Villain Overview

Riddle me this!
~ The Riddler's catchphrase.
With an obsessive-compulsive need for attention, Edward Nygma is determined to be the most outlandish of Gotham's criminals, concocting elaborate series of clues and riddles around his crimes. Batman has proven a worthy opponent, capable of deducing the Riddler's plans, but Nygma is dedicated to creating a mystery the Dark Knight will not be able to solve in time.
~ The Riddler's bio in Batman: Arkham Asylum.
Can you hear me, Batman? I know you can. Yes, it is I. Edward Nygma, the Riddler, and more importantly your intellectual superior. My genius has allowed me to easily hack into your primitive communications. Ah ha ha. My goal is simple. You complete a series of amazingly taxing challenges and... well, you'll see. Ready for your first one? Good but be careful. Don't CUT yourself on this SHARPLY observed portrait.
~ The Riddler when first contacting Batman.

Edward Nashton, better known as Edward Nigma or the Riddler, and previously known as Enigma, is a major antagonist in the Batman: Arkham franchise.

He is one of Gotham City's most professional criminals who is obsessed with proving to the world that he is smarter than all people, specifically Batman. He tasks the Caped Crusader to optionally find his personal trophies and solve certain riddles in a series of challenging puzzles.

In the games, he was voiced by Wally Wingert, who also voiced Mr. Rogers in Family Guy, the Almighty Tallest Red in the Invader Zim franchise, Patrick the Pirate in Return to Never Land, the Cluster Ambassador in My Life as a Teenage Robot, Hamegg in the English dub of the 2003 Astro Boy anime, Cervantes de Leon in the English dub of the Soulcalibur video games, Rufus Shinra in the English dub of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, Amshel Goldsmith in Blood+, Cubot and D-Fekt in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, M.O.D.O.K. in The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Threatpack in Skylanders: Trap Team, Kinshiki Ōtsutsuki in the English dub of Boruto: Naruto the Movie and Howard Brand in Serious Sam 4. In Assault on Arkham, he was voiced by Matthew Gray Gubler.

Personality[]

Though his intellect is staggering, Nigma's IQ is only dwarfed by his insanity, inferiority complex, violent behavior and intense narcissistic hubris. Despite this, he is emotionally immature and a child at heart because of being still traumatized by his cruel childhood and his abusive father who undermined him at every turn. Though in his eyes, he is a flawless and infallible human "colossus" (or in his own words "The World's Greatest Everything") Nygma displays multiple flawed anti-social behavior, one of them his childlike behavior and because of this his characteristics, even into adult years similarly represents that of an adolescent teenager. Amongst these traits of his childishness are competitiveness, recklessness, stubbornness, pride, rash outbursts, fiery temper, aggressive tantrums and sullenness. Despite being megalomaniacal, psychopathic and egocentric, at his core Nygma is deeply insecure and emotionally scarred. Having never received the recognition he (or at least believed he deserved) it stands to reason that he pathologically has to prove how smart he is, especially to himself and displays what appears to be an inferiority complex in contrast to his overconfident demeanor. Also, despite being defeated, incapacitated and humiliated multiple times, his pride is never diminished nor is his magnificently over-fed ego and will constantly think that he would come out on top, never thinking that history would repeat itself. He shows cowardice at times, a prime example is when Catwoman, out of revenge for kidnapping her on Halloween steals all his funds, he begs her for mercy.

His hypocritical arrogance can be evident at times. While he assures his hostage, Catwoman that he does not cheat he actually admits during patient logs to Doctor Young that he once did cheat in his school's competition as to impress his father who saw through this and hit him for lying. Later in the game he actually places his adversary, Batman in a "fight he couldn't win" by swarming him with Riddler-Bots that only Catwoman could hit. Nygma defends this while being taken to the GCPD stating that Batman should have been able to hack into the robots mainframe and defeat them all. Undeniably his greatest weakness was that he considered himself undefeatable (ignoring that he has been countless times in the past) and his arrogance makes him grotesquely reckless and overconfident. Examples include when Batman had defeated the final Riddle Room and rescued the hostage, he gave her no code, showing that he had no doubt in his mind that Batman would not be able to defeat his final room. His egomania was so powerful that in captivity at the GCPD while being confronted by Aaron Cash with a taser he still continues to defy his captor which leads to him being electrocuted.

When Enigma first appeared in Origins, he was extremely calm and collected if psychotic and taunting but rarely showed any anger. As the Arkham series continues, or more specifically as he continued kept getting defeated, Nygma becomes more deluded and his mental health state deteriorates even further. While in Arkham Origins, he focuses solely on releasing blackmail data to the general public, in later games he obsesses totally over assuring intellectual dominance over Batman. As well at the beginning of Arkham Knight, he denies having an ego and refers to himself as Batman's "one true enemy" when in reality, though he understands that Nygma is dangerous moreover considers him a plight annoyance and normally handles him after the major threats (Joker, Scarecrow, Bane etc.). This is further emphasized when Scarecrow reveals Batman's identity as Bruce Wayne to the world and Nygma mocks him over thinking he could hide his true identity from him, indicating that he was the one who unmasked Batman while in Arkham City, when confronting Strange through the Interview Tapes he has no idea of the Dark Knight's real name something which stayed this way throughout the series. However it is possible that Nygma believed that he always knew Batman was Bruce Wayne because in AO he has a chart of two names whom he believed were the Bat; Wayne and Harvey Dent being them. However he does not confirm his own theory so it does not count.

Though the full aspects of Nigma's past have not been divulged, it's been hinted he was constantly bullied, by both his father and peers. In these regards it is a second factor of his intense resentment towards the Caped Crusader, not only how Batman constantly undermines his intelligence by defeating, imprisoning and humiliating him but how he has begun to compare the Dark Knight to his childhood bullies, specifically how he constantly uses physical force to arrest him, something that only worsened his obsession in defeating him. He even goes as far to describe Batman as both a "pugilist" and a "thug" and admits that he has a perfect memory of every time the latter hurt him. Amongst other things Nygma possesses deep-rooted hatred for his father, shown during his final battle with Batman at the orphanage he scream in his direction, "DIE FATHER! I mean Batman!".

Despite his signature penchant for riddles and tendency to place his victims in extremely complicated death traps, Nygma was also highly knowledgeable of people's metaphorical "skeletons" in their closets, dark pasts and secrets. He was able to amass enough data as to use it as extortion and blackmail in Arkham Origins which he planned to release to the general public. It's unknown what Nigma's incentive is in this, there have been hints that Nigma considered this another form of vigilantism but states that his methods were more "refined" than that of Batman's however he also knew it would cause anarchy, proving him to be the psychopathic cyber-terrorist he is. His knowledge of people's buried secrets was further shown during the Interview Tape with Strange in which he reveals he knows of him manipulating Jervis Tetch to use his mind control formula as to manipulate Quincy Sharp into opening Arkham City, as well he was also aware of Strange's custom-made Batsuit that he cried into, doubting that he "wasn't worthy" [to be Batman]. Nigma however was also extremely frustrated about how, unlike Strange he had no idea who the Batman was and when he discovered such he demanded for Strange to tell him, which he refused, leaving him totally blank for words.

Skills and Abilities[]

  • Genius Intellect: Despite his ego and psychosis, the Riddler is a legitimate genius who can manipulate and tactically utilize others for his own goals.
    • Hacking: As seen in Arkham Origins, the Riddler is a very skilled hacker that can access government information and security cameras to gather damning evidence against people.
    • Surgery: In Arkham Knight, the Riddler was able to surgically implant bombs in criminal skulls without any apparent help.

Weaknesses[]

  • Weak: Despite his genius, the Riddler is a very weak and intimidating figure with no fighting ability. He only stood a chance against Batman and Catwoman in Arkham Knight by equipping an enormous mech.

Arsenal[]

  • Mech Suit: The Riddler's ultimate weapon was an enormous green and gold battle suit which he used to fight Batman and Catwoman during Arkham Knight. It vastly increased his strength and durability.

Quotes[]

Arkham Origins[]

Enigma: Well, well, if it isn't the King Thug himself. Figured it was only a matter of time before you showed up. Sorry about the mess downstairs.
Batman: Who is this?
Enigma: Think of me as a great mystery. One you're never going to solve.
Batman: Enigma, then.
Enigma: Oh ho ho ho ho ho, you must think you're so clever. Well, how's this for clever. I've taken control of towers all over the city. As long as they're active, your Batwing's useless. And it looks like it's gonna stay that way. I mean, this one's practically BEGGING to be taken offline and you still can't hack it. Pun intended, of course.
~ Enigma's first words when Batman discovered his first jammer and his first words in the series chronologically.
Enigma: Hmmmmmm... Black Mask's not going to like this.
Batman: What are you talking about?
Enigma: Wouldn't you like to know?
~ Enigma when his first jammer was disabled.
Well, look who just showed up. Have you really decided to try and take me on? Get to it then. I'm looking forward to seeing you fail. You know, if you'd asked nicely, I'd of opened it for you.
~ Enigma when Batman arrived at his second jammer.
Enigma: Congratulations are in order. Maybe you're not as stupid as I've been led to believe.
Batman: Why are you doing this, Enigma?
Enigma: Direct! I like it. So I'll tell you. Gotham's sullied. It's filled with brutes who control this city through violence and intimidation.
Batman: You didn't answer my question.
Enigma: Because you didn't let me finish! I want to get rid of them, Batman. To improve Gotham's intellectual and moral standing. But I'm not a thug like you. My approach is a bit more... refined.
Batman: What you're doing is no different than stealing. There's nothing
refined about it.
Enigma: Hm hm hm. Your response is as predictable as it is banal. Goodbye.
~ Enigma when Batman disabled his second jammer.
Batman: Enigma? Where are you?
Enigma: I'm right here. Well- figuratively speaking anyway. Disappointed I didn't choose to meet up in person?
Batman: What's this about? Sionis hire me you to throw me off his trail?
Enigma: Think of me as an information broker. I've got data handlers everywhere-feeding me all kinds of interesting stuff!
Batman: And you think this is going to destroy Gotham?
Enigma: Ohhhh yes. See-bullet wounds and broken bones will eventually heal. But incriminating photos? Videos? Emails? That kind of damage can never be repaired. Tomorrow morning-when I release everything I've got, the city's going to collapse. Resignations. Arrests. Deaths. It'll be chaos in the streets, Batman and there's not a thing you can do to stop me!
~ Enigma when Batman entered his headquarters.
I figured you'd try and get all caveman on my equipment. It's password protected, I'm afraid with 10,000 volts of electricity. You've lost, Batman. Might as well head home and get some rest. With everyone's deepest, darkest secrets about to go on public display-I've got a feeling tomorrow's going to be very busy day for you.
~ Enigma when Batman tried to smash his server.
Ready for round three, then? Let's see what you can do. Oh, right. There are also some things we should discuss but we can attend them when you're finished. Assuming you can finish...
~ Enigma when Batman reached his third jammer.
I'm upping the stakes, Batman-just like I promised. Tread carefully.
~ Enigma after Batman disabled his third jammer.
Another day, another door. They're just no match for you!
~ Enigma when Batman reached his fourth jammer.
Enigma: Interesting. Watching you figure that one out was a real treat. I'll make sure the next one is even more provocative.
Batman: This isn't a game, Enigma.
Enigma: Oh, but it is! And one you're more than welcome to stop playing. Now-you need to stop interfering with my work. Tackling these towers is one thing, but... my handlers. My data. My network relays. Those aren't mean for you so back off!
~ Enigma after Batman disabled his fourth jammer.
Hello again! I'm afraid you'll find I've stepped things up considerably. Which means I think our time together is drawing to a close. It's been fun, Batman, but all good things must come to an end.
~ Enigma when Batman reached his first relay.
I'm disappointed, Batman. You do realise there are other ways to overcome obstacles besides smashing them?
~ Enigma when Batman smashed the relay.
Well, I guess that's one way to solve a problem.
~ Enigma when Batman smashed the second relay.
Enigma: What?! H-how did it-?! I was sure you'd fail. No-one is this lucky.
Batman: You need to stop this.
Enigma: Stop what?! Cleaning up the streets? Ensuring the GCPD actually does its job? Removing corruption from the system? Was it one of those in particular you took issue with, or all of them?
Batman: You're using the data you've stolen to blackmail people.
Enigma: So? It gets the job done. And it's certainly kinder than the beatings you're so fond of doling out. Think on that.
~ Enigma when Batman disabled his fifth jammer.
Well, this is certainly the last time we'll be speaking. And frankly, I'm glad. Your self-righteous posturing is getting on my nerves.
~ Enigma when Batman arrived at his sixth jammer.
Careful, that's public property you're destroying. Crawling around in vents like a common rat. How... expected.
~ Enigma when Batman reached his sixth jammer.
Enigma: You're cheating aren't you? You're getting help from someone. But who... Who's smart enough to outsmart me?!
Batman: No-one's helping me, Enigma. Did you ever consider maybe you're not as clever as you think?
Enigma: Pfff. Says the man who seems to have mistaken Christmas Eve for Halloween! Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! In case you haven't noticed-I've got the entire city under surveillance, feeding me all of its dirty little secrets. And I did it all on your watch, o great guardian of Gotham. So what do you have to say to THAT?
Batman: I'm taking your network down.
Enigma: Pfff. Spoken like a true Neanderthal. Well-you can certainly try.
~ Enigma when Batman disabled his sixth jammer.
It's over, Batman. I've put everything I've got into this one! Throw yourself at it for a while, if you must, but you're not cracking it. Not a chance.
~ Enigma when Batman neared his seventh jammer.
Enigma: Alright, you've made your point. So why don't we just agree to disagree and go our separate ways?
Batman: I don't think so.
Enigma: What's wrong with you? It's not like I'm backing the bad guys here. Well, not usually.
Batman: You're invading people's privacy.
Enigma: You've got how many assassins running around out there and you're lecturing me on selling personal information? Way to prioritise! You going after Gotham Optics next? Or maybe some telemarketers? Oooo.
Batman: If that information gets into the wrong hands, people could get hurt because of you.
Enigma: And people DO get hurt because of you. So I assume you'll be handing yourself over to the police now? Heh heh heh. That's what I thought.
~ Enigma when Batman disabled his seventh jammer.
Stay away from the tower, Batman. I've got work to do and now you're just getting in my way.
~ Enigma when Batman reached the eighth jammer.
Enigma: You must be feeling pretty good about yourself, Batman. I mean, you took down all the towers! Which means you've foiled my plan... except, oh wait. I already have all the data I need. And as soon as I'm done uploading it-so will everyone in Gotham.
Batman: There's still time for me to put an end to this.
Enigma: There is. Just no very much. It was a valiant attempt, though. You get an A for effort but an F for impact.
~ Enigma when his eighth and final jammer was defeated.
Well, look at that. You figured it out. I'm impressed. Annoyed too. But your achievement signals a level of intellect rarely seen in Gotham. It seems you're quite the riddle. Now, don't get too comfortable. You see, I learned something else tonight. The nastiest, dirty little secret you can imagine. It puts the rest of my collection to shame. But I'm qoing to wait to release it-if only because it means I get to watch you squirm as you wonder what on Earth it is... I'll be in touch soon.
~ Enigma when his plan was foiled.

Assault on Arkham[]

Haven't you solved it yet? The Black Spider is Batman!
~ The Riddler having worked out the trap.

Arkham Asylum[]

So you did it. Well done! I would have expected a child to work that one out, let alone the world's greatest detective. Ah ha ha.
~ The Riddler when Batman solved his first riddle.
Dr. Penelope Young: Patient Interview #21. Patient name is Edward Nygma, also known as the riddle. So, Edward. Warden Sharp tells me you've been leaving threatening messages on the walls, again.
Riddler: One would have to be severely paranoid to read threats into harmless riddles, Doctor Young. May I treat you with one?
Young: Very well.
Riddler: What walks on four legs, then two legs and finally three?
Young: A human being. As a baby, it crawls on four legs, as an adult it walks on two and in later years it uses a cane.
Riddler: Hm hm hm hm hm. Good try, but the answer to all three is a baby. True, it crawls on all four but cut off its legs and it can wiggle on only two limbs. Give it a crutch, it can hobble around on three. You see.
Young: That's horrible. How can you even joke about that?
Riddler: Easily, Doctor. It's not my baby.
~ The Riddler's first interview tape.
Young: Taped Interview 39. Patient's name is Edward Nygma. At this point, I have to decide if Mr. Nygma is a suitable candidate for the TITAN process. I'd like to talk about your childhood.
Riddler: Miserable. Next?
Young: By all accounts, that is where your fascination with riddles began. I believe discussing those years could help explain your compulsive behaviour.
Riddler: Very well... My father hated me. Always called me a moron.
Young: I see.
Riddler: I was determined to prove him wrong, so I entered a contest at school. A twenty dollar prize to the kid who could figure out an almost impossible logic puzzle. I won, of course.
Young: And that pleased your father?
Nygma: Hardly. He was convinced that I cheated. He kept yelling "you must have cheated! Admit it, you moron! You cheated!" I swore that I didn't and he hit me for lying.
Young: I'm sorry to hear that, Edward.
Riddler: Don't be. He was right.
~ The Riddler's second interview tape.
Young: Patient Interview 44. This is yet another interview with Edward Nygma. I have yet to make up my mind whether he is a genius or just deluded. Whichever one he is, just being in his company is both irritating and annoying.
Riddler: Hello, Mrs. Young. You look tired. Anything you need my help with?
Young: No thank you, Edward. I am here to help you. We all are.
Riddler: Forgive my arrogance, Doctor, but, if you think I need your help, well, you're in the right place.
Young: Let's look at it a different way. Throughout your career, you have specialised in bizarre traps and convoluted clues that, more often than not, result in the deaths of the unfortunate participants.
Riddler: And if the citizens of Gotham were smarter, my games would be merely an amusing distraction.
Young: Instead of deathtraps.
Riddler: You really should be thamking me. Weeding out the ignorant, the stupid, the useless. But don't worry. I'm sure you would survive. Ah ha ha. What a lovely photo on your desk, Doctor. Your family? Mother perhaps?
Young: Put that down. Get out. Guards!
~ The Riddler's third interview tape.
Young: Let's discuss your obsession with Batman.
Riddler: Hardly an obsession, Miss Young. I simply feel an obligation to expose him.
Young: You know who he is?
Riddler: More importantly, I know what he is.
Young: What do you mean?
Riddler: It's obvious. The mask, the weapons, the scare tactics, he's a criminal. No different than Joker, Two-Face or myself.
Young: Most people consider him a hero.
Riddler: Most people are idiots. They can't see Batman for the villain he is. Riddle me this. How did he get his car and gadgets?
Young: I don't-
Riddler: With money stolen from the criminals he "defeats." Why does Gordon turn a blind eye to his antics? Batman bribes him! The answers are right in front of your stupid, gawking face.
Young: Edward, please. Calm down...
Riddler: Wake up, Gotham! No sane, law abiding man does these things! No-one's that selfless! Batman is as vile as they come!
Young: Security! Security!
~ The Riddler's fourth interview tape.
Young: This is my final interview tape with Edward. I have gone as far as I can. I can no longer tolerate his mood swings and tantrums. I have more important work to be getting on with. He will be transferred to Dr. Whistler's care next week.
Riddler: Good morning, Doctor. How are you today?
Young: I'm fine, thank you Edward. You're in a good mood.
Riddler: I'm always in rare spirits when I'm about to be released.
Young: Edward, you know you're don't come up for parole for another three years.
Riddler: First thing I'll do is have dinner at that Italian place on 19th Street.
Young: Seriously, Edward...
Riddler: I only hope Joker hasn't completely trashed the city. Ah well, I'm sure I'll find out soon enough.
Young: Wait, have you been in contact with The Joker? He escaped Arkham weeks ago!
Riddler: And yet, one hears things...
Young: What things? What have you heard?
Riddler: Oh, something about a surprise party for Batman. I forgot the rest. You know Joker. Yak, yak, yak.
Young: Edward, if you know anything, you've got to tell me! Lives could be at stake! What did Joker say?
Riddler: You forget, Doctor. I'm the one who asks the riddles.
~ The Riddler's fifth and final interview tape.
What?! You've destroyed them all?! But... But that's impossible!
~ The Riddler when Batman destroyed the last of the Joker Teeth.
I'm losing my patience. You're cheating. You must be.
~ The Riddler whilst Batman downloaded his location.
What?! You did it? You must have cheated. There is no way you could have beaten me. Well, you asked for it Batman. My final challenge for the whole of Gotham is just seconds away.
~ The Riddler when Batman solved his last puzzle.
Riddler: What? Sirens. The police! You cheated, Batman. You couldn't have outsmarted me.
Police: Police! Open up! Down on the ground! Down on the ground!
Riddler: Tell me! How did you work out where I was? Do you hear me? I, Edward Nygma, will... AAAAAAAGH!
~ The Riddler before being arrested.

Arkham Knight[]

Riddler: Forget Scarecrow. It's time to face your one true nemesis, Batman. (...) Riddle me this. Why would a Batman visit an abandoned orphanage?
Catwoman: (snarkily) Eddie, sweetie, you've confused me with Robin. The big guy and I aren't all that close.
(Cuts back to Riddler)
Riddler: Oh, I know! It's because of what will happen to his feline friend if he doesn't get here in time. Shocked, Dark Knight? Stunned? You didn't expect this, did you? That is because you are no match for me, Edward Nigma, the Riddler and your intellectual superior. Did you think I would just forget our last meeting, Dark Knight? You HUMILIATED me. I know you will not beat me this time. It is utterly impossible. You cannot do it. I have won already. I will mock your attempts to solve my conundrums. I will stand triumphant over your bloodied corpse. And as the dim light fades for good in your tiny dullard's mind, your final thought will be how I have bested you. Come to the orphanage, detective. Or she dies.
~ The Riddler's citywide broadcast to Batman.
I am the smartest! I am the best! I AM THE RIDDLER!
~ The Riddler's own version of one of Batman's most iconic lines.
How exceedingly droll. I won't be needing a lawyer, you jumped-up security guard! I will represent myself!
~ The Riddler to Cash as Batman is taking him to the holding cell.
Do you even understand the numerous chemical processes that occur during combustion?
~ Speaking to Firefly.
How nice to see you, Dent. Still relying on that coin to make decisions rather than faultless logic and cognitive prowess?
~ Speaking to Two-Face.
Ah, Cobblepot, you vicious, inelegant, tacky bully. How is that Napoleon complex of yours?
~ To Penguin.
Please cease with these mindless inanities. It is beneath my brilliance to be cooped up with one so clearly insane.
~ To Professor Pyg.
You may be an expert in the art of killing things, Wilson, but you'll find I'm an expert at everything else.
~ To Deathstroke.
Oh, please don't proselytise to me. I have no need for the superstitious nonsense you peddle.
~ To Deacon Blackfire.
Your faith in mindless superstition is as misplaced as your desire to emulate Gotham's overrated defender, you outdated eleventh century anachronism.
~ To Azrael.

Game Over Lines[]

Arkham Origins[]

Ugh, and here I thought I'd finally met my intellectual equal... So much for that.
Brains always triumph over brawn, my friend! Always!

Arkham City[]

This is hardly a surprise. I always knew I was better than you.
Well, well. So the shaved monkey has failed. How utterly, utterly expected.
What's wrong? Has your primitive brain given up and accepted I, the Riddler, am better than you?
Riddle me this. What lies on the ground, is full of holes, and gives off a slight burning smell?
Question: what do you call someone who prevented a guard from turning to minced-meat? Answer: not you, Batman.
You picked wrong, Dark Knight!

Arkham Knight[]

I did it! I actually did it! I mean, of course I did. Good. As expected.
I don't think you'll be solving this one.
Riddle me this: What's dead? You!
My apologies, Catwoman. But you see, I had a point to prove.
~ If Catwoman is killed by her bomb collar.
Now to be fair, Catwoman, in cat years you had a very good run.
~ If Catwoman is killed by her bomb collar.
Your death was inevitable, I'm afraid. A statistical certainty.

Catwoman's Revenge[]

Farewell, my feline foe.
Revenge is a dish best served by an expert, consummate in its ideal preparation methods, my dear.

Trivia[]

  • The Riddler is one of only two villains to appear in all four titles and play an antagonistic role against Batman, the other being the Joker.
  • As one would expect, the closer the player gets to beating the Riddler, the angrier and more aggressive he gets. At first, he is a level headed taunter, but later, he is bursting into outraged tantrums. He even slightly breaks the fourth wall by accusing the player of looking the answers up on the Internet, though he may not necessarily be breaking the fourth wall in this occasions, as Google is stated to exist in the Arkhamverse in Batman: Assault on Arkham.
  • Surprisingly in Batman: Arkham Knight, one of Riddler's riddle clues say, "Joining your mission came with a cost, this empty reminder shows just what she lost," which is a reference to Barbara Gordon fighting alongside Batman as Batgirl, her career coming to an end after bring shot in the spine, paralyzing her. Scanning her batsuit solves the riddle. This could just be a puzzle by the developers themselves, or the Riddler was well aware of who Barbara was before she became paralyzed; however, it seems unlikely as he never mentions or references the event to the caped crusader.
  • In Batman: Arkham Knight, during the last Riddler challenge "Condamned", if you head in the wrong direction, Riddler will randomly ask Batman if he has to hover in front of the Batmobile waving a flag and telling him where to go. This could be a reference to the Nintendo series of kart racing games Mario Kart. In those games, if you head in the wrong direction, Lakitu hovers in front of you and holds up a sign telling you to turn around.
