Roger De Carnac

Roger de Carnac is a major antagonist in the Robin of Sherwood episode "The Betrayal".

He was portrayed by Matt Frewer, who also played Trashcan Man in the 1994 version of The Stand and Berlinghoff Rasmussen in Star Trek: The Next Generation and voiced Panic in Disney's Hercules.

Biography[]

Roger de Carnac was an officer in King John's personal guard. As part of his scheme to discredit Robin Hood, John had De Carnac impersonate Robin, with four other members of the royal guards impersonating Little John, Will Scarlet, Friar Tuck and Nasir, and attack a village, killing a number of people and robbing them.

De Carnac accompanied the King as he made a tour of Nottingham, doing his best to appear genial and generous to the peasants, with De Carnac adding to the pretense by scattering gold coins for them. When they arrived at Nottingham Castle, John continued to keep up his pious image until he and De Carnac were alone with the Sheriff and Guy of Gisburne, at which point he berated the pair for letting Robin steal the last two sessions of taxes and contemplated having De Carnac cut their heads off. He then explained his plan to turn the people against Robin in order to save the latest tax collection.

De Carnac and his fake outlaws attacked three monks, shooting one with an arrow and letting the other two escape to spread the word. John addressed the population, vowing to bring Robin Hood to justice and encouraging them to tell the Sheriff anything they knew that could help find him. He then told De Carnac they needed one further outrage to bring the people round.

Disguised again, De Carnac and his men prepared to burn the village of Duxford and kill everyone there. However, they were then confronted by the real Robin, John, Will, Tuck and Nasir. De Carnac noted that the deception was no longer necessary, since Robin had just presented himself to be slaughtered. The two groups clashed and, as his men were defeated around him, De Carnac fought Robin and managed to disarm him. However, the villagers had been drawn to the fight and one of them, Tom, managed to retrieve Robin's sword and threw it to him. When De Carnac charged at Robin again, Robin killed him with a sword slash across his stomach.
