~ Rick explaining his motives and revealing his true nature. |
Rick Youngblood is the main antagonist of the 2014 slasher film Varsity Blood. He was the stepfather of the main protagonist, Hannah Wallace. After his first-born son was sent to a rehabilitation center, a year later on Halloween, he dressed as Hogeye High School's mascot and went after the people he held responsible.
He is portrayed by Chris Hlozek.
Personality[]
While dressed as the mascot, Rick remains mute, but he shows sadistic and persistent traits. Out of costume, he fakes the role of a concerned father. When he's revealed, he shows his true colors as a treacherous psychopath who sees hunting humans as fun. He betrayed not only his partner and girlfriend, but his son Ben, by attempting to pin the blame on him. Despite claiming to want revenge, Rick doesn't actually care for Ben and simply wanted revenge on the kids for tarnishing his family name by getting his son sent to a mental hospital, or "retard house" as he calls it.
Biography[]
Rick Youngblood was a well-known farmer in the small town of Hogeye, Texas. He had two sons named Ben and Mark with an unnamed woman. While attending middle school, Ben developed an obsessive crush on a very kind junior high student and cheerleader named Ginny Graves. In order to get closer to her, Ben joined the sports team as the mascot. After a game on the night of Halloween, during an after party on the field, the cheerleaders decided to do a pyramid. But, they were too drunk and ended up dropping Ginny, killing her and devastating Ben. He became suicidal and was sent to Hughes Rehabilitation Center, where he became catatonic. Because they were minors at the time and one of them was the daughter of the sheriff, the kids were not charged with manslaughter.
A year later, Rick and his new girlfriend Nancy Wallace, planned to kill off the teens that escaped justice on Halloween night and frame Ben, but both for different reasons. Where as Rick wanted revenge, Nancy wanted her daughter Hannah to get a cheer-leading scholarship and wanted to keep her from being corrupted by the athletes who were responsible for Ginny's death. Unfortunately, Hannah did end up befriending them, after replacing Ginny on the cheer team. The night before Halloween, Rick snuck into the school and killed the mascot and the head cheerleader. The next night, Rick and Nancy put their plan into motion, but Hannah was encouraged by her new friends to attend a private party at the Old Williamson Farmhouse.
After Rick had been told by Sheriff Jones about Ben's escape, he stole the mascot costume and followed Hannah and her friends to the farmhouse. An argument between the group erupted outside, but was interrupted by Rick, who shot Linda Jones in the eye with an arrow. The group fled into the house and barricaded the door. Rick sabotaged the cars and kept anyone from escaping alive. As the group tried to make plans to escape, they were all foiled and each of them were killed, with only Hannah, Jeff, and Bubba remaining. After returning and finding all of their friends dead, Rick attacked Jeff and knocked him down a flight of stairs. Hannah escaped by crawling off the roof and returned to the fire pit to grab a weapon, but accidentally killed Bubba who had recovered and startled her. The sheriff finally arrived and asked Hannah where Linda was, and Rick responded, while standing over Linda.
Enraged, Sheriff Jones attempted to shoot Rick, but was stabbed with an arrow. As the sheriff collapsed, he pulled off Rick's mask, revealing his face to Hannah. Hannah ran for the gun and held Rick at gunpoint, demanding an explanation. Rick explained his motives and Nancy emerged and revealed that she was also a part of the plan, but didn't want Rick to kill Hannah. Nancy took the gun and held Rick at gunpoint, trying to protect her daughter from Rick, explaining that they won't rat him out. But, Rick attacked her with the hatchet while she looked away for a second. Before Nancy died, she managed to shoot Rick, but he was wearing a bulletproof vest and recovered, taunting Hannah as she ran away. As Rick was attempting to make a bonfire for the bodies, Hannah came back and hit him with a tree branch, to no effect. Rick grabbed her, but Jeff recovered and punched him. The two fought, but Rick overpowered Jeff and was about to kill him, when Hannah struck him in the head with the hatchet, killing him. As the police and ambulance were finishing up, Hannah asks the detective if Ben had been found, and he answers no. As the film ends, the camera pans up to a jack-o'-lantern set on the window sill of the farmhouse, and a hand that grabs the carving knife, implying that Ben was there and might seek revenge for his father's death.
