Patchett

Robert "Bob" Patchett

Robert "Bob" Patchett is the main antagonist in the 1989 film She-Devil.

He was portrayed by Ed Begley Jr.

Overall[]

We first see Robert and his wife, Ruth, the main protagonist of the film, making preparations for a party. At the party, things go well for both of them until Ruth spills a glass of wine on the famous romance novelist Mary Fisher by accident. While Ruth is trying to get something to clean the mess, Mary and Bob become fixated with each other.

He drives both women home, dropping off Ruth then taking a long trip to Mary's residence, which as Ruth later describes "a pink palace by the sea". Mary and Bob commit adultery, but cracks are already forming in that a boy toy named Garcia, who is nominally Mary's butler, is angered she has taken a paramour and works to get rid of Bob. Bob returns home the next morning, lying that the car broke down and he had to spend the night at a motor court.

When he says he signed Mary Fisher as a client, Ruth angrily deduces what happened, but makes no mention when his two kids ask if they are millionaires now. Bob laughs and says "No, but we are getting there!" Time goes by and Bob becomes a kept man by Mary, while Ruth continues to tend hearth and home, thinking he will tire of the fling.  Things come to a boil when Ruth embarrasses Bob when his parents visit. After an unexplained mishap where Andy's pet gerbil is found in the casserole.

Ruth snaps that Mary Fisher should have cooked dinner, and reveals to the children and Bob's parents that he is guilty of adultery with her. Bob's father wonders why Bob married Ruth to begin with, to which Bob replies he did so on the demands of his father, as years earlier Bob had got Ruth pregnant in an act of fornication (presumably leading to Nicolette's birth), to which Bob's mother replies "Well, marriage is never easy". Bob's parents then leave to go out to eat, taking the grandkids with them.

Bob feels he has the "ammunition" to get rid of Ruth, and announces his plans to separate from her. He says he has four assets, 1.) Home. 2.) Family 3.) Career. 4.) Freedom. His sole liability is Ruth, whom he calls the eponymous "She-Devil" due to her looks and attitude. This causes Ruth to run outdoors screaming to God, and vows to ruin Bob. She begins by writing down a list titled "Bob's assets", and works on destroying them one by one.  Ruth begins with the first asset: Home.

She overloads all the appliances and does risky activities such as putting household cleaners in the microwave. The house explodes just as she is taking the family dog Fuzzy for a walk. Prior to destroying the house, she salvaged two items, a family picture and Bob's client file on Mary Fisher. Surprisingly, Ruth is not suspected of arson, as neighbors felt that one of those foundation homes were often unstable. When Nicolette and Andy come home from school, they are shocked to see their house in ruins.

Ruth hires a taxi, where she and the kids ride to Mary Fisher's mansion. They are met at the door by Garcia, who gladly admits them when Ruth identifies herself as Bob's wife. Bob was in the middle of skinny dipping with Mary. Mary is shocked at seeing children in her home, as is Nicolette, who is appalled at seeing her father with another woman. Ruth bluntly tells Bob the house is gone and they can call their insurance agent for proof, and says that Andy and Nicolette now have a new home,

When Bob asks where Ruth is going, she returns to the taxi and nonchalantly says "Into my future, I guess". She is next seen at a diner in the city. While eating, she scratches "Home" off the list and targets the second asset: Family. Perusing the file, she sees Mary Fisher has been paying for her mother to be holed away in the Golden Twilight Nursing Home. She seeks a job there, but realizes she needs a false name. A peddler selling roses inspires her new name: Vesta Rose.

He begins an affair with Olivia but he fires her after she begin to have feelings for him which tells Olivia that she was just a fling to Bob not a girlfriend like Mary, Mary finds out about the flings at his office through Ruth by a fan letter she sent her, making things even worse for Mary than it already was, since Bob came into her life? things started to go wrong for Mary as well, Ruth (in disguise) gets Mary's mother thrown out of the nursing home she put her in and Mrs. Fisher tells all of Mary's secrets to a reporter on People Magazine, Bob's son accidently kills her dog and.

Mary's latest romance novel was a disappointment to not only critics and her publisher but her fans as well, so to cheer her up she and Bob throw a party, but things were about to get bad for Bob as well, because Olivia and Ruth sought their revenge on Bob for hurting them both. Bob is arrested for embezzlement and during a meeting with his lawyer? the lawyer accidently tells Mary that she was 1 of the clients Bob stole money from and because of this? she fires him and breaks up with him.

Bob's day in court comes but instead of seeing the judge his lawyer hired to acquit him? he sees a judge who is not a corrupt one and the judge sentenced him to a year to 8 months in federal prison for his crimes against Mary and the other clients who he cheated, Ruth and the kids visit him in the conclusion of the film never knowing that his imprisonment as well as the end of his relationship with Mary plus the loss of his career & home is because of Ruth.
