Time to open the sarcophagus!
~ Wilson to Rick O’Connell

Professor Roger Wilson is a minor antagonist in the 2008 action adventure film The Mummy: The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, the third installment in The Mummy trilogy.

He was portrayed by David Calder.

Biography[]

Wilson is first seen accompanying Alex O'Connell (the son of Rick annd Evelyn) on an expedition around the Great Wall of China to uncover the long-lost tomb of the First Emperor Of China. As they reach the Emperor’s Terracotta Army, Alex’s companions accidentally set off a series of booby traps which kill them all apart from Alex and Wilson. Alex bereaves their loss, but Wilson tells him there’s nothing he can do for them and encourages him to press on with the expedition. When they eventually find the Emperor’s sarcophagus, Wilson is knocked unconscious by a mysterious cloaked figure who then attacks Alex, but Alex unmasks her, revealing a young Chinese woman who quickly flees the scene. Puzzled, Alex awakens Wilson and they arrange for the sarcophagus to be transported to the Museum of China.

Later on, Wilson greets Alex’s parents, Rick and Evelyn, at the museum and congratulates Alex on successfully locating the Emperor and thus doing a great service to the people of China. However, Wilson then reveals that he’s secretly in league with the ruthless General Yang, who marches into the room along with his second-in-command Colonel Choi. Wilson explains that Yang was the one who financed Alex’s expedition so that he can resurrect the Emperor using the Eye of Shangri-La, which Wilson had manipulated Rick and Evelyn into handing over to him, much to their horror. Meanwhile, Alex finds the woman who had previously attacked him and Wilson and she introduces herself as Lin, the daughter of the sorceress Zi Yuan who was responsible for cursing the Emperor and his army. Lin had been attempting to prevent Alex and Wilson from finding the Emperor out of fear of him being revived and resuming his evil reign, and she and Alex concoct a scheme to save his parents from Yang and Wilson.

As Yang prepares to resurrect the Emperor using Evelyn’s blood combined with the power of the Eye, Wilson forces Rick to open the sarcophagus while holding him at gunpoint. Once the lid is removed, Yang orders Wilson to dispose of Rick but Alex swings down from above and knocks Wilson to the floor before disarming him, and a fight breaks out between Evelyn, Yang and Choi. Alex aims Wilson’s own gun at him but Wilson cowardly begs for his life, and Alex decides to let him go while Lin attempts to destroy the Emperor using a cursed dagger. However, she discovers that the body inside the sarcophagus is only a decoy, and that the real Emperor is actually hidden inside a statue at the front of the coffin. Unfortunately, the contents of the Eye had accidentally been spilled on the statue during the battle, and the Emperor is subsequently revived moments later before bursting out of the statue. Yang declares his loyalty to the Emperor and that he can help him undo the curse that was placed upon him by Zi Yuan, and the Emperor allows him to board his carriage before preparing to escape the museum. At that moment, Wilson desperately demands that the Emperor waits for him to board the carriage too and attempts to climb aboard. However, the enraged Emperor immediately slices Wilson's treacherous head off with one blow from his fiery stone fist.

Personality[]

Roger Wilson was a great deceiver, he was a lifelong friend of Alex's and possibly taught him at university, which is maybe where they got their friendship. However, Roger's true character was a cold-blooded, psychopathic killer. He showed no true affection for anyone and he valued his own life more than anyone's, shown when he left Alex behind and begged the Emperor to save him.

However, despite all his faults, and despite Roger's treachery, Alex was shown to mourn for Roger, wincing as the Emperor struck down his former friend.
