Rose Granville is the main antagonist of the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode "Tragedy". She is a wealthy woman who has her daughter's fiancée's pregnant lover kidnapped.
She was portrayed by the late Shirley Knight, who also portrayed Melanie Cullen in Law & Order and Jane Redding in Elevator.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Rose is the CEO of Granville Developers, a multinational real estate conglomerate. She was married with a daughter, Melinda, but her husband eventually left her for a younger woman and took half of her money.
When Melinda got engaged to Daniel Lester, a carpenter who worked for Granville Developers, Rose feared that he would cheat on her daughter just as her husband had betrayed her. She hired private investigators to follow Lester, and they reported back to her that he was having an affair with his ex-girlfriend, Annika Bergeron, and that she was pregnant with his child. To prevent Lester from leaving Rose and taking the Granville fortune with him, Rose came up with a plan to have Annika kidnapped and to frame Lester for it.

Rose hires ex-con Greg Jezik to kidnap Annika, who calls 911 before Jezik destroys the phone. Detectives Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler of the NYPD's Special Victims Unit investigate the kidnapping, and interrogate Lester after learning that Jezik served time in prison with his old friend Sam Marlett, suspecting that he had Annika kidnapped to keep her from telling Rose and Melinda about his infidelity and ruining his chances of marrying into a rich family. Lester confesses to having Annika kidnapped.
Benson and Stabler look into Melinda and Rose's financial records and find that Rose had recently withdrawn a large sum of money from her bank account in the Cayman Islands - the exact amount now in Jezik's bank account. They deduce that Rose had ordered the kidnapping, that Melinda had tried to cover it up, and that Lester made a false confession to protect his fiancée.
After Annika dies in childbirth, Benson and Stabler arrest Melinda for kidnapping, and she confesses that she covered up what Rose had done. Outraged, Lester breaks off the engagement and takes his and Annika's daughter, Celia, to raise. Melinda accuses Rose of ruining her life, but Rose justifies her actions by saying she was merely trying to protect her. Benson and Stabler then arrest her for kidnapping and murder, and she is imprisoned for life.
