~ Reginald in the game's finale. |
Rootbeer Reggie (more formally known as just "Reginald") is the overarching protagonist of The Hex (2018) and the mastermind behind the game's events.
Personality[]
Reginald is a calm, collected, yet forgetful old man. In his youth he was stubborn, and he still appears stubborn in the game's main plot. He is intelligent, being the one behind a majority of the game's plot, he uses clues and puns to help Lazarus find the gun that was used to shoot Irving dead. He is rather eccentric especially as viewed by the game's characters as he explains little about his plan to the other protagonists and the player. Having been the one that tricks the player into performing the ritual that opens The Hex, further solidifies the point that he is much smarter than he lets himself on to be.
Biography[]
Root Beer Tender[]
Before the game's events, Reggie was the main protagonist of Lionel Snill's first game; Root Beer Tender. Where he served customers of his bar alongside his janitor, Jeremiah. The game is a simplistic parody of Root Beer Tapper, and is held in low regards by the sole developer, Lionel Snill. However, Lionel truly liked Reginald as a character especially for how Reggie reminded him of his grandfather, Barry 'Reginald' Wilkson, who he was based off of. When Lionel ultimately decides to shutdown the game, he asks Irving to do the job but preserve Reggie's files, finding it too difficult to delete the game himself. Irving complies, visiting Reginald during a session of the game. The game began to glitch, as Irving confronted Reginald to abandon the game. Reggie, in denial that Lionel would dispose of him, refuses to comply. Irving, unable to empathize, breaks Reggie's legs as a result of this. It is this series of events that starts off the game's plot and brings upon Reginald's motivation to get revenge on Lionel and Irving. The former, unknowingly provoking him by ordering the shutdown of his game.
Six Pint Inn[]
After Reginald was crippled and kicked out of his game, he ran an Inn presumably in the void where most dysfunctional player characters went. Plotting his revenge, Reggie sent Jeremiah out to gather up six game characters for a ritual that'd open a portal to the real world. Jeremiah complies, visiting characters from several different games and by extension, convincing the player to help their ritual as well. As Jeremiah gathers Lazarus, Weasel Kid, and several others to invade the Gameworks, Reggie hires Bryce as a chef for his Inn sometime after Irving puts Bryce out of business. Once all the characters are gathered at the Inn, Reggie receives a call that one of the characters are planning a murder, and begins having them do seemingly trivial tasks, like getting Weasel Kid to bring him the kitchen key, or having Bryce bring a pie to Chandrelle's room. As Rust, who Reginald consistently confuses for being named "Dust", makes it to the top floor to meet with Jeremiah, it is soon revealed that the trivial tasks Reginald had the cast perform, was in preparation for a seventh guest; Irving. Irving pays Reginald a visit in search of Lazarus, who soon after flees into the kitchen to hide. While Irving berates the Inn's patrons, Reginald slides puns into their argument to give Lazarus hints on where a secret room in the kitchen is, the room containing guns. Lazarus takes a gun, confronting Irving. Once Irving is shot, Reginald's revenge is finally had but it is not over as Reggie directly asks the player if they are satisfied with the game ending at Lazarus being the murderer. In the event the player answers no, Reginald takes gleefully to the response reinstating that it's important the player is still interested in the plot. Calling ??? to go out to the Inn's shack, and finalize the ritual as the player plays through Lionel's latest game, "Walk". The game blatantly displays Lionel's status as a sellout as he uses it to voice his bias on how he mishandled his former employees and games along with their fanbases. The player soon gets to play Root Beer Tender, Lionel's true first game as it is finally seen what Irving did to send Reggie down his path to vengeance. When the player finishes, Reggie has the player finalize his ritual to open The Hex, Reggie thanks the player for their patronage before heading out into the real world. He then strangles Lionel to death, what happens after the fact is unknown.
