Villain Overview

Prime: Imagine doing anything you want, then hopping to a timeline where you never did it. Imagine going anywhere, anytime, with nobody able to stop you.
C-137: Sounds lonely.
Prime: Lonely? Dude, you have
yourself -- your infinite selves. It's a nonstop party where all the guests are the only person we like. You think it's cool being the smartest man on Earth, but once we give you this technology, you become the smartest thing in every conceivable universe -- the Infinite Rick, a god.
C-137: Eh, pass.
Prime: Excuse me? Bro, Ricks don't pass on this. Who do you think you are?
C-137: A different kind of Rick, I guess.
Prime: Well, we'll see how long
that lasts.
~ Rick Prime before leaving Rick C-137's garage, and killing his wife and daughter.
Prime: Listen, Rick to Rick, he's got the weapon plans. Buddy, nip this in the bud. He's 14. What’s gonna happen the next time he gets mad at grandpa? (laughs) Let's do this then! You're welcome, by the way! I made you! I showed you infinity! And what did you do with it? Hang out with my grandson? Raise echoes of my daughter? (laughs again) What's your life without me?
C-137: Let's find out.
Prime: (laughs once more) Admit it! You would've
been me! I just walked into your garage before you walked into mine! But eventually, you did! YOU LIVED IN MY HOUSE!
~ Rick Prime's last words to Rick C-137 and villainous breakdown as the latter beats him to death.

Richard Daniel Sanchez, better known as Rick Prime, is the overarching antagonist of the Adult Swim animated Sci-Fi sitcom TV series Rick and Morty.

He is the alternate version and arch-nemesis of Rick C-137 due to ruining the latter's entire life, by killing both his original wife and daughter during his youth, prompting Rick to then invent the portal gun and go on a futile mission of revenge for decades, ultimately causing him to become the broken, depressed and self-destructive man he is. Even after being killed by Rick Sanchez, he continues to make a deep impression on the latter's existentialism for days to come. He is eventually revealed to be the true grandfather of Morty Smith, as well as his family-in-law which would be later adopted by Rick C-137 after leaving them.

Like all of his other versions, he was voiced by the series co-creator Justin Roiland (who also voiced Earl of Lemongrab in Adventure Time and Blendin Blandin in Gravity Falls) up until Season 6. In Season 7, he was voiced by Ian Cardoni.

Appearance[]

Being Rick's counterpart, the two share many identical features, such as their blue hair, gray skin and unibrow. What sets him apart from other Rick's, however, is his short slicked back hair and mysteriously youthful appearance. He is always seen wearing a navy shirt with a red stripe under a vest as well as navy pants with a lopsided belt.

Personality[]

For you to be bait, the guy'd have to value something. He truly does not give a sh*t.
~ Rick C-137 telling Morty how much of a psychopath his grandfather truly is.

Rick Prime is essentially the embodiment of all of the worst attributes that Rick has. He is an arrogant, nihilistic, narcissistic, self-righteous scientist with a god complex. He doesn’t care for anybody else and believes that the only thing that any Rick needs is his infinite selves. As such, he doesn’t like to "team up with other people." He prefers to not be found by others and likes to seclude himself, however he does love building elaborate bases where he can taunt whoever may enter.

While his exact motives are unknown, he seemingly spent a lot of his time going to different Ricks throughout the multiverse and giving them the Portal Gun formula. However, Rick Prime is shown to be incredibly spiteful and petty. He was surprised and angered when Rick C-137 refused to take the portal gun formula, and was disgusted that Rick benevolent was. So out of spite and pettiness for having been rejected, he kills both Diane and Beth. It can be presumed he did this to manipulate Rick into becoming as terrible as him and his other counterparts are and to also prove to Rick that his good-hearted nature could be easily destroyed, which unfortunately was mostly right.

He’s shown to be just as, if not more intelligent and strategic as Rick C-137 himself. In "Solaricks", he ends up setting up several traps and extra pre-recorded hologram screens to distract and confuse Rick while simultaneously taunting him, with his eyes on the pre-recordings even managing to follow Rick's every move in the present as though he were looking at his counterpart himself. And in "Ricktional Mortpoon's Rickmas Mortcation" he has used numerous body doubles of himself to confuse and misdirect Rick. He also shows an indignant and petulant side while pretending to be a naked clone, shaking his bare bottom at Rick and Morty to mock them, with his later meeting with Jerry Prime confirming that it was him.

Curiously enough, he lacks his counterpart's hostility towards Jerry, complementing Jerry Prime on "arcing out" and even praising him as a "badass" when he slashes his throat, albeit in a condescending manner. Being the psychopath he is though, he ultimately doesn't care for his son-in-law any more and he doesn't even care about the rest of his family, outright admitting that he "never got to close to the concept" before coldly killing Jerry Prime despite the latter not posing a threat to him.

In "Unmortricken", Rick Prime would eventually become increasingly consumed with sociopathic pride when he uses his Omega device to exterminate every alternate versions of Diane, and Rick's entire generations of his family from the multiverse, starting with both their uncle, Slow Mobius, even if it hurt him, showing briefly saddened as he closed his eyes. However he also enjoys sadistically tormenting his nemesis psychologically with imagery of his original dead wife through advanced machinery that he uses to attack him, including giant robots of Diane, which he brags about even in death to destroy every aspect of Rick-C137's existentialism, and being cocky and overconfident to the degree where he underestimates his enemies enough to bring them to his own operational base while mocking them with dispenses of his own weaponry to the point that Evil Morty is able to paralyze him when he lets his guard down, which was long enough to seal his fate to be given to his archenemy.

Powers and Abilities[]

Rick Prime is perhaps the most powerful and genius being in the Multiverse due to mainly being one of the only two versions of Rick who gained the knowledge of Time Travel as he shared to others for a grand plan, that being said he is also capable of creating impossibly advance time manipulating gear, including being able to outsmart Rick C-137 himself while remaining hidden for decades without fail. He also demonstrates this during his final battle with his nemesis Rick Sanchez and Evil Morty when he deduced his predictability attacks, including countering his mainstream enemy's attacks.

His abilities and equipment are seemingly mostly the same as C-137's but are more advanced and above than the latter, even almost killing the Mainstream Rick during their final confrontation. In addition to this, however, he seems to possess some sort of regeneration ability, which he uses to quickly heal his neck wound when Jerry Prime stabs it and even instantly recovered his body parts along with his clothes after his Battle with Rick which left both men mutilated and defeated. He might be immortal or have some age-defying ability as he appears the exact same age he did when he first met Rick. He also has an unexplained ability to appear in multiple places at once, which helps make him untraceable.

Weaknesses[]

Arrogance: While Rick Prime is incredibly smart and calculating, he is also rather careless and underestimates people that he considers to be beneath him such as Jerry who he thinks of as a concept rather than a person. This has led to him letting his guard down and getting surprised attacked by his enemies such as when he got his throat cut by Jerry when the former wasn't paying attention, and when he was talking to Evil Morty who was diguised as Morty Prime, asking him if he should just get it over with instead of killing him right away, leaving him wide open to Evil Morty's attack, and getting incapacitated.

Biography[]

Past[]

Like most Ricks in the Central Finite Curve, Rick Prime would go on to become a scientist as an adult and have a wife named Diane and a daughter named Beth, but he would ultimately become neglectful and uncaring towards them and choose science over his family, eventually callously abandoning them both. Unknown to him, Beth would later marry a man named Jerry and give birth to two children, Summer and Morty, with the latter going on to become the very Morty that serves as the deuteragonist of the show.

Sometime later, he would meet another version of himself from Dimension C-137 who, like him, was a small-time inventor married to a woman named Diane, and with a daughter named Beth. Rick Prime entered Rick C-137's dimension as he was attempting to perfect his portal technology, and tried to convince him to become an inter-dimensional traveler. However, unlike what he himself did, Rick C-137 instead opted to stay with Diane and Beth, viewing his family as more important, much to the other's frustration and confusion. Rick Prime left the dimension, but not before killing Diane and Beth with a bomb as Rick C-137 watched in horror. Bitter with vengeance, Rick C-137 eventually invented the portal gun and killed many alternate versions of himself in his attempts to kill Rick Prime.

At some point, Rick Prime found out about Rick C-137's quest to kill him so he went into hiding but regardless, Rick C-137 never got the chance to find him and get revenge, so he instead settled down with the aforementioned Morty and an alternate version of their family.

Season 6[]

Years later, Rick C-137's botched attempt at resetting the portal index after his and Morty's encounter with Evil Morty led to every dimensionally displaced counterpart being sent back to their home realities, including Rick Prime. Rick C-137 realized that Rick Prime was finally back in his home dimension and went to his hideout with Morty to kill him, However, as soon as he arrived, Rick Prime, appearing through a pre-recorded message, decided to further antagonize Rick C-137, showing that there is a naked Rick taunting him inside a capsule (that Rick being the actual Rick Prime) and making it seems like his hideout is rigged to blow. Ultimately, Rick C-137 and Morty chooses to leave his hideout so he can rescue Summer, Beth, and Space Beth, once again leaving Rick Prime victorious and allowing him to get away with his crimes, at least for the time being.

Later, Rick Prime came across the alternate Jerry in his home dimension. Jerry briefly suggested they team up, but Rick Prime denied the idea, saying it’s too much work for him to manage a team. As Rick Prime was talking, Jerry slit his throat in an attempt to kill him. However, Rick Prime’s otherwise fatal injury healed itself, after which he promptly killed Jerry.

Season 7[]

At some point, he built the Omega Device, which would allow him to erase any person he desires from the multiverse. His first use of this weapon was to erase many versions of Diane from existence, at which point he would use his many body doubles to lure every erased Dianes grief stricken and vengeful Ricks onto the same quest for revenge as C-137. These Ricks would eventually kill a Rick Prime body double that would trigger a strain of portal fluid that would transport them to an unknown location where they would be forced to fight each other to the death for Primes amusement under the promise of the last Rick left alive having his Diane restored to life, which was shown to be a lie as the winning Rick would instead be forced to fight a robot with Dianes face and voice who would kill them anyway.

His trap would eventually ensnare Rick C-137, Morty, and Evil Morty who would begrudgingly team up to escape the death match and stop Rick Prime. Rick manages to track Prime to his lair with Evil Morty's help. Prime then declares his intention to erase every member of Ricks family from existence just to torment him further, demonstrating the Omega Devices power by erasing Slow Mobius and his every counterpart in front of him (despite Prime admitting to supposedly like him). A fight breaks out with Prime proving to be a match for Rick and Evil Morty on his own, dominating the fight until both Ricks get stunned by a giant robot Dianes fist crushing them.

Regenerating his mangled body, Prime approaches one of the 2 Morty's who appears to be the main Morty. Despite seemingly recognizing him as being his original grandson, he tries to kill him anyway, only to be stunned by a hidden taser in the arm, with it being revealed that the Morty Prime he tried to kill was Evil Morty who had tricked him by putting his shirt and eye-patch on the main Morty to lower Prime's guard. As Evil Morty downloads the plans for the Omega Device and shuts down Primes remaining body doubles, Prime offers to team up with Evil Morty, only for the latter to refuse and leave him at the mercy of C-137.

After years of hunting him down in anticipation of his revenge, Rick viciously beats Prime to death, ignoring his warnings of Evil Morty using the Omega Device against him. Recognizing his end had come, he spends his last few moments of life viciously mocking his mortal enemy on how it had been he who made him the man he is and that his life would mean nothing without Prime giving him purpose, smugly pointing out how he had briefly lived in his original home and adopted his grandson to give his life meaning. Rick eventually beats the last bit of life out of his hated counterpart but learns in the aftermath that his victory had brought him no satisfaction, because his original family was still dead. Despite how Rick still has Morty and his current family, he still feels even more lost than before.

Quotes[]

Prime: Imagine doing anything you want, then hopping to a timeline where you never did it. Imagine going anywhere, anytime, with nobody able to stop you!
C-137: Sounds lonely.
Prime: Lonely? Dude, you have yourself. Your infinite selves! It's a nonstop party where all the guests are the only person we like. You think it's cool being the smartest man on Earth, but once we give you this technology, you become the smartest thing in every conceivable universe. The Infinite Rick! A GOD!
C-137: Eh, pass.
Prime: Excuse me? Bro, Ricks don't pass on this! Who do you think you are?!
C-137: A different kind of Rick, I guess.
Prime: Well, we'll see how long that lasts.
~ Rick Prime's conversation with Rick Sanchez before killing his wife and daughter.
Woah-ho-ho, you found me! I'd shoot the first monitor, too. Listen, I'm not here, or am I? There's the clone you found! Or maybe it's me, all naked. Just a little Keyser Söze. I mean, why would I admit it's not? Oh-ho-ho yeah! Look at him! Look at him go! Look at him dance! Or maybe it's me! Again, it might not be me, or like a Saw thing. I'm very sneaky. Here's a bunch of kill-bots to deal with while you wrestle with that. Obviously, I don't know who I'm talking to here. It's all pre-recorded. But if you got this far, you probably think you're real special. Tell you what. Oop, there he goes! Maybe that actually was me. If you follow him down there, we can do a big fight. 50% chance I'm not lying! This place totally might go up, by the way! Here's a bunch of countdowns! One of them's probably accurate.
~ Rick Prime's pre-recorded message.
Rick: Ooh, this is a development!
Jerry: Waah!
Rick: Shhhh! Woah-woah-woah-woah-woah, little guy! Easy! You're a Jerry, right? Never got too close to the concept. Boy, you have really arc-ed out!
Jerry: Were you... putting on pants?
Rick: What? Oh, yeah, I was... naked to f**k with a guy. Speaking of, did you... talk to me or... a little kid around here?
Jerry: Maybe. Why? Cause if you hate them too, I could be down for a little team-up.
Rick: Eh, I really don't team up anymore. Managing people, such a headache.
~ Rick Prime's conversation to Jerry Smith, his own son-in-law.
Oh goddamn, dude. Badass!
~ Rick Prime to Jerry Smith before shooting him.
Jerry: Why are you here?
Rick: Buddy, I have been asking myself that exact same question.
~ Rick Prime to his son-in-law Jerry before killing him.
Looks like there’s enough of you to start the next ride! That or just one really heavy Rick. This whole thing is automated, which I do point out specifically to enhance the humiliation. Here we go! If you’re seeing this, you’re me, except, you know, less. But you acted like you were better, so I killed your beloved Diane. Partly to devastate you, mostly so I only have to record one message. Some of you may have noticed that it’s not just your Diane that’s gone. She’s also been erased from every universe across infinity. And you might be wondering why. Diane was wiped from all existence by The Weapon Too Cool for a Name. Known to inferiors as The Omega Device. And it’s my weapon. But it’s your fault I had to use it on her. So, if you want to see the Rick that ruined your life, look around. There’s so many of you. But that’s why I want to make a deal. One of you is going to get Diane back. All you have to do is be the last Rick left.
~ Rick Prime's message to all the Ricks he captured and forced to play in his sadistic game.
Honestly, wife guy, I do miss when it was just us. The only two Ricks who actually invented portal travel. Anyone else cheat up to a ride later. Like your car?
~ Rick Prime to Rick, revealing that he wrecked up his car.

Trivia[]

  • Rick Prime shares his name with one of the members of the Council of Ricks.
  • He refers to Keyser Söze, another villain while he is taunting Rick C-137.
  • In his death episode, Prime is shown to have ruined not only C-137's life, but at least five other Ricks as well. Even a nicer one who admits to his faults, even if would still act on them.
