This is no regular lion.
~ Dr. Nate Samuels about the rogue lion.

The Rogue Lion, also known as the Beast is the titular main antagonist of the 2022 survival thriller film of the same name.

He is a lion who lived in a pride until they were taken away from him by poachers and he kills them in vengeance, and since then, he started to kill not only poachers but anyone that stands in his way.

Biography[]

Nothing is known of this lion's early life, though he was just a normal animal that lived with his pride in an animal reserve in South Africa. However, one night, poachers killed the pride to sell for black marketing, but the lion escapes and kills two poachers, Chipo and Abduya, in a fit of vengeful, but violent rage to avenge his pride.

One day, while Dr. Nate Samuels and his two daughters were on a safari trip in the wildlife reserve with his friend Martin Battles, who is a biologist, they discover the corpses of most of the Tsonga population and they suspect a rogue lion was responsible for this. Martin rushes back to report a finding when he and Nate encounter an injured Tsonga man named Mutende, who tells them about the lion, and Nate was unable to save him. Mauling Martin, the lion ambushes Nate and his daughters in the car. Meredith drives the car to escape the animal but ends up crashing into a tree, stranding them.

Martin radios Nate on a walkie-talkie, warning him to stay away, saying the lion is using Martin as bait to lure the others out. As the radio is out of range to contact help, Nate assembles a tranquilizer rifle. He confronts the lion, hoping to subdue the big cat long enough to recover Martin and trek back to civilization. The lion attacks and Meredith takes advantage of the distraction to save Martin. Norah stabs the lion with a tranquilizer dart after he knocks the gun from Nate's hands, causing the beast to retreat. Meredith brings Martin back to the car and Nate treats his wound. However, the lion returns to the car for a moment, roaring, and leaves as the sun sets.

Recovering as night falls, Martin speculates the lion became a rogue and bloodthirsty creature after poachers wiped out his pride, leaving him as the sole survivor. Soon after, when the poachers return to transport the group to the village in exchange for payment, tensions rise after the poachers' spot Martin, being an avid anti-poacher. The lion attacks and scatters the poachers, slaughtering all of them. Nate maneuvers his way past the lion and finds the poachers' truck keys. Back at the car, Martin holds the feline off long enough to allow the sisters to escape, though Meredith sustains a deep laceration to her side. The car falls into a ravine and Martin sacrifices himself by setting off an explosion from the leaking gasoline, severely burning the lion. When Nate and his girls drove a truck to escape and ran out of fuel, they stopped by an abandoned schoolhouse nearby the poachers used as their base.

At the schoolhouse, after Nate treats Meredith's wound and forages for water, the lion, having followed the group, suddenly reappears and stalks the girls, but Nate returns and scares him off. Locking his daughters inside a room and accepting that the lion won't stop no matter what they do, Nate promises to return after subduing the feline. Luring him into an opening, Nate attracts the attention of a local lion pride which Martin helped raise. In the ensuing fight, the lion ferociously mauls and mortally wounds Nate, nearly killing him, until Kuda and Kawe, the pride patriarchs, intervene and kill the big cat for trespassing their territory in order to protect their own pride, ending the animal's violent and bloody rampage, saving Nate's life and avenging Martin's death. Although the park rangers soon showed up and chased off the Lions, taking Nate to a hospital where he makes a full recovery and is reunite with his daughters.

Appearance[]

This lion's appearance in general is very similar to his real-life counterpart, but is larger and more muscular than normal. His mane is dark in color while most males have lighter colored manes. However, due to this rogue behavior, he also displays scars all over his face and body, indicating he has been in fights with humans or other animals. By the ending, he has suffered many cuts, stab wounds and gunshots, even has been burned over much of his body.

Personality[]

Martin: Everybody knows that a wounded lion is dangerous, but I've never seen anything like this. Multiple attacks without eating its prey. Attacking a vehicle. Lions don't do that. It's like he-he... he knows who his real enemy is.
Nate: Meaning what?
Martin: The poachers, you know? They take out the lions, they split up the prides, and then... well... now they're fighting back. This lion's gone rogue because they killed his pride, and now he's coming after all of us.
~ Martin Battles and Dr. Nate Samuels discussing the lion, and realizing why he attacked them.

At first, this individual is portrayed as being animalistic such as behaving and living naturally like an ordinary lion. However, when his pride is killed by the poachers, led by Kees, he is consumed with anger and attacks the poachers in order to avenge his pride. Since then, the animal became a dangerous, ferocious, bloodthirsty and savage rogue, attacking not just any poacher, but any person who entered his territory. Coupled with that, he saw every human as his real enemy, taking out an entire village, attacking a vehicle, etc., unlike real-life lions.

Despite his obviously savage nature, the lion is shown to be rather intelligent as he used Martin as bait to lure Nate and his daughters out of his car. And in the cover of night, he used darkness as camouflage to hide from the poachers. He was also persistent and determined, enough so that he withstood an explosion and despite enduring the burns, followed Nate and his daughters through the mountains. However, his unrelenting behavior turned out to be his downfall as the beast followed Nate to another pride, causing Kuda and Kawe, two male lions, to save Nate's life by taking out and mauling the savage one to death so they can protect their pride.

Trivia[]

  • At times, the Rogue Lion is shown to prusten, a sound that lions do not make in real-life as it is unique to tigers, leopards and jaguars among the big cats. On top of that, it is a non-aggressive sound, specifically showing affection or friendliness, such as between a mother and her cubs.
  • According to Idris Elba, he revealed that the most difficult part of filming was the violent fight scene between Nate and the Rogue Lion. He was required to work alongside both movement and stunt performers wearing motion-capture suits mimicking the actions of the Rogue Lion. Elba also recounted studying Leonardo DiCaprio's performance in the 2015 survival drama The Revenant for inspiration.
