The nameless Roach Scientists are supporting antagonists in Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling, serving as the main antagonists of the sidequest "Leif's Request". Despite being long dead before the game's events, they were behind the horrible experimentations in Upper Snakemouth and Leif's troubled backstory.
Biography[]
In Upper Snakemouth, a group of sentient cockroaches began research to find another method of achieving immortality as the mythical Everlasting Sapling was nearly impossible to find. They decided to use science as the answer and constructed a laboratory powered by crystals. With two unnamed roaches in charge of the operation, the scientists kidnapped numerous bugs across Bugaria and forcefully exposed them with cordyceps. Numerous bugs from multiple kingdoms were kidnapped and exposed to the cordyceps fungi, including ants, beetles, bees, and a moth, all of which were turned into mindless zombies. Out of their test subjects, the scientists favored moths due to their bodies being resilient to magic, allowing them to harness it in battle.
Despite the experimentations being successful, the scientists grew hungry for more, and sought to become stronger than gods. They ignored their collogues' pleas to stop and created two unique specimens of cordyceps; one that harnessed ice magic and the other harnessed blight magic. During its development, the ice magic cordyceps grew sentient, to which the scientists deemed it a failure and trashed it. The sentient batch of cordyceps would find the corpse of Leif and resurrected him.
As for the blight magic cordyceps, the scientists exposed it to another moth to create a supersoldier. The moth mutated into a large monster called Zommoth, and was given the task to guard the facility. However, Zommoth grew too strong and trashed the facility, killing the scientists.
In the present day, Team Snakemouth discovers the remnants of the lab by using the Peculiar Gem on an ancient door within the Snakemouth Den. Inside the lab, the zombified victims of the scientists haunt the halls of their horrific experimentation. At the end of the lab, they encounter Zommoth, with Leif trying to reason with his "sibling". After killing it, a holographic projector showed the scientists with the cordyceps that would become Leif, making him experience an emotional breakdown. Fortunately, Vi and Kabbu comfort Lief, claiming that even if he is a Zommoth prototype or not, he will always be their friend.
Trivia[]
- One secret room in Upper Snakemouth shows monitors displaying Venus and two other flowers called Mars and Pluto. It is possible they were creations of the scientists.
