didn’t understand him. After parking and looking for his keys, he was attacked by Eric Frankenstein, who slammed him against a wall. Flag, Sr. managed to fight back, shooting at Frankenstein and even kicking him, but when he tried to shoot again, he realized his gun was empty. After a brief struggle, he managed to reload, and in an awkward position, pointed his gun at Frankenstein’s head. Frankenstein, unexpectedly emotional, revealed that he wasn’t angry at Flag, Sr. for a personal reason but was upset over the Bride, leading Flag, Sr. to realize it wasn’t about the princess.
After Frankenstein calmed down, Flag, Sr. invited him to talk, offering him tea. They discussed their relationships, with Frankenstein comparing his bond with the Bride to the movie When Harry Met Sally. Flag, Sr. suggested they help each other, and Frankenstein, now seeing Flag, Sr. as a friend, agreed. The two later spied on Aisla MacPherson's lecture at Terrebone University, becoming suspicious of her unprofessional behavior. They were caught by some students, and Frankenstein made an awkward excuse. Flag, Sr. promised they’d get to the truth about MacPherson and stop her, hoping it would help Frankenstein win back the Bride.
When Frankenstein suggested killing MacPherson and her students, Flag, Sr. refused, telling him that wasn’t heroism. Instead, he suggested they search for evidence at her house while she was teaching. Later, Flag, Sr. became frustrated again when he tried calling the Pokolistan guards to reach Rostovic, only for the guard to cut him off once more. Flag, Sr. and Frankenstein infiltrated Dr. Aisla MacPherson’s house, where they found relics inside. As Flag, Sr. searched the house, he stepped in blood, followed the trail, and discovered MacPherson’s body, realizing the MacPherson they saw at the university was an impostor working for Circe.
In a panic, Flag, Sr. contacted Ilana Rostovic’s butlers and urgently warned her to leave the castle, as Task Force M was on its way to kill her. As Flag, Sr. tried to explain, Frankenstein interrupted, wanting to be seen as a hero, which angered Flag, Sr. He managed to get Rostovic’s attention, but he was forced to hang up when he saw the MacPherson impostor returning. Flag, Sr. told Frankenstein to hide, but he wasn’t thrilled with the idea of just hiding behind a birdcage and instead was told to hide behind the bed. The two then discovered that the MacPherson impostor was actually Clayface, a shape-shifting metahuman. Before they could escape, Clayface attacked, seriously injuring Flag, Sr. The creature’s assault left Flag, Sr. unconscious after breaking his back, but Frankenstein fought back and electrocuted Clayface, causing him to explode. As Flag, Sr. lay in pain, he asked Frankenstein to tell the Bride the truth, but fell unconscious before he could answer.
Flag, Sr. was rushed to the hospital, where Amanda Waller and John Economos found him in a coma with severe internal injuries. Waller watched over him, urging him to wake up so they could learn what happened and who wanted him dead. When Flag, Sr. awoke, he was able to barely speak, warning Waller that she was wrong about ordering the murder of Rostovic. With his last breath, he uttered Aisla MacPherson’s name, which led Waller and Economos to investigate the real MacPherson’s home.
