River Song (born as Melody Pond) is a major character in the Whoniverse.

She is the daughter of Amy Pond and Rory Williams, and the wife and occasional companion of The Doctor. River Song notably encounters the Doctor out of sequence, thus meaning for most of their time together, one knows more about the other, and vice versa.

When she was a baby River (then known as Melody) was taken from her parents by the Silence so they could use her as a weapon to kill the Doctor. Due to being a "Child of the Tardis" Melody had the Time Lords ability to regenerate but as River Song she gave the remaining regenerations to revive the Doctor.

She is played by Alex Kingston.

Biography[]

Melody Pond is the child of Amy Pond and Rory Williams conceived within the time vortex on their wedding night. This meant that even though she is biologically human, she has Time Lord traits ("A Good Man Goes to War"). She was taken from her mother at birth by Madame Kovarian and The Silence in order to be raised as a human weapon to assassinate the Doctor to prevent him from repeating his name and releasing the Time Lords from the time war. Melody travelled through time and, under the allias "Mels", grew up alongside her younger parents as their childhood friend. When the Doctor arrived just after the point where she had been born, she coerced him at gunpoint into travelling back through time to kill Hitler ("Let's Kill Hitler"). While there, she revealed her identity as Melody Pond, regenerated into River Song after a gunshot from Hitler, and attempted (to no avail) to assassinate the Doctor. While she poisoned him during this encounter, she then redemptively gave him some of her regeneration energy in order to save his life.

After this point, the two became allies, although due to their moving in opposite direction through time, one always knew more about the other, which strained their relationship. Eventually, the two became lovers, although they were forced apart when Koravian kidnapped her once again for the purpose of killing the Doctor. This resulted in the death of the Doctor and the destruction of the known universe, freezing it in a single point in time. During the resulting chaos, the two managed to return time to normal, marrying in the process and solidifying their relationship.

When the Doctor next encounters River, ("The Husbands of River Song") she does not initially recognise him (as she hasn't met his new incarnation) and he is able to learn more about what she is like when he is not around. The Doctor accompanies River, as they face down her other husband King Hydroflax, and River discovers his identity after confessing her love for him and declaring that she believes he doesn't love her back. The two then spend their last night together on the planet Darillium, although the Doctor reveals that a night on Darillum lasts 24 earth years.

The two meet for the final time in the Libary ("Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead"), which is actually the Doctor's first meeting with her. They battle the Vashta Nerada, and River sacrifices herself in order to save the entire "population" of the Library (by saving them onto the Library's computer). However, the Doctor manages to save her consciousness by saving it in the Library's computer.
