Teach, who would go on to become a notorious pirate in his own right and one of the Four Emperors.
Unbeknownst to many, he was a member of the Davy Clan, with his true name being Davy D. Xebec, being is a descendant of the legendary pirate known as Davy D. Jones. He was also the arch-nemesis of the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, who would go on to a level of infamy similar to his. His death served as the beginning for many things, including Monkey D. Garp's famous reputation as the hero of the Marines.
In Japanese, he is voiced by Shinshū Fuji. In English, he has been voiced by Paul St. Peter (Who also voiced Wamuu in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Battle Tendency).
Personality[]
| “ | He was never called by any name other than Captain Rocks, but his full name was Rocks D. Xebec. And while he is no longer of this world, he was one of the pirates that one sees from time to time carrying the name of D. | „ |
| ~ Sengoku explaining Rocks' infamy to the younger generation of Marine soldiers. |
Rocks was a fearless, violent and sadistic pirate who loved creating havoc. Rocks had no mercy to even children as he brutally defeated Loki with his sword when he was a child. He was highly ambitious, as his dream was to become the King of the World and did not shy away from doing anything possible to achieve these ends, at one point even meeting and directly threatening the current king of the world Imu. To this end he was intrigued by forbidden topics of the world, being compared to a terrorist in such regard.
However, despite these traits Rocks held genuine respect for those he deemed strong as he took an immediate liking to Elbaph's king, Harald, and aided in his escape from Mary Geoise. He even referred to him as his friend and angrily kicked Kaido in the face for trying to force him to join his crew with oppression. Even years after meeting Harald, he made multiple requests for the king to aid him in his quest to become king of the world. Despite the dissolution of their friendship with a battle, Rocks trusted Harald with the secrets of his name and his family even while knowing he was revealing a weakness.
Rocks was also very lecherous and swayed by beautiful women, being immediately swooned by the beautiful Shakky. Indeed, in contrast to his confrontational behavior and changed his tone to friendly and allowed her to stay on Hachinosu and offered a helping hand. However, he later gave up his affections for her when he met Eris, who would give birth to his child, something he was embarrassed to share with.
For all of his ruthlessness and ambition to rule the world, Rocks has shown to have a deep attachment for his family, prioritizing their safety first and foremost. Due to their clan being near extinct, Rocks took the measures of relocating his family to God Valley, as the island acted as a haven for the Davy Clan. When he learned of the Native Hunting Competition on God Valley, Rocks immediately rushed to save his family from the threat in question, while disguising his intent as him wanting to rescue Shakky from her captors. He was horrified to see his extended family being possessed and reluctantly cut them down to protect his wife and son, while avenging their fate by defeating Figarland Garling.
Rocks shares the same kind of charisma as those that carry the Will of D., being able to rally several powerful individuals together, despite not having their full loyalty. He even has a tendency to behave recklessly by rushing into battle. He also shares their hatred of Celestial Dragons and the World Government but to a greater extent, as he was not terrified to hold Imu at gunpoint or kill Celestial Dragons to save his family. Another thing he shares with them is his lack of fear at death, he fully acknowledged and correctly deduced that his journey to God Valley was a suicide mission but was ready to accept it if it meant to protect his family.
Being a descendant of Davy D. Jones, he takes pride in his lineage, claiming himself to be his worshipper. Because of this, Rocks enjoyed partaking in the Davy Back Fights as part of the pirate tradition, using it both as a form of thrilling excitement, as well as recruiting powerful criminals and pirates in his crew. When transformed into a demon by Imu and forced to attack his crewmates and family, Rocks was driven to deep anguish, tearfully begging Roger and Garp to kill him and end his suffering.
Biography[]
Past[]
Rocks was a descendant of Davy D. Jones and was born in God Valley in the West Blue. He left the island to pursue his pirate career, but being aware of the persecution of his near extinct clan, he changed his name from Davy D. Xebec to Rocks D. Xebec.
Rocks D. Xebec meets Imu and Gunko in the Room of Flowers.
56 years ago, Rocks kidnapped 5 kings at the Levely and Rocks later went on a violent rampage that resulted in him killing a Marine Admiral. During his escape, he encountered Imu and Gunko in the room of flowers deep within Pangaea Castle, swearing to return one day. He was then pursued by the guards but was confronted by Harald and they clashed.
After forming a mutual respect, he directed Harald to a way to escape custody though he was shocked to see him jump off the Red Line. Rocks then made his own departure but earned a bounty during which he hijacked a ship carrying a load of the heavenly tribute and destroyed one of the Gates of Justice in the progress.
Rocks competing in the Davy Back Fight.
48 years ago, before becoming a pirate captain, Rocks participated in countless Davy Back Fights and was able to gather a group of six consisting of Shiki, Buckingham Stussy, Edward Newgate, Wang Zhi, Don Marlon, and Ganzui, as they traveled to Elbaph to meet with Harald though the four encountered the child prince Loki. Rocks demanded to know where Harald was, stating he was not the type to be turned away.
Loki confirmed to them that they were indeed on Elbaph and surprised Rocks by revealing that he was the son of Harald. Rocks decided to seize advantage by instructing Loki to say he was hurt to get him to return. After being met by resistance from Loki, Rocks brutally attacked the boy when he attempted to strike at him and ordered him to call Harald back to Elbaph.
Sometime after, Rocks met with Harald with the rest of his crew and asked Harald to join him in his conquest of taking over pirate island and one day overthrowing the world government though he was rejected and eventually left. At another point in his visit, Loki grew to admire Rocks, and he requested to become a part of his group, but Rocks refused him and when the boy challenged him, he brutalized him without mercy.
Rocks officially forming his crew.
Four years after this incident, Rocks officially formed his pirate crew dubbing it the Rocks Pirates by rallying the group at Hachinosu Island, promising them great fortune and infamy. Along with his initial crew members, he later recruited other criminals such as Charlotte Linlin, Kaido, John, Barbell and Streusen, while others such as Kyo, Gill Bastar and Gloriosa would join at a later point. However, there was no camaraderie among them as they would constantly argue and attempt to kill each other while at sea. Regardless, they stood together because of a goal in obtaining wealth.
Rocks was feared for his violence and for the power of his crew. He was very interested in studying history, especially subject matters that were taboo to the World Government. Rocks desired to be King of the World and was indiscriminate of who he attacked whether they be Marines, fellow Pirates, and Celestial Dragons. At some point, Shakky retired from piracy and arrived on the island to open a bar. Her beauty swayed Rocks and he allowed her to stay on Hachinosu and offered a helping hand.
40 years ago, he lost interest in Shakky and got together with a woman named Eris. The two had a son together named Teach. Rocks then took the measures of relocating his family to his homeland, God Valley, as the island acted as a haven for the Davy Clan far away from the World Government. While over the moon at being a father, Rocks was teased by Linlin, Shakky, and Gloriosa on his joy. Soon the Roger Pirates burst in, Rocks and Roger argued before it was broken up by Shakky who forbade fighting in her bar. On the seas, their crews would clash with the Rocks Pirates being seen as their first real rivals.
39 years ago, Rocks and Harald clash when the latter attempted to kill him to have Elbaph become part of the World Government. The battle ended in a draw but it severed the friendship between them and Rocks swore to never recruit Harald again.
Rocks' final meeting with Harald.
38 years ago, Rocks' worst fear were recognized when the crew received word of Shakky, Hachinosu's greatest treasure being stolen by Celestial Dragons, as well as the Native Hunting Competition held on God Valley. Rocks then gathered his crew and set sail for a supposed rescue mission. Along the way, the crew were intercepted by Harald and his crew but Rocks requested a private talk just between them. He revealed to Harald the secrets of his true name and his family were in danger at God Valley, his homeland.
He told Harald that the World Government are likely unaware of this and are holding their fun, not expecting him. Rocks tells Harald that he is using the excuse to save Shakky or procure powerful devil fruits as a way to go save his family, ready for death should this be his final stance. He asked Harald to join him but the latter refused and they fought but Harald intentionally loss so Rocks could save his family.
The Rocks Pirates continued with their journey and invaded God Valley. Rocks went ahead of his crew by going off to attack and kill many Celestial Dragons as well as personally fighting off the Knights of God namely Figarland Garling to save his family. After successfully recovering Teach and his wife Eris, Rocks was forced to slay his father and grandmother after they were transformed into Demons. Despite members of his crew growing annoyed by his reckless nature, since they had an agenda, Newgate and Kaido stood with Rocks as he prepared to face off Imu, who has taken possession of Saturn's form. Rocks proceeded to insult Imu as the king of bilge rats, prompting the monarch to accuse Rocks of being Davy Jones himself. While denying this Rocks alluded to a promise Jones made that he wished to fulfill prompting them to engage in battle.
Rocks leading the attack on Imu.
With the arrival of Linlin, Garp, and Roger, the six proceeded to launch a full scale attack on Imu. However, Imu regenerated and took notice of Rocks wife and son attempting to leave the island deciding to have them killed. In retaliation, Rocks tried cutting Imu to pieces to no avail as Imu revealed they would make Rocks kill his own family in their stead. Confused and entrapped in their tendrils, Rocks is subsequently transformed into a demon by the Domi Reversi power held by Imu and given the order to kill his own wife and son.
While maintaining his consciousness for a brief moment, Rocks taunts Imu by mentioning Davy Jones, how he was the original king of the world. Having caused Imu to be enraged, Rocks then asks him who it is they're more afraid of, Joy Boy or Davy Jones. Unfortunately, Imu manages to fully convert Rocks into a demon when they reveal their plans of subjugating Harald and the Elbaph giants under their control, causing Rocks to be enraged.
Rocks confronts Roger and Garp.
Having been fully transformed, Imu gives him the order to kill his family and anyone that tries to stop him. He manages to take out both Kaido and Linlin effortlessly before briefly clashing with Newgate, causing a mountain on the island to collapse down on many people. Rocks then turned his attention to his family, chasing after them with the unfortunate intent of killing them, but they are saved by Kuma's newfound powers, who then transports himself away. Their subsequent clash was powerful enough to destroy one of God Valley's iconic mountains.
Believing they had been killed by the Marine cannon fire, Imu decides to have Rocks kill the remaining people on God Valley, which leads to him confronting Rogers and Garp ahead. For a brief moment, Rocks is able to speak with both of them through the Voice of All Things, begging them to kill him before proceeding to lung forward at them. Hardening his blade with Armament and Conquerors haki, the demon turned Rocks struck at Roger first before being punched away by Garp before blowing them away with a powerful sword swing. As the sky split, Rocks thrusted his blade at Garp before being attacked from behind by Roger, sending him crashing into rubble. Garp then threw him away and attempted to attack him with Roger, though the duo were overwhelmed by Rocks and knocked aside. As Rocks cried in anguish, Roger and Garp decided the only way to put him out of his misery and survive this fight would to channel all of their mass into their next conqueror infused attacks for maximum output. The two proceeded to launch devasting conqueror infused blows that evicierated Rocks body, ending the fight in their victory.
Ultimately, the incident concluded in God Valley disappearing from the world entirely and Rocks' defeat and death. The World Government and propaganda journalist Morgans would go on to attribute his death as the result of Monkey D. Garp's heroics and Gol D. Rogers help.
Legacy[]
With Rocks' death, the Rocks Pirates as a whole disbanded entirely and Rocks' age of piracy came to an end, leading to a new age of piracy under Roger, who would go on to become the Pirate King. Much of Rocks' crimes and past as a whole were covered by the World Government, leaving much of his legacy being greatly deteriorated in history. As a result, most people in the present time are unaware of his existence, with only a few who knew of the truth, such as Garp and senior members of the crew.
Rocks remembered by Kaido as one of the few people capable of challenging him.
Rocks' former crew members would go on to become very powerful captains of their own crews. His former subordinates Newgate, Kaido, and Linlin became part of the Four Emperors while others like Shiki, John, Wang Zhi and Kyo would make names for themselves, though not to the extent as the Emperors.
Rocks' son, Teach, would also go on after surviving the God Valley Incident, becoming a member of the Whitebeard Pirates. He would eventually become an Emperor himself by betraying and killing his captain, as well as turning in Roger's son, gaining his own powerful crew. Teach would name his signature ship, the Saber of Xebec, after his father in honor of his legacy.
Rocks' former crew members, Kaido and Linlin, would later form an alliance to take over the world as Rocks once attempted by seeking out the Ancient Weapons and the One Piece to wage war against the World Government. Their attempts were ultimately foiled by the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance.
Powers and Abilities[]
As one of the first rivals of the Pirate King, Roger, Rocks was a very powerful warrior. Rocks was strong enough to defeat and fatally injure a Marine Admiral, crowned to be one of the most powerful fighters the World Government can possess, which was a capable feat considering their strength. He single-handedly clashed with Harald while simultaneously escaping Mary Geoise. He beat a child Loki, a giant who had ancient giant blood; single-handedly hijacked a ship carrying a load of the heavenly tribute, and destroyed one of the Gates of Justice on his own prior to forming his crew.
His former apprentice Kaido, who earned the title as the World's Strongest Creature in the World even respects his abilities. Kaido considers him as one of the few people in the world along with Roger, Whitebeard, Kozuki Oden, Shanks, and Luffy who were capable of challenging him in a battle. He easily defeated Supreme Knight of God Figarland Garling and his demon army without putting much of a fight.
The Five Elders and Imu were also wary of him, as they ensured his history was redacted from the public records. They also considered anyone with his lineage to be a threat. This is best seen when they found his son Marshall D. Teach to be an ever growing threat with his outrageous actions.
Swordsmanship[]
Rocks was renowned for his swordsmanship, in combination with his Haki.
Rocks was a capable swordsman, his skill was strong to devastate an area. It is noted that he was infamous for his ability and he was capable of clashing with Harald.
Haki[]
Rocks was capable of using the Supreme King Haki, an ability that only few hold. He is also capable of imbuing his sword with this Haki. This is best seen when he clashed with Harald at Mary Geiose. Rocks holds the ability to bypass the Knights of God and Imu's demons' seemingly immortality, making it harder for them to regenerate as shown he took down Garling and his demon army.
Rocks also has the ability to use Observation Haki. He was able to sense Imu's arrival on God Valley.
Demonic Transformation[]
Rocks' transformation.
Rocks later gained the transformation of a giant demon as a result of being converted by Imu's Domi Reversei. In combination with his already powerful might and strength, he gained power and speed that was capable enough of overwhelming Kaido, Linlin and Newgate all on his own. A demonstration of his amplified power is his brief clash with Newgate, where the two managed to cause one of the mountains on God Valley collapse and crash down. He also gained demonic wings, granting him the ability to fly.
