~ Young Ronno
Ronno is the secondary antagonist of Disney's 5th full-length animated feature film Bambi (which is based on the 1923 Austrian novel Bambi, a Life in the Woods by the late Felix Salten), and the main antagonist of its 2006 midquel Bambi II.
His older self was "voiced" by the late Frank Churchill and the late Edward H. Plumb (the film's composers, who "voice" both him and Man with music) in the first film, and his younger self was voiced by Anthony Ghannam in the midquel.
In the midquel, Ronno is given much more personality, and unlike in the previous film, he has dialogue. When Bambi and his friends were watching the Groundhog, Ronno scared him back into his hole with a "BOO!" and laughs while the other animals leave in disappointment. However, he stops them and tells them that he saw a man and butted him with his antlers. This is clearly a tall tale he pulls just to get attention. Faline, who knows that it is impossible for a fawn to defeat a man, politely, and without offending, says it was unbelievable, though with noticeable sarcasm in her voice. Bambi, who really believes that Ronno had done such a feat (as a testament to his innocent naivete), thinks it is unbelievable, too, though he says it in awe. Ronno, who thinks that Bambi doesn't believe him and is hinting at him being a liar, challenges Bambi to a fight. Thumper tells Bambi to clobber him. Ronno continues to goad Bambi by insulting his name, asking, "Bambi? Isn't that a girl's name?" and laughing, insisting that Bambi spar with him while backing him up against a tree. Before Ronno can fight Bambi, his mother calls him, and he yells at her for constantly interrupting him while he's trying to make new friends, and his mother answers, "Sorry, dear," and they leave together.
Ronno also develops a crush on Faline, and he tells her about himself, but Faline still believes Ronno isn't what he claims to be and shows clear displeasure in his company. She hears Bambi screaming and rushes to check on him. Ronno, upset about Bambi garnering Faline's attention away from him, shows up to insult him and says that he witnessed Bambi freeze with fear out on a meadow when Man's dogs arrived, right in front of his father, the Great Prince, shaming him in the process. Ronno tells Bambi not to feel bad, though, as if there weren't cowards, one would not tell who the brave ones were. Bambi replies that he's not a coward and "roars" at Ronno, but he's unimpressed. Afterward, Ronno tries to force Faline to leave with him against her will (in a manner disturbingly similar to the first film), but Bambi yells at him to leave her alone. Ronno turns to Bambi and starts to tease him again, this time about being friends with Thumper and Flower. Thumper pushes Bambi towards Ronno, trying to urge him to stand up to the bullying fawn, and knocks him down into the mud. Outraged, Ronno starts to chase Bambi and Thumper, fully intending to beat them up, and while chasing them, Bambi jumps over a large chasm and then runs into his father, while Ronno, intimidated by the sight of the Great Prince, hides away into the bushes. Bambi's father is impressed by the jump, commenting that he didn't make a jump like that until he had antlers. While they're returning home, Ronno tries to jump and nearly makes it, but he slips and falls into a mud pit instead.
He shows up again during the "First Sign of Spring" musical number, running with the other deer, and he taunts Bambi with a raised tail and a haughty facial expression before taking off. When the Great Prince runs past him, he gives an awed: "WHOA!" His expression then changes to both anger and jealousy as Bambi runs past him. He speeds up, trying to beat Bambi, but with his father's encouragement, Bambi beats Ronno, and runs alongside his father, leaving Ronno well behind with the rest of the deer.
Later on, he shows up and taunts Bambi while Mena is taking Bambi to her home, saying that he wanted to say goodbye, thought they were pals, and really felt sorry for Bambi having a father that was so ashamed of him, he'd give him away. Bambi gets angry and fights back, and knocks Ronno down. Outraged, Ronno knocks Bambi into Mena, and she gets caught in one of Man's snare traps. She tells them to get out of there immediately in a panic, the bell on the trap immediately alerting hunters to their location and the barking of dogs clear in the distance. Ronno runs away, screaming, "Mommy!"
Later, after Bambi and Faline have their first kiss, Ronno shows up and swears revenge by telling Bambi that they'll meet again, but he trips on a turtle, and it bites his nose. He runs away screaming, "GET IT OFF!" repeatedly and jumping around in a panic, again screaming, "Mommy!" which incites Flower to say, "See? I told you turtles were scary." Everyone then laughs over Ronno's defeat.
Bambi[]
During Springtime, while Bambi and Faline were frolicking on Cloud 9, Ronno appears from the bushes as a dark monster, and he meets Bambi again, and this time, he takes Faline hostage and tries to kill her as revenge. Angry and fed up with Ronno's bullying, Bambi fights back. Ronno knocks Bambi down several times, but Bambi eventually knocks Ronno off a cliff into the water and rescues Faline from Ronno.
Ronno is not seen again, and it's unknown whether or not he died in the forest fire.
1951 Manga adaptation[]
In the 1951 manga of Bambi by Osamu Tezuka, Ronno is mostly the same as his movie counterpart, but also appears during the beginning portion as a fawn alongside Bambi and has dialogue throughout the story.
After meeting Faline, the two meet Ronno with an unnamed companion, with Ronno whispering to his friend that Bambi was fatherless. Ronno proceeds to feign friendship to Bambi, offering to take him somewhere fun. Ronno and his friend trick Bambi into approaching a human. Fortunately for Bambi, the human was a child, and Bambi ended up leaving with his life.
When Bambi becomes an adult, Ronno is revealed to have continued to bully the other forest animals, and is called "Ronno the Rampager" by Thumper. Ronno is enraged upon finding out about Faline and Bambi's relationship, saying both Faline and the forest belong to him. Like in the movie, he tries to force Faline against her will to be his mate and attacks Bambi when he tries to rescue her.
As Ronno and Bambi battle near a clifftop, Man arrives and tries to shoot the dueling deer. Bambi prevails, knocking Ronno off the cliff into the hunters' sight. It's possible that Ronno died either from his injuries, was shot dead by Man, or he died in the forest fire.
House of Mouse[]
Ronno made two appearances in the series. In the episode "Goofy's Menu Magic", he can be seen waiting in the line for some of Goofy's soup. In "House of Genius", he was seen waiting to be seated when Donald and Daisy were sleeping on the job.
Personality[]
Ronno is a braggart, a liar, a coward, and a vicious bully, along with being an overconfident, arrogant jerk. He is disrespectful to nearly everyone around him, including his own mother by yelling at her for constantly interrupting him when he is trying to make new friends, but he screams for her whenever he's in danger. He is completely oblivious to the fact that almost nobody likes him due to his attitude. His only possible redeeming quality is that, like other deer, he at least has the good sense to show respect to the Great Prince of the Forest.
Ronno had a crush on Faline since fawnhood, but Faline always hated him, because he was a bully. She chose Bambi, because he was friendly and he truly loved her, while Ronno only wanted her for his own shallow, selfish reasons. Even as a fawn, Ronno was also shown to have consent issues when he tried to force Faline to be his mate against her will -- whether she liked him or not. Bambi fought back, and he defeated Ronno.
Ronno always hated Bambi out of extreme jealousy, especially since he was the son of the Great Prince of the Forest. He picked more fights with Bambi than anyone else because of this, but Bambi always managed to defeat him, including the time when he outran Ronno while running with the other deer, and catching up to his father.
As an adult, Ronno again tried to force Faline to be his mate against her will -- whether she liked him or not. Again, Bambi fought back, and he eventually knocked Ronno off a cliff and into the water.
Appearance[]
Ronno is a large deer with dark brown fur and black-tipped ears, with his right ear being torn.
As a fawn, he has budding antlers and green eyes. As an adult, he has dark brown eyes, and three points on his antlers.
Ronno is at least a few months older than Bambi. As a fawn, his antlers had already started sprouting and he had no spots on his fur, while Bambi had no antlers and still had spots on his fur until the end of Bambi II, when Bambi's spots disappeared and his antlers started sprouting. As adults, Ronno had three points on his antlers, while Bambi had two.
Trivia[]
In the films, Ronno and Bambi have been enemies since childhood. However, in the book Bambi, a Life in the Woods, Ronno and another young buck named Karus (who is absent from the film) were on good terms with Bambi in childhood and had known him even before his mother's death. Upon reaching maturity, Ronno along with Karus, battled Bambi for Faline's love. Also in the book, Ronno has a lame leg after being shot, but lacks this in the film or the manga adaptation.
When he told his story about meeting Man, both Faline and Bambi told him that his story is "unbelievable", though he reacted differently to each comment - he did not mind the former telling him this as he is in love with her, but when the latter told him this he thought the latter was calling him a liar (even though Bambi actually believed him).
Neither Ronno nor Man appear in the comic book Bambi's Children or in the live-action sequel Perri because probably both died in the wildfire.
In Bambi, Ronno has three points on his antlers and light brown eyes as well a hole in his right ear. However, in House of Mouse, he has two points on his antlers and dark brown eyes, but strangely doesn't have a hole in his ear like in the movie. In Bambi II, he has green eyes.
