Rize Kamishiro (in Japanese: 神代 利世, Kamishiro Rize) is a major antagonist of the dark fantasy manga and anime series Tokyo Ghoul. She is a very well-known ghoul, infamous for having eating habits which would threaten even other ghouls in the various wards of Tokyo.
On one occasion, she set her eyes on Ken Kaneki and tried to eat him after tricking him into going on a date. In the midst of the incident, she was crushed by steel beams and seemingly killed. Her kagune was then donated to Kaneki in the resulting aftermath, transforming him into the first Artificial Ghoul.
It was revealed later on in the series that she was still alive and had been captured and harvested by Professor Kanou, who transplanted her organs into Kaneki, alongside a number of other subjects. Her presence appears inside of Ken Kaneki's mind to continue on tormenting him psychologically.
In the Japanese version, she was voiced by Kana Hanazawa (who later voiced Seryu Ubiquitous) in her very first villainous portrayal in her career. In the English version, she was voiced by Monica Rial.
Appearance[]
Rize appears as a young and beautiful woman with long purple hair, purple eyes, and glasses. She appears as a shy and slender woman and wears typical attire to that of an average human female in an effort to blend into human society. She often reveals some cleavage so that she can seducemale prey in order to kill and eat them.
After transforming into Dragon, Rize has long white hair and a pale face with decorative marks across her forehead and close to her eyelids.
Personality[]
Rize is regarded as a femme fatale, even among ghouls. Known as the "binge eater," she eats a large amount of humans, even more than what most ghouls view as necessary. She lures her prey by showing a gentle and shy facade, before revealing her true intentions when they let their guard down.
Rize tends to lack ambition, acting primarily out of hunger and boredom. She is extremely selfish, having very little regard for the ghouls' struggle to live among humanity due to her ravenous appetite increasingly jeopardizing the very existence of all ghouls. Extremely narcissistic, sadistic, manipulative, and bloodthirsty, Rize was an extremely capable ghoul, and a hunted criminal before her apparent "death."
While appearing in Kaneki's hallucinations, Rize acted much more composed, persuasive, and callous. She often taunted Kaneki in times of hardship, such as when he was imprisoned, his starving state due to his refusal to eat humans, as well as his rampage as the Dragon (when she appeared in his mind once again in Toyko Ghoul:re). All she wanted was to force him to succumb to his inner darkness. In the first season of anime series, she even urged Kaneki to consume Hide, his best friend, when the latter was severely injured. This hallucination of Rize represented Kaneki's darker self, showing how much of an impact she had on him.

Rize was one of the many illegitimate children of Tsuneyoshi Washuu. Her father intended to use her as a "womb" in order to preserve the Washuu bloodline.
She and her half brother, Souta Washuu-Furuta, grew up in Sunlit Garden, a facility which bred and raised half-human children to become talented Ghoul Investigators. With the help of Souta, Rize managed to escape the facility, but was left exhausted and hungry. From there, she was taken in by fellow ghoul Matasaka Kamishiro (aka Shachi).
Over the years, Rize grew up to view Shachi as a surrogate father. Yet, as she grew, so did her appetite. Rize began binge eating, and continued even after Shachi protested against it. Her actions would eventually lead to the C.C.G. raiding the 6th Ward and Shachi getting captured.
Without a guardian, Rize started to live nomadically and went from ward to ward while continuing her eating habits. Six months prior to the series, she lived in the 11th ward. While there, she ravaged the ward with her eating habits and eventually caught the CCG's attention once more. She fled the area, but not before she killed two other ghouls and Hagi, the 11th Ward's Leader.
Prologue[]
At the beginning of the series, Rize was first seen in an aquarium trampling over the corpses of all her recent victims. As she devoured her prey, she was approached by Yakumo Oomori, an infamous ghoul and executive of the illusive organization known as the Aogiri Tree. She began to trash talk Yamori, provoking him to charge towards her and attack. Rize, however, swiftly dodged his attack and stole his tools. Rize escaped to the roof, stating she would not "play" with him, before running off into the night.
The next morning, she visited Anteiku as a customer and set her sights on Ken Kaneki. Upon meeting him and earning his trust due to their shared love of books, the two agreed to a date. After their day out, she asked Kaneki to escort her back home, to which he readily agreed. However, she then led him into a back alleyway and revealed her ghoul nature by taking a bite out of Kaneki's shoulder.
She continued to ravage and mutilate Kaneki. Yet, before she could finish him off, several steel beams fell off a nearby tower and crushed her. Though it appeared to have been an accident, it was later revealed to have been caused by Souta. After the incident, she was captured by Doctor Kanou and harvested for her organs to create Artificial One-Eyed Ghouls, with Kaneki serving as the first victim to this experimentation.
Dove's Emergence and Gourmet Arc[]
Rize does not actually appear in either of these story arcs, but she does shape some events. Since Kaneki is refusing to conform towards his ghoul side, Rize is starving inside of him - and there are instances where she completely takes over Kaneki and causes him to go berserk.
Aogiri Arc[]
After Kaneki was captured and tortured by Yamori, Rize appeared in his mind during a small break in between the tortures. She taunts Kaneki by showing him some of his memories and, soon, she convinces him to embrace his ghoul side as Kaneki breaks loose and brutally mutilates Yamori.
Post-Aogiri[]
During the 11th Ward Battle, Kaneki discovered that Kanou was using Rize to create new Artificial One-Eyed Ghouls by using her organs to turn humans into ghouls. He began to investigate and eventually discovered Rize was still alive in Kanou's laboratory. Renji would later rescue her during the raid. Later, Kaneki visited Renji's home one day to find out where Rize was when he found her in a container. After some thinking, Kaneki decided to use his kagune to break open the container, allowing her to come out. When she was freed, she started to yell out for her adoptive father and beg for food.
Post-Tsukiyama Operation[]
Two years later, Rize was seen alive and well in the process of recovery during Eto's public announcement of her status as a ghoul. It is unknown if Rize ever encountered Ken Kaneki again.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Rinkaku Kagune: Rize's rinkaku kagune is very special, as it is abnormally powerful (even by rinkaku users' standards) and can regenerate faster than other kagunes. She can spring up four tentacles and use them to take down multiple opponents in one strike without much effort.
- Regeneration: Rize has the ability to quickly regenerate at a fast and alarming rate.
- Unusual Strength: Rize is infamous for her unusual and immense power, which is considered to be very challenging even by the strongest of ghouls. She can win a fight without even trying, and she can regenerate faster than regular ghouls. She's also very quick and can evade attacks very easily.
Trivia[]
- Rize's voice actress, Kana Hanazawa (who was known for voicing young girls and cute children before Tokyo Ghoul was aired) earned universal acclaim among her fans for her portrays of Rize, due to the character being much darker than any other characters Kana Hanazawa voiced before. Her English counterpart Monical Rial was praised just as well.
- In the anime, Rize shows up to Kaneki several times as a hallucination whenever he is hungry or struggling against his ghoul instincts. In the manga, the hallucination of Rize does not come to Kaneki until he has been tortured and his mental defenses are at their lowest.
