The Centurion is the secondary antagonist of the Star Trek episode "Balance of Terror".
He was portrayed by the late John Warburton .
Biography [ ]
The Centurion was second-in-command of the Romulan bird of prey which attacked and destroyed a number of Federation outposts along the Neutral Zone border as a test of the humans' strength. He was old friends with the ship's Commander , noting they had fought in a hundred campaigns together. Unlike the Commander, he believed that proof of their strength should be a signal for war. He warned the Commander when he had one of the crew, Decius , demoted for breaking communicator silence, saying that Decius had powerful friends.
With the Enterprise tracking them bent on avenging the destroyed outposts, the Commander lamented to the Centurion that destroying it would mean another war and thus more death and admitted he almost wished they would be destroyed to prevent it. The Centurion warned him that their duty was to obey and the Commander assured him he would carry out his duty. The Commander had the bird of prey travel into the tail of a comet, intending to double back while out of the Enterprise's sensors and destroy the ship. However, he realised at the last minute that the Enterprise intended to destroy his ship when the comet tail made it visible despite its cloaking device and ordered a course change.
Despite both ships' plans having failed, the Enterprise opened fire blindly and struck the Romulan ship. The bridge sustained damage and the Centurion was badly injured after pushing the Commander out of the way of falling debris. He died on the bridge while the rest of the crew were driving the Enterprise back. The Commander had his body ejected into space along with debris in order to distract the Enterprise.
