I know what my brother was like. He didn't do a terrible thing in his life that he didn't try out on me first.

~ Richard Hagstrom describing his brother.
Roger Hagstrom is the main antagonist from Stephen King's short story Word Processor of the Gods as well as its live-action adaption on Tales of the Darkside. He was the abusive brother of the story's main protagonist, Richard Hagstrom, as well as the father of Jon Hagstrom and husband of Belinda Hagstrom. After driving his van while intoxicated, he crashed, killing himself and the rest of his family.
Roger is described as a cruel, sadistic person who abused and tormented all those around him. From a very young age, Roger was said to have been large and intimidating, getting anything he wanted and hurting anyone that got in his way. Sometimes he would go out of his way to abuse his brother, smashing Richard's in front of him after stealing it from him.
As Roger got older, his character remained the same. He began physically abusing his wife, causing her to have to wear sunglasses on cloudy days in order to hide the bruising. He would also develop a drinking addiction, which would ultimately lead to his and his family's demise, showing how little he cared for their safety.
Biography[]
Roger had been born two years before Richard. Ever since Richard's conception, Roger was said to have subjected him to much torment and ridicule. One moment that was described in detail was when Roger had bullied Richard into giving him his beloved Magic Eight-Ball, which he smashed on the pavement shortly after, taunting his brother all the while. During their teenage years, Roger had stolen Richard's girlfriend Belinda, whom he ended up marrying some years later.
Much is unknown about his adult life, but Roger was said to have neglected his son and beat his wife, causing her to wear sunglasses to cover up the bruises. Two weeks before the events of the story, Roger and his family had been driving back from a day trip in their van. Roger was driving drunk, which caused him to careen off a cliff and down a ninety-foot drop, killing him, his wife, and his son in a fiery explosion.
Trivia[]
Richard made sure to note that Roger bought his son Horn Rims because they were fifteen dollars cheaper.
