Rivermind Technologies are the main antagonists in the season 7 episode "Common People" of the dystopian drama Black Mirror.
Biography[]
After elementary school teacher Amanda collapses at work, her husband, Mike, learns that she has a brain injury and cannot be treated on standard medical procedures. When Mike begs for alternative solutions, he learns of a trial with Rivermind that might be able to reverse the effects of her injury. Suspicious of the cost of the service, Mike meets with Gaynor, who tells him of her previous injury and her ability to overcome it. She reveals to Mike that the cost is a barely-affordable $300/month, which he agrees to sign up to.
With the treatment successful, Amanda returns to her normal self. However, things become alarming when Amanda begins to randomly recite advertisements whilst speaking, without being aware she has done so. When Mike and Amanda return to Gaynor about this, she informs them that Rivermind has introduced advertising to its standard packages after introducing "Rivermind Plus", an ad-free treatment service at a higher cost.
Frustrated, but willing to cope with the interruptions, Amanda begins to face repercussions at work after advertising a Christian advice service to children and over-50s lifestyle companies to staff. Realising that if Amanda lost her job they would be unable to pay for their standard package, Mike and Amanda agree to pay for the premium service. To finance this, Mike secretly begins taking depraved orders from strangers online for money on the website "Dum Dummies".
When Mike's account is discovered by a colleague, he attacks them which results in a severe injury after being ran over by a heavy vehicle. Mike loses his job, and pleas to Gaynor to allow them a relief period whilst Mike searches for a new job. Gaynor tells them she cannot do so, and that the standard feature is no longer available. When Mike tries to reason with her that they are trying for a baby, Gaynor informs them that pregnancy incurs a premium due to the stress this can have on the body. Realising they are being duped, the pair leave and abandon the service. Gaynor, shaken by the tense encounter, turns up her nonchalance on her Rivermind Lux app.
