The Ringleader is the main antagonist of the short story created by Junji Ito, The Circus is Here, one of the stories that were complied in Ito Junji Kyoufu Manga Collection. During the first minutes of his appearance, the ringleader is essentially a seemingly unassuming ringmaster of the circus troupe known as the "Papyrus Circus". However, as the manga progresses, the ringleader himself is revealed to be the Death God--or better known as Shinigami--that preys on several human souls, specifically preying on male population which is his favorite. To that end, he also uses one of his stars, Leiliya, to get what he wants, uncaring if she was suffering mentally or not.
Biography[]
The story started with the decoy protagonist or the audience surrogate of the manga, Yoshiyuki, and his little sister, Hinako, attempted to see a circus that was performing near the ancient shrine. After Yoshiyuki manages to enter the circus on his own and meeting with his friend, Koji, who became one of the watchers of the circus performance, Hinako was unable to enter the place. In another scene, the Ringmaster then introduces himself to the audience and have his clowns to perform the opening act, a ball balancing act. However, during the performance, one clown ended up falling to his demise despite it was an accident. As a result, the ringmaster orders his clowns to get rid of his body. After the opening act is over, he then announce another performer towards his audience, Leiliya, who is revealed to be the girl that Yoshiyuki met earlier as Leiliya then performed a tight-rope walking performance. In the end, she manages to succeed on doing so.
After the performance by Leiliya, the story then continues with three guys trying to do the stacked tight rope walking performance. Much like the previous clown performer, they ended up falling for their deaths with the ringmaster sadistically quips a joke about it in a form of apathy. This causes Leiliya to break down crying after seeing what happened. Meanwhile, as Hiroko attempts to sneak into the back of the circus so that she could see what happened, she then saw the dead bodies of the performers including the clown and the three people that performed the Stacked Tight-Rope performance much to her shock. After seeing what happened, one of the circus performers, Jo, and his assistant began to chat about how Jo will earn Leiliya's heart as long as he could pull a great performance that would make him a star of the circus. As they tried to do their own show towards the audience by throwing knives, Jo was seemingly doing his own thing perfectly. However, after being provoked by the Ringmaster, he ended up losing focus and then accidentally kills his own assistant. Still trying to impress Leiliya, Jo then tried to perform a dangerous stunt on his own but in the end, he was killed.
