Rodrigue (real name: Rodrigue Varanus Komodoensis) was a highly-intelligent Komodo dragon and the main antagonist of the 2015 animated film April and the Extraordinary World.
He was voiced by Benoît Brière in the French version (who voiced Zazu in Disney's The lion king) and by J.K. Simmons in the English version (who voiced Kai the Collector in DreamWork's Kung Fu Panda 3 and Omni-Man in Invincible).
Plot[]
He was created along with his mate, Chimène by April's great grandfather and managed to escape the lab when Napoléon tried to kill them to make it clear to the scientist that what he wanted was a serum of invincibility, not a serum of hyper-intellect.
In the next 60+ years following their escape, Rodrigue and Chimène with the help of their numerous children, managed to abduct all the greatest minds of the human race to create a bomb covered in invincible life to spread it across the universe and safeguard it from the destructive nature of humans.
They successfully managed to draw April and her successful attempt at the serum of invincibility towards the jungle they built for themselves and their children.
However, when April finished the serum and Julius handed the vial to him, he revealed that his plan was not to waste immortality on some plants but to take it for himself and his family and detonate the bomb close to the surface to destroy mankind and all life on earth but them.
Chimène refused to follow him and tried to take the vial from him, they fought and Rodrigue ended up killing her by shooting through her armor.
Ensued a war between their children because the followers of Chimène were unhappy about the result of their parental conflict.
Rodrigue then tried to kill April but was shot through the armor by Julius, at first, he acted cocky saying he was invincible but he soon realized something was wrong and he died after Julius told him he had performed a switcheroo and handed him a vial of 'H2O'.
Following his death, the children he had with Chimène as well as their bodies were wiped out and burnt to ashes by the missile taking off.
Despite berating humans for their self-destructing behavior, his actions resulted in the death of his whole family and most likely, the extinction of his specie as the world depicted in the movie does not bode well for the survival of the varans.
