Rudy is the main antagonist of Blue Sky Studios' 5th full-length feature film Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and a minor character in its 2012 sequel Ice Age: Continental Drift.
He is a giant albino Baryonyx and Buck's arch-nemesis, who wants to kill him in revenge for knocking out his tooth.
His vocal effects were provided by Frank Welker.
Personality[]
Rudy is an aggressive dinosaur who is viewed by every known character as a devastating and bloodthirsty enemy. Rudy also can shown to be a sadist that constantly on the hunt and quick to attack others. Few creatures were brave enough to attack Rudy, though some, such as Buck and Momma, would step up to face him if forced to.
Appearance[]
Rudy is a impossibly massive Albino Baryonyx, his head being similar to the depiction of Spinosaurus seen in Jurassic Park, but with a thinner snout around the middle area, before the end of the about grows more bulbous and larger, similar to crocodilians. Rudy's neck is long, thick, and strong, capable of supporting his larger head. Rudy's torso is much larger, and more thicker, with two rows of Osteoderms (Spikes) on his back, running down to his very long tail. Rudy's arms are long and lanky, ending in a hand that only has three massive claws. Rudy's legs, the thighs begin large, muscular, and robust, before thinning down and becoming more like birds legs, which are still strong enough to support his body weight, his feet ending in three massive taloned toes. From Estimates, Rudy is 82 feet at the hips when in the normal Theropod posture, and 142 at the hips when he stands at a more bipedal posture, and over 200 feet in height when standing upright at the snout.
History[]
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs[]
Prior to the events of the film, Rudy attacks a weasel named Buck, scratching out his right eye. He then tries to eat Buck, but before he can swallow him, Buck manages to escape the dinosaur's throat, and rockets out of the dinosaur's mouth, knocking out one of his teeth, which the weasel later makes into a dagger. Ever since, Rudy has had a grudge against Buck.
Throughout the movie until the climax, Rudy was only seen in the shadows to highlight his malevolence and massive appearance. Rudy follows the tracks of Buck and the herd, planning to ambush them at the right moment. Buck (as well as Momma) occasionally hear his loud roars coming from the forest.
After plowing through the Plates of Woe to Lava Falls (also scaring the Guanlong there into hiding), Rudy manages to catch up with Sid after being accidentally left behind by Momma. Chased, The terrified sloth is able to make his escape from Rudy's wrath by running onto an obsidian river. Before walking away, Rudy stomps on the ground, causing the lava underneath to reemerge and trap Sid. Unknown to Rudy, his nemesis Buck and the possums are on their way to rescue the sloth by riding a Pterodactyl but a pack of Quetzalcoatlus causes a stall. After defeating most of the pack and leaving one predator blown up as a balloon, Sid is then caught just as he falls over the edge.
Once Sid is saved, the herd travels back but as soon as they get to where they started, Rudy ambushes Buck and the herd; hidden inside the cave entrance they used to travel to the dinosaur world and attempts to kill them all. Buck distracts Rudy, while Manny, Diego, and Sid proceed to tie Rudy up with vines. However, Sid accidentally trips over a vine, allowing Rudy enough time to recover and break free from the vines. Before Rudy is able to finish off Sid, Momma, in a timely arrival, charges into Rudy and pushes him against a stone off a nearby cliff, sending the Baryonyx to fall to his apparent death. Buck is shown to feel sorry for Rudy, because the only challenge in his life was gone. However, it is later shown that Rudy somehow survived the fall, and continues his feud with Buck.
Ice Age: Continental Drift[]
Rudy and Buck make a cameo appearance in Ice Age: Continental Drift and Scrat's Continental Crack-Up Part 1, where Scrat witnesses Buck riding Rudy as he descends to the Earth's core.
Legacy[]
After the previous sequel, Rudy does not appear and is not mentioned in the following films for no apparent reason, his current status being unknown. In Ice Age: Collision Course he is replaced by Gavin and the Dino Birds family as Buck's enemies, although his tooth is still used as a weapon for Buck, later in The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild, Rudy is not referenced again in any way (not even in the recap at the beginning), although Buck still has Rudy's tooth as a weapon, so Orson takes the role of Buck's dinosaur enemy.
Other Media[]
Dawn of the Dinosaurs - Videogame[]
Rudy acts as the main antagonist just like in the original movie. He appears as an enemy in a level where Sid must flee from him through lava falls and as a final boss in which Buck must weaken him for Momma Dino to defeat him.
Ice Age Adventures[]
Rudy appears as one of the bosses that must be defeated.
Ice Age: Scrat's Nutty Adventure[]
Rudy will only appear sleeping in the Dinosaur World, so Scrat will have to get into his nose and sneeze out towards the Scrattazons' base.
Trivia[]
- Rudy is possibly a reference towards Moby Dick. Both are albino predators who mutilated their respective enemies; Buck (who lost an eye) and Captain Ahab (who lost a leg). However, he is the rival of a hero, rather than the rival of another villain.
- Rudy is the second main antagonist of a Blue Sky Studios movie who does not die in his respective movie, the first being Sour Kangaroo.
- He is sometimes thought to be a Suchomimus or even a Spinosaurus, due to being far larger than the Tyrannosaurus in the film and because of the fact that the Baryonyx was a smaller dinosaur itself, while the Spinosaurus was a much larger predator.
- Despite being a predator, Rudy apparently had quick strategies and thoughts, as when he recognized Buck, he hesitated to attack the herd and preferred to attack Buck, and also hoped that the bonds would be loosened to attack.
- Rudy tends not to go to Lava Falls, as the obsidian floor breaks easily with his step.
- In an earlier concept, Rudy would have a more lasting and fair battle against Momma Dino, but the scene was dropped for the sake of the film's runtime, although they did battle in the video game adaptation of the film.
- Rudy is currently (so far) only Ice Age villain to not have any partner/organization henchmen. Soto and Gutt have evil organizations, Cretaceous and Maelstrom are partners, Gavin has his children as henchmen and Orson is the emperor of his raptors.
