Rick's personality is enigmatic. His partner, Chelsea, acknowledges a defensive wall that he developed which denies anyone from truly knowing him. He eventually acknowledges this stems from his trauma in his childhood as a means of self-preservation. He demonstrates impulsive and defensive attitudes, but retains some degree of rationality and common sense in spite of this. He is vengeful - which becomes his hamartia when searching for the man who he believes killed his father.
Biography[]
Background[]
Rick was born to Gloria Hatchett and Jim Hollinger out of an affair. Rick did not know Jim was his father, believing it to be someone else. In his youth, Rick's supposed father was killed by Jim due to a land dispute. This turned Rick's mother to addiction which caused her death. Prior to this, Gloria told Rick that Jim was responsible for Rick's non-biological father's death. This resulted in Rick developing an isolationist attitude to people. He became acquainted with Frank. It is suggested Frank and Rick shared in hedonistic, criminal activities - but ultimately grew estranged. It is unknown what Rick does for work, though it is clear that it is illicit due to him having an arrest warrant in Australia.
The White Lotus[]
Rick arrives to The White Lotus resort in Koh Samui with his spiritualist girlfriend, Chelsea, who is younger than him. Initially, Rick comes off as stressed and dismissive, which concerns Chelsea. It becomes apparent Chelsea is fed up with Rick not letting her know him truly. Whilst there, Rick obsessively researched the hotel owners, believing that one of them had killed his father.
Rick reluctantly agrees to attend a meditation session, wherein he reveals his traumatic childhood and reluctance to introspect. Ultimately, Rick learns that he is guarding too much which inhibits him from discovering his own happiness. In spite of this, Rick decides to fly to Bangkok to find Jim Hollinger, the owner of The White Lotus, believing he killed his father (despite Chelsea's protest).
In Bangkok, Rick reunites with Frank, a friend from the past. Rick learns that Frank has become so hedonistic to the point of being mentally unstable, but manages to encourage Frank to help him locate Jim. The pair visit Jim at his property in Bangkok where Rick is able to isolate him. There, Rick confronts him about his past which Jim denies any involvement in. In lieu of this, Rick pulls a gun on him but is unable to kill or injure him. Instead, Rick tips Jim from his chair.
The following day, Jim and his wife and co-owner of The White Lotus, Sritala, arrive at the resort which Rick is staying at. There, Jim confronts Rick and reveals he is armed and will have Rick killed by his bodyguards. Panicked, Rick tells Chelsea to leave and flees. However, he spies Rick and in furious impulse, takes Jim's gun and shoots him dead. Sritala reveals to Rick that Jim is actually his father, causing Rick to flee once again. Rick kills Jim's bodyguards in a shootout, but notices that Chelsea has been caught in the crossfire. Rick is then shot and killed by Gaitok, a White Lotus security guard, on the order of Sritala, leading both of them to fall into a lake.
