Rotten the Snowman is the main antagonist of the Smiling Friends episode Pim Finally Turns Green.
He was voiced by Dana Snyder.
Appearance[]
Snowman[]
He is a CGI, Claymation-like snowman, pieced together from random garbage found outside the Smiling Friends office. Large, bright yellow stains on his snowy body imply that someone recently urinated on him. His eyes are mismatched, with an 8-ball for the right and a pebble for the left. His nose is made from a paper towel roll, his right arm is a stick, and his left arm is a shattered beer bottle. He sports a blue denim bowtie. His lower half is soiled with dirt, grass, and various debris. Atop his head is a yellow daffodil that sprouted from radioactive waste, which granted him sentience.
Ocean[]
As the ocean, he presumably embodies the entire body of water, colored with a deep blue and adorned with a simplistic, janky face with with two circular outlines for eyes and a curved, smiling mouth.
Personality[]
He was initially bewildered and fearful upon gaining consciousness, questioning his existence and what he was experiencing. Once he learns what it means to be alive, he feels deep gratitude and cherishes his life, eager to explore the essence of living. He revels in the time spent with Pim, who teaches him about life's joy through activities like snowball fights, ice skating, and sledding.
However, upon realizing that all life is finite, Rotten becomes trapped in perpetual grief and dread over his temporary existence. Initially desperate to find a way to extend his life indefinitely, he eventually understands that what he truly values are the experiences within his lifespan. Accepting his fate, he decides to live life to the fullest, even if it means melting in the sun.
After melting, Rotten is reincarnated as the ocean. However, in this new form, he develops a malevolent streak, deriving pleasure from the suffering of humans and critters. This darker side is evident when he destroys a yacht, though it is unclear if he fully comprehends the ramifications of his actions.
Biography[]
During Christmas, Charlie and Glep build what they proudly name "the worst snowman ever," using various discarded items from outside the office. Allan remarks that the snowman looks rotten, which Charlie agrees with, emphasizing that it’s part of the plan and names the snowman Rotten. Pim, who loves making snowmen, joins in and decides to place a daffodil on it, even though it clashes with the theme. When the daffodil is added, the snowman suddenly comes to life and screams, startling everyone. The group realizes Rotten is now alive, and Rotten begins to question the meaning of existence. Mr. Boss arrives and reveals that the daffodil Pim used came from nuclear waste. He threatens to destroy Rotten because of his newfound consciousness, but Pim proposes they teach Rotten about life instead, leaving him alone to do so.
Pim and Rotten enjoy the snow, engaging in activities like sledding and snowball fights before resting on a bench. Rotten spots a billboard for Meep Lite at the beach and expresses a wish to visit. Pim explains that he can’t take Rotten there because it would be fatal, which leaves Rotten overwhelmed with existential dread. Pim tries to comfort Rotten by explaining that death is a natural part of life, but Rotten remains fearful. The next day, Rotten is still crying outside the Smiling Friends HQ, causing frustration among the team. Pim feels responsible for Rotten’s despair. Charlie offers assistance and suggests that his uncle might be able to help. They introduce Rotten to Bill Nye, presumably contacted by Charlie's uncle, who starts singing about the inevitability of death from a hot air balloon, assuring Rotten that it is nothing to be afraid of. Although the song initially lifts Rotten’s spirits, the balloon crashes into a power line, killing Bill Nye and reinforcing Rotten’s fear of death through the horrific display.
Back at HQ, Mr. Boss complains that Rotten's erratic behavior is driving away customers and threatens drastic measures if the situation isn't resolved. Allan suggests taking Rotten to a mountaintop, where he might theoretically live forever. They take Rotten to the mountaintop and explain that it would prevent him from melting, which seems to comfort him. However, Charlie mentions that it might get warmer in a million years, so it’s only "basically" forever. This inadvertently upsets Rotten again, but Pim and Charlie leave him there.
The next day, a Yeti arrives at the Smiling Friends HQ with Rotten, explaining that the mountaintop was his private property and that Rotten had disturbed his family before kicking him back to the office. Glep proposes putting Rotten in a freezer, which excites Rotten as he believes it means he’ll never die. However, after six months in the freezer, Rotten realizes that, while he is technically alive, he’s missing the vibrant life he once had with Pim. When he learns the team is going to the beach, he decides to join them, and Pim devises a plan to keep him alive.
At the beach, while the Smiling Friends and their partners play volleyball, Rotten cools off in an ice box and hands Charlie a beer. He notes that his anxieties are fading, but his cooler is accidentally knocked over by a clumsy beachgoer. As Rotten melts into the sand, he reassures a distressed Pim that it’s time to move on and expresses contentment with his fate. Pim and Charlie mourn Rotten’s passing but are amazed to see Rotten reincarnate in the ocean after melting into it.
After Charlie's speech, he and Pim debate whether Rotten was reincarnated as just a wave or the entire ocean. Rotten then swallows a cruise liner while smiling and creates a massive wave, seemingly aiming to flood the entire beach.
Trivia[]
- He is a parody of the popular Christmas tale of Frosty the Snowman, a snowman who gained sentience after being given a magic silk hat.
- It is debated as to why exactly Rotten started killing people. Some think he went mad with power, whereas others believe that he thinks people can become immortal like him if they die too.
