Y'all need to start appreciating your grandaddy! I went and spent your inheritance on this beautiful house in this neighborhood! And all I ask you to do is act like you got some class...
~ Robert Freeman's first irresponsible act.

Robert Jebediah "Granddad" Freeman is the deuteragonist of the animated series and comic strip The Boondocks.

He is the parental grandfather of Huey and Riley Freeman, becoming their legal guardian sometime after the unknown death of their parents. He currently lives with his grandsons in the suburban city of Woodcrest.

In comparison to his oldest grandson, Huey Freeman, Robert is often seen as irresponsible and often misinformed about everything regarding politics and related topics. His status varies from episode to episode, often being chivalrous, but Robert is the main reason him and his two grandchildren, as well as those around them are dragged into dangerous situations, making him more antagonistic.

He was voiced by the late John Witherspoon.

Personality[]

Differing from Huey, Robert can be described as an irresponsible, if not childish, his first noticeable act was spending his grandsons' entire inheritance to move to a big suburban house he couldn't afford. Since then, he has committed multiple acts against that has put himself, his friends, and family in danger, all without learning his lesson in the end. Famously, he often gets in involved with beautiful women in their twenties (sometimes older women), spending more money at extensive places or items he can't afford for the sole purpose of having sex. If the situation is serious enough, it often ends in them attempting to kill him, kidnap his grandchild (once Riley), take his money, or gets him involved in an illegal crime. Huey has once openly pointed out that Robert never takes responsibility for his actions or learn a lesson from them.

A known compulsive liar, Robert has lied on numerous occasions most of the time to ensure that he's looked upon as being a better man compared to much younger or famous ones. In this, he's often viewed as being a civil rights' legend, in fact, he's met or being around such people, Robert himself hasn't been involved in their heroic actions. Ironically enough, though Robert denies that he's descendant of Tobias Lynchwater, his actions better reflects Tobias', as he's lied to make himself look like the hero.

Despite his villainous role, Robert has had rare moments of him both a chivalrous person and hero. He doesn't believe in hitting women or just standing around as one is about to be hit. In his youth, he stood up to a group of racist white men who tried hitting an African American woman despite not wanting to be there to begin with. As a military pilot, he did fight for the right reasons and once flew a secret mission to save the world.

However, for whatever reason, later in life and in the series, Robert turned into someone who'll live his life as free as possible, even if it means others often get hurt in the process. It is further shown, as in his current situation, he took the watch of his former girlfriend, who was in the hospital after surgery.

History[]

Not much is known about Robert's parents or childhood, aside from the fact he is Cookie Freeman's older brother. In World War II, he fought as a military pilot, alongside his friend, Moe Jackson as his wingman. Robert was involved in the United States civil rights movement, where he encountered people, such as Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Malcon X, though he never achieved as much as either of them, let alone having an actual active role in it.

Amid this, he became involved in the Freedom Riders, albeit on accident as Robert got on the wrong bus during the Jim Crow era. However, this point, he was almost held against his will and forced to act alongside them. In this, Robert fought against several white men in the defense of Diane Nash, one of the Freedom Riders, and forced into a near-death moment alongside her, and Reverend Sturdy Harris, where the group spent time in jail together.

At some point, Robert married and had a son, who at some point married a nameless woman who gave birth to his two grandsons, Huey and Riley Freeman. Unfortunately, the two died due to some unforeseen circumstances, in which left them in the care of their grandfather. At some point, Robert used their inheritance to purchase a house in Woodcrest, Maryland, soon leading to a much of unforeseen events.

Powers and Abilities[]

As an old man, Robert doesn't have much strength and training compared to that of his oldest grandson, Huey, more so since his advanced age made him weaker than his prime. However, he's more skilled than a normal old man, more so because of his training as a pilot in the military; beforehand, he fought against a collection of white men ganging up on him. Robert's main weapon is his belt and cane, the former is something that he's proven the most efficient in his youth and as an old man.

Villianous Acts[]

Intentional or not, Robert Freeman has caused numerous villainous and/or irresponsible acts, which ruined has the lives of those around him.

  • Used all Huey's and Riley's inheritance (ruining their potential future) to purchase a house in Woodcrest, one he couldn't afford, let alone continue to paying the bills that came with it. (Season 1, Episode 1)
  • Ended up killing Colonel H. Stinkmeaner during their fight. While this was purely by accident and something Stinkmeaner deserved for how vile he is, this would lead to problems that would haunt the Freemans later on in the series. (Season 1, Episode 4)
  • Spread soul food through a whole community, resulting in that particular neighborhood falling apart into a more destitute area, with people being addicted to it. Despite Huey's warnings about doing so, he still follows through with it all because he became popular. (Season 1, Episode 10)
  • Snuck into a movie theater to watch Soul Plane 2, forcing the kids to do it with him and lying to Jasmine that he bought the tickets online. (Season 2, Episode 1)
  • Lied to numerous people and the news about Riley being a respectful and innocent kid in an attempt to get money from the school, threatening to get a teacher fired. (Season 2, Episode 11)
  • Socially dismissed Huey as his grandson in an attempt to get VIP tickets to the inauguration of Barack Obama. (Season 3, Episode 1)
  • Ignored Huey's advice during a "flu pandemic", being irresponsible in letting numerous people in their house for his benefit, despite the fact that it endangered them. (Season 3, Episode 13)
  • Sold his and thus his grandsons' freedom away to Ed Wuncler II, after being irresponsible in handling their funds and numerous factors without hesitating. (Season 4, Episode 2)
  • Spread an explosive hair product that would have killed a large number of women if it caught on fire, not caring about this as long as he put a simple warning on the product. Even dealt with a gangster businesswoman and her henchman, both of whom almost killed them. (Season 4, Episode 3)

Trivia[]
