The Ringleader is a major antagonist in the Junji Ito manga Gyo. Seeking to bring some levity to the growing devastation of Japan caused by the Death Stench, the Ringleader brought the Citrous Circus into town, but, possibly maddened by what he saw, began finding new and unconventional ways to incorporate the disease's gas into his acts. Though he was guilty of kidnapping Kaori after she had escaped from Professor Koyanagi's lab, he is by far the lesser of three evils when compared to the Death Stench and Koyanagi, even commanding an attempt to bring down the latter during the manga's finale.
Biography[]
The leader of the Citrous Circus, the Ringleader discovered the Death Stench's true nature at some point after setting up shop in the already-devastated city of Tokyo, which had largely fallen to the Death Stench pandemic during the time when main protagonist Tadashi was unconscious. Though it is unclear as to whether he was maddened or enlightened by what he learned, it is apparent that like Tadashi, he is immune to the disease through unspecified means, and found new ways to implement the walking machines and gas produced by the bacteria into his circus's acts. After Kaori, having been fitted to a custom walking machine by Professor Koyanagi, broke free from the latter's lab, the Ringleader and the other members of the Citrous Circus found her and tried to make her perform as one of the acts.
Tadashi later found his way to the Citrous Circus's big tent while searching for Kaori, where he met the Ringleader and learned from him about the Death Stench's secrets, though he was shocked to discover the gas's soul-like appearance when it was lit, revealing that the bacteria was at least partly powered by the souls of those who had died in the Pacific Theater of World War II. As an apology for scaring him, the Ringleader brought out Kaori, but she refused to obey their commands and lashed out to break free, with Tadashi in hot pursuit.
Much later, after Kaori had been separated from Tadashi and killed by a horde of Walking Machines, an unseen Ringleader sent the Citrous Circus's cannon to shoot down Professor Koyanagi's custom flying walking machine, using the body of an infected human as ammunition. Though the cannon was successful in destroying the walking machine's air balloon, it quickly deployed wings and flew away.
