Rieltar Anchev is a major villain in the first game of the Baldur's Gate series. He was the leader of the Baldur's Gate branch of The Iron Throne organization, and the adoptive father of Sarevok Anchev. A former sembian assassin and wizard, Rieltar was a corrupt businessman who planned with Sarevok the sabotage of the production of Iron in the Sword Coast and make the Iron Throne the most powerful merchant guild on the Coast, while being unaware of his adoptive son's true goals.
Personality[]
He was only concerned with his own wealth and the advancement of the Iron Throne, with absolutely no sense of morality other than he was always true to his word. That being said, Rieltar did revel in the manipulation of those who proved useful in one form or another, and still maintained a courteous, affably evil manner to others.
Rieltar had a complicated relationship with his adopted son Sarevok. He raised his son to be loyal and believed in that fealty until the last couple months before their falling. Sarevok however always held a deep hatred for Rieltar due to killing his adoptive mother when he was a child, and waited years for the right moment of eliminating Rieltar.
History[]
Rieltar started his career working for the Iron Throne as an assassin and smuggler in Sembia, before being promoted as the head of the Iron Throne's building in Baldur's Gate.
At some point he encountered Sarevok as a street urchin. He adopted the boy and raised him for some time with his wife to be his right-hand and enforcer. When Sarevok was still a child, Rieltar killed her with a garotte for her infidelity in front of him.
When the kingdom of Cormyr outlawed the Iron Throne's activities, Rieltar saw a great opportunity to gain more power in Western Faerun. With Sarevok's aid, he would sabotage the distribution of iron and frame the southern nation of Amn, creating hostilities.
Rieltar encountered some new complications however, when Sarevok began to escalate hostilities beyond the point they had previously sought. Sarevok actually did want to start a bloody war on the Sword Coast, as a means to gain the power of his true father, the dead god Bhaal.
Rieltar's plan would eventually be disrupted by Gorion's Ward when he and his companions liberated the Nashkel iron mines from Iron Throne's agent Mulahey and destroyed Rieltar's secret mines in Cloakwood.
In a effort to save what he has left, Rieltar travelled to Candlekeep to negotiate peace with Amn. Seeing this as a threat to his own plan of divine ascension, Sarevok manipulated Gorion's Ward into killing Rieltar. (or Sarevok himself will kill Rieltar offscreen and frame Gorion's Ward)
Sarevok would later take command of the Iron Throne and bankrupt the Baldur's Gate branch to finance his election to duke and the upcoming war with Amn but his incoronation is interrupted by Gorion's Ward who exposes Sarevok's crimes.
