Roland is one of the two main protagonists of the 2nd installment of the Project Moon universe video game, Library of Ruina. A low grade fixer who suddenly finds himself within the vast and infinite library of Angela.
He is voiced by Son Soo-ho.
History[]
Roland at first stumbles upon the Library where he encounters an Angela who is in her alternate form, the AI questions him of how he got inside of the Library to which the latter responds that he doesn't know resulting in him having both his limbs being cut off after the director of the Library was unsatisfied with most of his answers.
Upon being resurrected and given medical treatment, Angela offers Roland a position of being her servant that will help her in completing her goals of attaining a human body.
Past[]
In truth, Roland's purpose of being in the Library from the very beginning was to find the truth and the main culprit behind the events of the White Nights and Dark Days, his mentor, the Purple Tear, Iori, convinces him to get into the Library as part of her ulterior motives in resurrecting her deceased son that died 40 years ago.
His past was revealed to have actually been an orphan adopted by an unknown lady that passed away not long after while also inspiring him into becoming a Fixer and joined the Smoke Wars to secure a better life. After the war, Roland integrates into the City and got a job as a Grade 1 Fixer in the Charles office, and collaborated alongside with his partner soon turned wife, Angelica, the former Black silence. However, his life slowly went downhills when Roland's efforts of trying to work his way to move to a much better and safer area of the City was all for nothing after a smuggling incident of O Corp (which was soon revealed to be Roland blackmailing an operator to force them to commit illegal transference of Enkephalin substances) led to his ticket, and the promise between two Wings for former Smoke War veterans to enter a Nest to be declined, causing him and his wife to remain in the Backstreets (an area outside the protection of wings with the largest rate of criminal activities).
One day, when Roland was sent on his final mission by Charles's Office, the events of White Nights and Dark Days occurs, leading to a Distortion known as The Pianist to manifest in the area that his pregnant wife is living in, and soon caused the death of Angelica and their unborn baby. Roland, devastated by the loss of his wife, was consumed by the hatred for those responsible for the events of White Nights and Dark Days, leading him to go on a massive rampage across The City, killing many peoples who he thinks or blames to be the main cost (though, the majority of these peoples are all serial killers, fanatical cults, and crime syndicates.)
His rampage was put to a temporary halt when Iori shows up and sent him to the Library to find the culprit behind the events of White Nights and Dark Days, which after getting a hold that it was Angela, he decides to feign ignorance, adopted a façade of a calm and passive individual to gain her trust and wait for her to attain her ultimate goal before proceeding to rob it away from her out of the hatred of losing his loved ones.
Good Ending[]
If all Floor Realization and Roland's boss fight is completed, both of the protagonists of the game, Angela and Roland, would be present with two choices, either forgiving each other or continue on their selfish goals. If, the player chooses for Roland and Angela to forgive each other, both would eventually stop what their doing and soon face the right hand men (The Beholder, The Claw, and The Arbiter) dispatched by The Head to get rid of the Library and kill Angela for being an A.I that violates the policies of artificial intelligence. In the aftermath, both Angela, Roland, and the Library are banished to the Outskirts of the City, where Angela eventually realizes that all the sufferings is caused by The Head, and wishes to start a rebellion to overthrow the corrupted system, continuing the former legacy of Carmen.
Bad Ending[]
In contrast to the Good Ending, if Roland chooses to not forgive Angela, he would take the opportunity when Angela was letting down her guard to finish her off. In the aftermath, Roland goes back to his normal life of living in The City after completing his revenge, however, his deeds of turning against The City has gone unnoticed, leading him to die an inglorious death under the hands of unknown individuals (which are actually his close friends and former colleagues), his corpse was found hovering lifelessly underneath a sewage system with multiple weapons impaled everywhere on the back of his body.
In a different Bad Ending, if Angela is chosen to not forgive Roland, she would finish him off and continue on with her selfish goal of attaining a human body.
Personality[]
Roland is a calm and professional individual, tends to be a relaxed and chill person who socializes with many people inside the Library. He appears to be always unfazed at the deaths of many unfortunate Guests who were tricked by the invitations that sent them into Angela's Library, though, he did express a little bit of remorse over some. He also appears to bond with some of the Head Librarians.
However, Roland's chill and relaxing personality including his apathy for the deaths of the Guests was all a façade to gain the trust of Angela. In truth, Roland is a cynical and vengeful person who is ready to sacrifice anything and everything after the death of his pregnant wife just to get back on the culprit who took everything away from him, this vengeful side of his was so dominant that he was willing to keep on killing anyone on behalf of Angela's orders just not to have his plans exposed, this was not limited to even the people that were close to him, most notably is Salvador, a person who fought alongside with him in the Smoke War, and Charles, a close friend and former boss, he even claims that he secretly had to repress the sadness and heartbreaking emotions of killing the people he knew just to get himself to where he wants.
Roland also reveals that he at first tries to understand Angela's actions and see whether there is any hope and salvation for him should she realize the errors of her actions and change, but after seeing how ambitious and determined she was on her goal, he took back everything he thought about her, showing that Roland wouldn't act without any forethought.
Roland's personality and end goal change depending on the player's decisions after his boss fight. If they chose for Roland not to forgive Angela, he would be consumed by his vengeance till the bitter end and outright kill Angela when she lets her guard down, soon after that, Roland returns to his old self after he fulfilled his revenge. In contrast to this, if the player chooses for Roland to forgive Angela, he would let go and come to terms with everything, claiming that his actions and desire for vengeance won't bring back any good.
