Roland Joseph Sable, also known as The Entity, is the main antagonist of the 2019 supernatural slasher Polaroid. Sable's the monstrous ghost of a mass torture-murderer of children at the school of his daughter, Rebecca, later being shot dead by police to save them, having lost it over a horrible secret crime that led to Rebecca's suicide after. Sable resided undead and attached to his camera, summoned to kill through a curse of any and all people who appear in photos taken by his camera.

Biography[]

Background[]

Roland and Lena Sable were possessive and strict over their daughter Rebecca, but from obscene reasons. Roland was repeatedly raping Rebecca in the house, with Lena either letting it happen or believing lies Roland told her while forcing and threatening Rebecca into never saying a word. To terrorize and exploit her more, Rebecca would also be photographed with Roland's decades-old Polaroid camera, to keep the photos as trophies and as failed, sick brainwashing attempts to keep the rapes going for as long as possible. Rebecca did, however, confide in one party: her group of four close friends from school, including a boy named Donald Pembroke, the others being two boys and girl. They cared about her so much as a friend and person, they all planned to report Roland and likely Lena to the police, giving Rebecca hope she'd get away from the house that was never her home.

Tragically, by unknown means, Roland found out and lost it over losing the rapes with a jail sentence or even public shaming. As an affect to Roland's breakdown, all four friends were abducted and held captive in the darkroom of Roland's classroom at the high school he was a photography teacher at. All the kids were tortured both out of maniacal sadism and in a failed attempt to force them to stay silent, taking photos all the while to solidify them as his victims too. The police came to rescue the kids, barging into the darkroom and shooting Roland dead, though the real cause of death was electrocution in a film development table's water. But it was too late, as all the children were killed by the severe torture, except for Pembroke. What was even more devastating was never prevented was that out of distraught shock, after Roland's death as well as that of several of her friends, she killed herself in her front yard by hanging herself from the front walkway tree. The nightmare wasn't over though: with the savagery of Roland, the the brutality of his demise, and Pembroke still being alive while Rebecca was dead, Roland came back from the dead as a deformed ghost summoned by a curse related to his camera, which was inscribed with "RJS", his initials. If any photos are taken with at least one person in it, whoever's in the photo is set to die by an undead, mutated Roland killing them personally. If more than one person, they're murdered in the order of the photos taken of them, and group photos are in orders of Roland's choosing. This all of an undying, begrudged revenge vendetta against Pembroke to kill him as the last teen who got away from Roland's crimes, Pembroke growing up to be the sheriff of the town.

Lena would always tell the story as the camera belonging to Rebecca, and her friends being bullies who stole the one thing that brought her out of her touchy state to take nude photos of her and embarrass her around the school. She worded the massacre as being out of revenge over that lie and Rebecca's suicide being before the other kids were tortured and murdered. This was either a willing, resentful lie after Roland's death or a refusal to believe her home was perverse and vicious, senility likely also playing a role, as she grew old and grey by the time of the film's events.

Polaroid[]

A girl named Sarah's with a friend and goes through her dead mother's heirlooms, finding Sable's camera. When Sarah's crush gives her positive feedback on social media, she has her friend take a tasteful lingerie picture of her with the instant film camera. Roland's shadow's picked up in the flash, as well as the photo, which scares the two girls. When her friend leaves, Sarah, alone in the house, throws an old red ball she finds up into the attic, then tries to clean off the shadow, assuming it a smudge. But the ball bounces back down the attic door's ladder, making her realize she's not alone. she goes up to investigated and almost falls through the door when she sees nothing and is about to go back down. She's caught by an unseen Roland and feels relief for a moment, but that turns into utter terror and panic when she's thrown back up the door again, Roland killing her by dropping her on the second floor below and breaking her neck.

An introvert named Bird Fletcher, who loves photography, is given the camera as a present by Tyler, her co-worker at an antique store who got it at a garage sale and has a crush on her. She adores it because of it being an original early model from when instant film was invented, and she even tests it out by taking a picture of Tyler, once again revealing Roland's shadow. After a really tense pass at Bird from Tyler, who got carried away and tried to kiss her but backed off when she recoiled, she takes the camera and film with her, ready to use it for herself. Her first test shots with the camera are at the costume party of her dear friend Avery, whose parents are out of town. Avery snaps a selfie of the camera when she takes it briefly for her own use. Then, Bird takes a group photo, with a photo bomb, of her crush Connor, her best friend Kasey, her other friend Mina, and Mina's boyfriend Devin. Each time, Bird unsettlingly sees Roland's shadow in the flashes just near her friends in real time.

It only gets worse when Tyler's alone at the store at night, and when a slide projector acts out, Tyler turns and sees a sheet rising, revealed to be Roland, popping out and breaking Tyler's neck, killing him. Bird's later called in by Sheriff Pembroke for interrogation, and she's heartbroken to hear of his death. What shocks and confuses her more is the shadow in Tyler's photo moved to Avery's selfie. This proves to ben an omniscient, self-fulfilling privacy, as Avery's stalked after the party and chased through the house by Roland, before Roland grabs her head with demonic hands and snaps her neck too. With the added tragic loss, the kids are devastated, but Avery tries to destroy the camera. she can't as when she throws it at a wall, it only bounces off unharmed and knocks her down with a shockwave. Realizing her friends are in danger, she meets them in the cafeteria to warn them.

She tells them about how the deaths relate the photos, as well as her spot-on surmise of the curse. Her friends think she's either joking or troubled, and Devin jumps to pulling out a lighter and burning the edge of the photo. When the flame reaches Mina's arm, her real arm actually sets on fire and can't even be extinguished, Kasey's fingers starting to smolder as well. Bird realizes it's the photo and hits the flames to smother them out. Mina's badly burned and gets rushed to the hospital for surgery, but Bird's horrified to see the photo literally rejuvenate itself to its full, original state. Devin and Kasey stay with Mina in the hospital, Devin resenting and blaming Bird at this point, while Connor and Bird go back to the antique store to investigate the camera, Bird's nearly killed by Roland, but he recoils and disappears when singed by heat, like a photo, leading her to question it since she's not in the photos. She realizes she actually is: her reflection in a mirror was caught in the group photo.

Everyone meets back at the hospital, but they're too late and unaware to save Mina from being hanged with the room's bedsheets by Roland, which Devin's horrified and traumatized to discover first. At this point, he full on holds Bird responsible for Mina's burning and hanging, leading her and Connor to work on their own to investigate the curse, starting the camera's monogram. They trace it back to Roland and they find the full story of the massacre and surviving student. Devin's now fully livid and loses it enough to try and take a picture of Bird to endanger her further. But when Connor grabs for the camera, it flashes at Devin instead, the shadow moving to his lone photo to increase his likelihood of death. Now officially trying to kill Bird himself, when he jumps her, Kasey stabs his photo with a pen to hurt him in real life. When Pembroke tries to break up the altercation, Devin strikes him, leading to his arrest and sending the night in custody. Bird visits Devin later, and devastated over his loses and scared for his own death as well as his friends, he accepts he's next and he's likely not going to make it. Accept his life ending at a low point, he apologizes to Bird, takes back all he said, and encourages her to stop Roland, hoping his murder will give the three remaining friends chances and time.

The three free friends track Lena Sable and find her. In a questionable state, she relays the fanciful version of Rebecca and her friends' deaths, and that of Roland's, that she's used to telling. They go and look through the yearbooks to find the surviving student, and they're shocked to find out Pembroke himself is the only survivor of the massacre. Later on, Devin fears come true, as Roland corners him in the locked isolation cell and stabs him with a morphed dagger hand so violently, the weaponized body part pierces Devin all the way through the door before being yanked out.

The three remaining living friends run to their school, where the massacre happened, with a plan to find a way to kill Roland's ghost for good. Pembroke, having followed them their, places Casey in cuffs, resulting Connor and Bird taking a picture of him to make him stop and let her go. When they make the accusations based off Lena's hearsay, he tells the real truth, saying the check the dates because Rebecca killed herself after the massacre, not before. In this moment, the kids and Pembroke are horrified to see Roland appear from the shadows and slowly tearing it in half, literally ripping Pembroke the same brutal, manual way in really, excruciating him with the pain seconds before he falls in two and dies. Now targeting the three remaining kids, as the curse still hasn't ended, they try to run. Kasey, still in cuffs and also stabbed in her leg by Roland before narrowly escaping murder, is hidden in the showers, with hot water running to deter Roland. She meets up with Connor later, but he's pulled away by Roland, leading Bird to snap a selfie to provoke Roland into coming after her instead. It works, as he ditches Connor and corners Bird in the same darkroom the massacre happened in and readies to kill her, showing a closeup of his grotesque disfigurement as he comes into clearer view in the tinted lights. Bird quickly grabs the camera and swiftly takes a photo of Roland, subjecting him to his own curse, as well as catching two of her fingers. She tries to crush the photo, gruesomely dislocating Roland's ghastly form, as well her own hand. But Roland gets back up and her fingers relocate when she opens her hand holding the photo. In a last resort, she sparks a fire and puts the photo in the flames. Roland incinerates into dust, while her fingers also burn black, before recovering enough she's not severely harmed. She meets up with her friends Connor okay and Kasey out of the cuffs. She's ready to join them, but she says she has one more thing to take care of. She reaches the shore of the city river, where she stares out and tosses the camera into the water, leaving it behind and destroying its powers permanently.
